I applied one teaspoon of npk on each bag and water very well every other day. This was after i had applied organic manure a month before. And they're doing wonderfully after 4weeks
@@ChidavAgriculturalHub thanks Dave. I think what people who are interested in farming yams in sacks must put in mind is regular watering! I never took that seriously when I started 3yrs ago as I didn't usually water the yam in sacks anytime it rained. But now, I know better since last year and tubers were bigger. This year I have decided to plant 2 yam seeds in a bag since I mostly used rice and flower bags.
What do you do to drain out exceess water from the sacks? I'm from Benue State of Nigeria and this novel was of planting yams, our main food crop, certainly interests me
Urea not as necessary as your phosphate fertilizer and potassium giving fertilizers. They are tuber crops. I would advise you use an NPK 15 15 15. Once vines are well developed, you can apply
Awesome work. But is it true that yams grown with inorganic fertilizer do not make good seeds for planting? That they get rotten within a short time. How true is that sir?
I think you can still apply inorganic fertilizer since the organic fertilizer digest gradually into the soil for longer periods. The case is different on the other one which is more faster but very technical! Hope this helps you.
Yes, you can. The inorganic fertilizers are readily available to the plant over a short period. So, you can apply inorganic fertilizers for quick action on your field.
Thanks again for the update my brother. But is it true NPK fertilizer is good for yam other than super gro fertilizer that can be sprayed on the leaves and veins? Someone said the NPK 20,10,10 or 15,15,15 can make yams to turn coloured and lose its taste instead of white. How true is this? I'm presently using super gro fertilizer. So I'm confused if I should start applying the one you just emphasized on. Thank you.
Can I apply 20 10 10 during the early stages of growth (1-2 months after sprouting)? I think this will assist with built up of vegetative tissue, intense root ramification and profuse leaf formation. Then switch to 15 15 15 from the third month post-sprouting. Thank you.
Using the Yam miniset technique, do I have to allow the yam sprout first before transplanting to the bag or just have it planted directly to the bag without it been sprouted? And how many yam seed can I actually plant per bag?
It's an NPK fertilizers of ratio 15:15:15. It's a compound fertilizer having all the primary nutrients of equal ratio. You'll be able to get this from any agrochemical company
There're lots of advantages sir. Let me state just a few 1. Efficient use of available space. 2. Not restricted by concrete floors 3. Easy to manage 4. Lesser weed issues 5. Easy to harvest 6. Efficient use of nutrients 7. Non issue of soil erosion Etc.
If, doing that would be profitable at the end of the day, of course you can. But, you can still grow your with other soils, you just have to make sure the soils are well managed
@@ChidavAgriculturalHub Thanking you for this, am a poultry farmer, good more than enough manure, i shall explore this asap. Regards, and keep your highly informative videos going.

Very interesting...thank you for the info, you definitely must be more careful with the bag grow method.
Thanks so much for this. I want to give it a try . At what point do I start the application of the NPK? Can any type of soil b used ?

Those would work perfectly well.

If in excessive dosage, then that might be true
This is massive. Please when is the best time to plant Yams ?
Anytime, as long as irrigation is available
Is it advisable to still apply fertilizer after you've already used organic manure like pig dung?
I think you can still apply inorganic fertilizer since the organic fertilizer digest gradually into the soil for longer periods. The case is different on the other one which is more faster but very technical!

Yes, you can.
The inorganic fertilizers are readily available to the plant over a short period.
So, you can apply inorganic fertilizers for quick action on your field.
Also when is the best time to start planting yam and is it late to start in August?
March april, with rains. And anytime with irrigation
At what stage of growth is the fertilizer applied please?
Fertilizers should come in ok once the leaves are developed

6 to 9 months

What are the steps to apply organic fertilizer (poultry Dũng) on yam planted in a sac? You didn’t highlight that’s. Please
For your organic, just spread round the sack in a larger quantity now, because no known adverse effect of your organic manure
@@ChidavAgriculturalHub If it’s still fresh , do I have to dry or decompose first?
Yes please, allow the fresh manure to get dry first or get decomposed
Using the Yam miniset technique, do I have to allow the yam sprout first before transplanting to the bag or just have it planted directly to the bag without it been sprouted? And how many yam seed can I actually plant per bag?
Minisetts won't give you ware tubers, but seed yams for planting next season
For MINISETTS, I'll advice you plant them in ridges and not sacks.

Hello Dave...
Very quickly, can I apply chicken manure and npk fertilizer on my yams at same time?
Yes, you can
Thanks a lot but what is the name of the ferterlizer, where do I get it to buy and when do I apply it
It's an NPK fertilizers of ratio 15:15:15.

You'll be able to get this from any agrochemical company
Just ask for any brand on an npk 15:15:15 fertilizer, when you want to purchase
Does it yielsd more in sacks the yams
Can i place my sacks spaced out rather than stacked together. Whats the advantages of stacking the sacks together
Yes. You can. Advantage is get more sacks in a given area, and less weed growth in that area.
Weldon my brother please l want to ask if it can be applied to newly planted yam
Apply when the yam fully develops leaves
@@ChidavAgriculturalHub ok thank you
Is it a good agronomic practice to mix NPK and Urea fertilisers and apply? Not just yam in this case but also to plants like pineapple and vegetables.
Npk already has urea in it.
The N in the NPK, is nitrogen which is same as urea
@@ChidavAgriculturalHub thank you sir
Sir, can I Apply fertilizer before it sprouts...yam in bags
No please, if it's an inorganic fertilizer. But if it's your animal manure, you may mix with soil prior planting.
Is Urea okay for yam in sac?
No please.
Urea works best for crops that their foliar parts or leaves are their economic part.
What is the advantage of growing in sack?

1. Efficient use of available space.
2. Not restricted by concrete floors

What can I do so that my spilited yams will jarminate quick
Plant the yam that has broken dormancy
Can I plant yam during dry season using irrigation?
100%
After a month of applying NPK fertilizer can we still apply it again other months
Yes sir.
If you can get animal dung, decomposed., that would be really ok.
Bsf frass or poultry dung
Or is it preferable to buy black soil in case there are no good soil around
If, doing that would be profitable at the end of the day, of course you can.
But, you can still grow your with other soils, you just have to make sure the soils are well managed
Thanks boss
What happens when the sand in sacks clogs
That's why you have to get the soil moist
@@ChidavAgriculturalHub what is a soil moist please?
It simply means keeping the soil wet and not dry.
You must make sure the sand you use does not clog! Water application must not be 2 much as well.
What type of chemical you use before u plant your yam
Fungicide and insecticide
When do u start and end fertiliser applications?
You apply when leaves are fully developed
When you stop is dependent on your yield goal
Ok thanks I appreciate
Which month are applying your fertilizer
Dependent on your plant. Ensure vines are well developed before application
Is it useful to apply fertilizer to yam?
Yes please
Chicken manure instead of fertilisers, is this a cheaper and better option?
It's dependent on your accessibility to them.
But a combination of both is a better option
@@ChidavAgriculturalHub Thanking you for this, am a poultry farmer, good more than enough manure, i shall explore this asap. Regards, and keep your highly informative videos going.

Using hose for a small scale and installing an irrigation system

May I know how often one needs to add the fertilizers..Monthly and how many times before harvesting the yams..?
