    I applied one teaspoon of npk on each bag and water very well every other day. This was after i had applied organic manure a month before. And they're doing wonderfully after 4weeks

      I never took that seriously when I started 3yrs ago as I didn't usually water the yam in sacks anytime it rained. But now, I know better since last year and tubers were bigger.
      This year I have decided to plant 2 yam seeds in a bag since I mostly used rice and flower bags.

      Once vines a fully developed. The vines don't necessarily have to have develop fully here all leaves

    What do you do to drain out exceess water from the sacks?
    I'm from Benue State of Nigeria and this novel was of planting yams, our main food crop, certainly interests me

      Urea not as necessary as your phosphate fertilizer and potassium giving fertilizers. They are tuber crops.
      I would advise you use an NPK 15 15 15.
      Once vines are well developed, you can apply

      I think you can still apply inorganic fertilizer since the organic fertilizer digest gradually into the soil for longer periods. The case is different on the other one which is more faster but very technical!

      Yes, you can.
      The inorganic fertilizers are readily available to the plant over a short period.
      So, you can apply inorganic fertilizers for quick action on your field.

    But is it true NPK fertilizer is good for yam other than super gro fertilizer that can be sprayed on the leaves and veins? Someone said the NPK 20,10,10 or 15,15,15 can make yams to turn coloured and lose its taste instead of white. How true is this?
    I'm presently using super gro fertilizer.So I'm confused if I should start applying the one you just emphasized on.

      The yams are not meant to change colour if your application is done at the right rate

    Can I apply 20 10 10 during the early stages of growth (1-2 months after sprouting)? I think this will assist with built up of vegetative tissue, intense root ramification and profuse leaf formation. Then switch to 15 15 15 from the third month post-sprouting. Thank you.

      For your organic, just spread round the sack in a larger quantity now, because no known adverse effect of your organic manure

      It's an NPK fertilizers of ratio 15:15:15.
      It's a compound fertilizer having all the primary nutrients of equal ratio.
      You'll be able to get this from any agrochemical company

    Is it a good agronomic practice to mix NPK and Urea fertilisers and apply? Not just yam in this case but also to plants like pineapple and vegetables.

      Npk already has urea in it.
      The N in the NPK, is nitrogen which is same as urea

      If, doing that would be profitable at the end of the day, of course you can.
      But, you can still grow your with other soils, you just have to make sure the soils are well managed

      You may do monthly. E.g: If you're required to use 150g to produce your yam till maturity, you may choose to split into three of 50g every month.

      The reason being, urea, which has the 20, is responsible for growth and development of leaves, and the purpose is for the tubers to develop well, so as to get the best out of the tubers
