This movie is a masterpiece. I've recommended it to so many reactors, and no one watches it. Rarely anyone ever talks about it, either. It's beyond underrated, to a degree I can't fathom. I don't understand why people are so disinterested in this movie. Thank you for choosing to watch this instead of leaving it up to the masses.
As a violinist, I had the honor of performing on the score for this film and working with Thomas Newman. Thank you for your reaction, and best wishes for your novel!
One of the most underrated performances by Tom Hanks. An underrated movie as well. Watching one of your reactions always enhances a movie. Thanks for pulling rank :)
This was the last film that the great cinematographer Conrad Hall was the director of photography. He won his last Oscar for this film not long after he had passed away.
My Grandfather was Irish. He came to live with us in his 80's. He mostly preferred to watch old movies on AMC and almost never watched or finished watching anything I tried to put on for him. One Saturday night before I went out with my friends, I put "Road to Perdition" on for him. My Mom told me later that not only did he actually finish the movie, he was riveted the whole time. I'm sure the fact that he was a young man during this era probably had a lot to do with it.
Tom Hanks was asked in an interview what films he is proud of, which is inexplicably unpopular. He said 'Road toPerdition' is the one nobody even remembers he was in. He said part of it is that so few people ever saw it. He, like you, also thought the acting, the story, and the direction and filming was just about perfect. It is also a tribute to Hanks's range as an actor. Just think about it for a moment; the same guy stared in 'Road to Perdition' and 'Forest Gump'.
This movie is a masterpiece. It’s criminally underrated. The story, the score, the cinematography, the style….its absolutely perfect. It’s just a beautiful movie. It’s in my top list as one of my favorite movies of all time.
I'm 73 years old and have been a movie-goer since childhood. I was 4 years old when my Aunt Mary took me to see my first movie, "Davy Crockett" starring Fess Parker. Now I enjoy watching other people's reactions to movies that I enjoyed in the past. Since my retirement six years ago, I have watched so many movie reactions. You undoubtedly do the best job of the very many "reactors" that I have observed!
This is definitely one of my top ten movies of all time. The acting, storyline, and the music is outstanding. Watching it again through your perspective was like watching it anew.
I’ve wondered that too. Maybe because this one is a rare Tom Hanks movie where he’s a bad guy. People had gotten used to him playing heroic, likable people.
One of those films that can rightly be called underrated. Beautifully filmed and acted. And great to see Hanks, Jude Law and Daniel Craig playing against type. One final great performance from Paul Newman too.
This is such an underrated film. Hanks had a great run from the early 90's to the early 2000's. Newman had so much charisma, no matter the role he played.
Honestly, if you take away the cars, this really does have an old-timey western frontier feel about it. So glad you picked this to view, it's really what makes a channel sometimes.
Good for you! Appreciate the reaction. This IS one of my favorite films all time. Hanks!! The music, cinematography, acting….the scene in the rain when he kills the guys in the street is one of my favorite scenes in any movie.
It’s always great to find a similar depth of love for a film. This one is consistently among my top-10 of all time. Every aspect of it seems perfect. I seldom buy soundtracks, but I bought this one, and quickly followed it with a couple others by Thomas Newman. I hope you’ll continue with Paul Newman. Here’s my three biggest recommendations: The Verdict (1982) great courtroom drama by Sidney Lumet. Nobody’s Fool (1994) a great adaptation of Richard Russo’s novel. The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) a rare comedy role, and it’s the Coen brothers.
Im waiting for this to air as I write this. THANK YOU THANK YOU for reacting to this masterpiece!!!!!!, I cant understand why other reactors havent watched this. LOVE YOU and your channel!!!!
@@MadisonKThames your welcome, my 4 other favorite movies are "scarface", "rainman," "the whale", and for horror "hereditary". would love to see those on your channel but I believe you have seen "rainman"? ONE more favorite is the 1968 "planet of the apes". ALL great. Keep up the good work!
A sleeper. Never ceases to amaze me how people react after seeing this. "Wow! Wish I had seen this when it first was released." I love this movie. Can't wait to see Madison's take on it.
I remember seeing it at the movie theater with my mom. We were both blown away by it. Like each scene could be a framed painting. Especially the kid "looking into the room watching someone get gunned down" scene. And what surprised me was that it's based off a graphic novel!!
Such a great film, Madison, I'm so glad that you enjoyed it, I have it at home. The acting in this is superb, great writing too, great cinematography and soundtrack.
Madison! WOW! I loved that you went black and white in shock!!! One of my all time favorites. Very impressed that you know about Lone Wolf and Cub, Madison. One of the most epic and tragic samurai saga. Collected the graphic novels, loved the different versions of the film and TV series, and this film ranks up there with all of them. And I love the soundtrack. I often play it in my studio when I am in a dark place because of a very difficult commission. This film will always bring me to tears and when I became a single dad, it will haunt me forever.
Irish actor Ciaran Hinds is one of my favourite British period drama actors. I`m surprised so few people know him. He, for example, portrayed Albus Dumbledore`s brother Aberforth in The Deathly Hallows ll.
So cool that this was the last film for both Paul Newman and cinematographer Conrad L. Hall, who worked together for a couple classics in the 60s. This is one of my favs from Sam Mendes.
A fine film.i cannot fault it. Auch a classy film. The wonderful Conrad Hall was the cinematographer and won the academy award posthumously for this film. Great reaction. I love the score too.
Delightful reaction to a great movie, as expected. Your immediate comprehension of the twisted plot as it unfolded and your typically perceptive analysis made the whole experience fresh and new for me. Outstanding, ma'am.
Great pick. My favorite Tom Hanks movie and my favorite Paul Newman movie all in one. I've always seen it as if it is a passing on the baton of Mr. Everyman to a new generation. And it fittingly is passed by Hanks taking out Newman with a machine gun. Good on you for making this executive decision. Hopefully there will be more, as there are so many great movies that are not getting the attention they deserve. This one is a work of cinematic art, in the music and in the visuals that give you the impression you are at the Louvre when you are watching it. Be on the lookout for the painting "The Death of Marat. You will only get a quick glimpse before it goes off to the next scene. And yeah, Daniel Craig is the bad guy, But Jude Law is the Devil. Notice how the music becomes discordant whenever Jude Law shows up in a scene. Thomas Newman was once again robbed at the Academy Awards the year this one came out. Just finished listening to your commentary and I am heartened to hear you had the same impression. One thing though, It wasn't the ocean. It was the Michigan coast side of Lake Michigan a little north of Indiana. I don't know where they actually filmed it but it looks like it does around the Grand Haven / Holland area.
So glad you saw/reacted to this!! Not enough do and it’s a great all star packed (without over during it just solid scenes with all) movie that has such a great storyline to match plus soundtrack and cinematography etc
I loved this movie when it first came out and never understood why it was not more popular. I am so happy that you loved it as much as I do. If my Swiss cheese brain remembers right, Tom Hanks was in 3 movies that year and this was the least popular of the 3. Also, if I remember right, not a single Oscar nomination for any category. Easily one of the most underrated films of all time IMHO. Thank you so much for this reaction. I no longer feel alone in my love for Road to Perdition.
@Need2Pleaze On the contrary, this movie won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Conrad L. Hall, the DP who shot this film, died shortly thereafter and never got to hold his Oscar, as it was awarded posthumously. It also had a bunch of Oscar nominations. It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Paul Newman), Best Art Direction (Dennis Gassner and Nancy Haigh), Best Original Score (Thomas Newman), Best Sound (Scott Millan, Bob Beemer and John Pritchett), and Best Sound Editing (Scott Hecker).
This movie definitely deserves more love. It's one of my favorites. And totally agree with you about the score - it sets the mood perfectly. The word "haunting" is overused sometimes, but it absolutely fits here.
16:05 This song and scene where they arrive always gives me goosebumps and brings a tear to my eye... my favorite one from the soundtrack! Epic with the city visuals (almost like a time capsule), sad and at the same time with hope sprinkled in there. "Road to Chicago" ❤
So glad you loved this Madison! I did too, and it's my second favorite movie of the 21st century (just after Children of Men). I honestly think this is Tom Hanks best performance. But all the performances are all good in this movie, especially Tyler Hoechlin (who plays Mike Jr.).
LOVE YOUR REACTION! This is a sad but an emotionally BEAUTIFUL & moody film with a great moving soundtrack and an incredible cast & performances. Told through the eyes of a son coming of age in an era during a lifestyle that is usually glamorized in movies, this harsh but warm naturalistic depiction of a father & son relationship is so powerfully sincere & honest. I've watched this several times and always ends wiping away tears. One of Hank's best films and maybe the amazing Paul Newman's last that doesn't get enough recognition.
This film doesn't get the attention it deserves. Another Sam Mendes movie you might consider watching is American Beauty. An underrated gem . Thanks for the great reaction. 👍👍
Sorry I'm bombing your comments. I'm from Davenport, Iowa, part of the Quad Cities. One of the other towns in our urban orbit is Rock Island, Illinois, and that's where this takes place. Rooney was named after John Looney, who ran the Quad Cities in the 20s. He owned a paper lock, stock, and barrel and used it to batter his political and financial opponents. Looney is well known here and organized crime was part of our life back then: bootleggers in the 20s and 30s, Capone played cards in Muscatine just to the south of us. Does it kind of suck that this film is how we got known? Kind of. But practically everyone here is proud. Thank you for sharing your reaction!
I bought this movie on DVD at Walmart about 20 years ago not knowing anything about it except for the actors and director. It’s probably one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The part in the rain where Michael guns down Rooney’s gang has to be one of the best scenes I’ve ever watched.
The graphic novel is fantastic, and the art work detailed and beautiful. The film was a little different, but I love that MaxAllan collins, the author of the graphic novel also wrote the novelisation of the film, including all of the changes to his original work...
Great choice. A very overlooked slow burner of a film. The story is originally from a graphic novel - written by Max Allan Collins, a prolific author of all manner of books, many of which are historical crime novels - like his series on Eliot Ness, and the Untouchable. This story is actually taken from the real-life gangster family of John Patrick Looney, and his son Connor. Many of the real locations exist today - look up "History & Architecture John Looney Legend Tour" - in Rock Island Illinois Max Allan Collins grew up, and he may still be there, just a few miles up the Mississippi River, from Rock Island, in Muscatine, Iowa. For some other Paul Newman films - Hombre is a great western, and another great, overlooked film - Absence of Malice.
glad you liked this, it came along around the same time as Forrest Gump , Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile and Apollo 13 all so epic that this slipped under the wire when in fact it is an awesome movie thats stands on its own. Tom Hanks is the best
"Nobody's Fool" w/Jessica Tandy and Bruce Willis was nearly his last. Watching Newman portray a man who is destitute, with complete reality, was amazing
One of the great films in the last 25 years, such a shame we don’t get movies like this anymore. Movies now are all about pushing agendas and messages. But enjoyed watching this thank you.
A story set in the year my father was born. My whole family came from an Irish background; both grandparents lived off of Ireland Road. This was an iconic time in America and was one of Tom Hanks best performances
The graphic novel was based in turn on the great manga Lone Wolf and Cub by writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima. It’s about one samurai whose family is slain by a rival clan, except his son Daigoro. Then he loses his rank and must therefore walk the path of Meifumado (Hell, Perdition) to avenge his family and his honor, carrying about Daigoro in a baby cart. There was a series of movies about him.
Hombre was an adaptation of an Elmore Leonard's novel. Other fantastic adaptations of Leonard's work include Stephen Soderberg's Out of Sight, Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown, Barry Sonnenfeld's Get Shorty and two versions ofr 3:10 to Yuma. Sadly, other adaptations aren't so great.
Someone probably already said it but in the event they didn't, that was Lake Michigan at the end of the film. The movie basically centered around Chicago and the far outskirts. Where else!
You made a great choice picking this movie, I'm surprised it never won any polls. I've loved this movie for years, definitely won of my favorite "mob movies". It's such a beautiful piece. The acting, the musical score, the cinematography. It really all comes together perfectly.
One of the Best Films EVER Made, for sure! Such a Hidden Diamond of a Film! I have watched this movie probably over 25 times since I first saw it in the late 90s.. I always love it and keep coming back.. Another Cinematic Awesome movie for you is "The Talented Mr. Ripley" with Jude Law, Matt Damon, Gwenneth Paltro and Phillip Semore Hoffman. I've always said that if Hitchcock were still alive, he would have made The Talented Mr. RIpley. It's another Masterpiece of a film.. Great Reaction!
hey Madison, love this movie!!!!! Tom Hanks was excellent, my only complaint is , they were headed to the north shore of lake Michigan and there are no bluffs even close to those!! being from Chicago, that always bugged me, loved your reaction and ill see you at the next movie!!
FINALLY someone reacts to this absolute classic and masterpiece. This film is so underrated it's criminal. And Tom Hanks can literally play any role convincingly. He's the G.O.A.T.
The kind old man that took the bullet out of Michael Sr, you said "Well luckily that guy was some kind of doctor..." Yes, he was an old time independent farmer, and a good one would have been all of these: farmer, carpenter, mechanic, handyman, teamster, and veterinarian, at the very least. Now he is also a father.
I told you this was a great movie. I knew you would like it. Terrific story. Great cast. I was in Geneva and watched them film the scene where they ran out of the hotel and made made their escape. That was a fun afternoon!
Thanks for your reaction. This movie is so good and you like the same things I like in movie. The track shot at the beginning with Thomas Newman's score is wonderful for the last Paul Newman's movie. I could listening to it for hours. The fathers and sons relationships are the core foundation of this masterpiece. Mendes was a master. Craig and Law are terrifying!!!
One of the greatest films ever, I like that you also view it the same. Keep watching great films. A few great films which you haven't reacted to that you should definately watch are Taxi Driver (1976), No Country For Old Men (2007), Casino (1995), L.A Confidential (1997) and Se7en (1995).
Personally, I wouldn't always trust polls. Often the most 'popular' opinion doesn't mean it's the best. It really isn't, and this isn't just confined to the theatre of movie reactions.😏
I went into this with a similar attitude to the one I had when I first viewed Empire of the Sun. They both had such little fanfare that I expected very little and both times I felt my heart soar.
absolutely LOVE this movie ... the moral questions raised is like Pirates .." can you be a pirate and a good man" so so so nice to relive it for the first time sharing our reaction... the music .. the passing .. the actors and characters... the quiet calm of intensity in Tom Hanks portrayal... and yes the machine gun scene being done quietly.... PLEASE check out the movie Swept from the Sea .. a period romance with Racheal Weiss and Vincent Perez and also has Kathy Bates and Ian McKellen and a few other you might recognize... one of my all time favorites for music and cinematography and NONE of the reactors I have suggested it to ever has watched it

By Michael Sr. shooting Maguire at the end, he preserved Michael Jr.’s chance at seeing Heaven.

Many of the real locations exist today - look up "History & Architecture John Looney Legend Tour" - in Rock Island Illinois
Max Allan Collins grew up, and he may still be there, just a few miles up the Mississippi River, from Rock Island, in Muscatine, Iowa.
For some other Paul Newman films - Hombre is a great western, and another great, overlooked film - Absence of Malice.
It did get nominated for awards from what I recall, but yes… I agree. It’s overlooked because it’s never talked about today
glad you liked this, it came along around the same time as Forrest Gump , Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile and Apollo 13 all so epic that this slipped under the wire when in fact it is an awesome movie thats stands on its own. Tom Hanks is the best
This was Paul Newman's last on-screen performance, although the animated movie "Cars" was released after this.
"Nobody's Fool" w/Jessica Tandy and Bruce Willis was nearly his last. Watching Newman portray a man who is destitute, with complete reality, was amazing
@@barryscott8041 Just going by the available information, "Nobody's Fool" was released in 1994, "Road To Perdition" in 2002.
Stanley Tucci plays Frank Nitti, Al Capone's enforcer and No2.
This film is a underatwd masterpiece its hard to believe your patrons didn't vote for this film T Hanks hes tge greatest modern day actor
One of the great films in the last 25 years, such a shame we don’t get movies like this anymore. Movies now are all about pushing agendas and messages. But enjoyed watching this thank you.
As much of a Star Wars, LotR, and history nerd as I am (tattoos included), this is my all time favorite movie
I also only found this movie from Thomas Newmans score from another movie and then took the music path to this, I’m so grateful
A story set in the year my father was born. My whole family came from an Irish background; both grandparents lived off of Ireland Road. This was an iconic time in America and was one of Tom Hanks best performances
Great film!
The cinematography is stunning.
Tom Hanks is great, as always and so is Paul Newman, and he never lost those beautiful eyes.
Tom Hanks said this is one of his favorite roles. And a pre James Bond Daniel Craig.
Paul Newman in “Hombre” is such an underrated classic! Definitely worth reacting to...... 💯🔥🤙🏽😎
I agree. Another astounding Newman film is "Sometimes A Great Notion" with Henry Fonda and Lee Remick
This movie is a masterpiece. It might be a good film journey to find the films that won Oscars for cinematography through the years, as this one did,
Someone probably already said it but in the event they didn't, that was Lake Michigan at the end of the film. The movie basically centered around Chicago and the far outskirts. Where else!
memories. I saw this film with my father and he passed away soon after(15 years). We both liked it.
How did this movie not get at least CLOSE to winning a poll?!
Not enough people have seen it to know how great it is
I’m so glad you watched this! One of the best comic book films ever made. And your commentary is very insightful. Keep it up miss.
You made a great choice picking this movie, I'm surprised it never won any polls. I've loved this movie for years, definitely won of my favorite "mob movies". It's such a beautiful piece. The acting, the musical score, the cinematography. It really all comes together perfectly.
That's Lake Michigan, specifically the Indiana dunes.
I have always thought this a very good movie and surprised it gets looked over.
hey Madison, love this movie!!!!! Tom Hanks was excellent, my only complaint is , they were headed to the north shore of lake Michigan and there are no bluffs even close to those!! being from Chicago, that always bugged me, loved your reaction and ill see you at the next movie!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it😊
FINALLY someone reacts to this absolute classic and masterpiece.
And he didn't have money problems any more.
I told you this was a great movie. I knew you would like it. Terrific story. Great cast. I was in Geneva and watched them film the scene where they ran out of the hotel and made made their escape. That was a fun afternoon!
Great film, incredible cast. Even the boy who plays Michael, Tyler Hoechlin, is excellent.
Thank you so much for choosing this film.
I'm glad you had that feeling. This movie is extraordinary ❤
Great decision. I've watched this movie dozens of times. Have listened to the director's commentary a few times.
One of the greatest films ever, I like that you also view it the same. Keep watching great films. A few great films which you haven't reacted to that you should definately watch are Taxi Driver (1976), No Country For Old Men (2007), Casino (1995), L.A Confidential (1997) and Se7en (1995).
No Country for Old Men is one of my favorites!❤️
LA CONFIDENTIAL!!!@@MadisonKThames
Personally, I wouldn't always trust polls. Often the most 'popular' opinion doesn't mean it's the best.
It really isn't, and this isn't just confined to the theatre of movie reactions.😏
I love this movie, my favorite Tom Hanks role. Iremember Paul Newman from the 60's. Cool Hand Luke is a great movie.
As someone who has a…rocky relationship with his father, this movie hits very VERY hard.
I went into this with a similar attitude to the one I had when I first viewed Empire of the Sun. They both had such little fanfare that I expected very little and both times I felt my heart soar.
2:57... "Lone Wolf and Cub route"
As soon as I heard that I was like "SHE'S GONNA LOVE THIS."
Yeppp!🐺
The boy that played young Michael is Tyler Hoechlin, who is Superman in the CW series.
And glad to see you're a writer too. I'm an author and a journalist myself!!
absolutely LOVE this movie ... the moral questions raised is like Pirates .." can you be a pirate and a good man" so so so nice to relive it for the first time sharing our reaction... the music .. the passing .. the actors and characters... the quiet calm of intensity in Tom Hanks portrayal... and yes the machine gun scene being done quietly.... PLEASE check out the movie Swept from the Sea .. a period romance with Racheal Weiss and Vincent Perez and also has Kathy Bates and Ian McKellen and a few other you might recognize... one of my all time favorites for music and cinematography and NONE of the reactors I have suggested it to ever has watched it
PLEASE watch *Arlington Road* starring *Jeff Bridges* and *Tim Robbins*
"Runny! Too soon?"
Nope. So glad you enjoyed this.
I just watched this movie yesterday on Paramount Plus!
