The cornbread is for 'sopping' juice... We would soak up the cabbage juice or the gumbo or the beans. But our favorite is with any type of greens, turnips or mustard or collard greens. The juice is called pot liquor and it is delicious soaked up by the cornbread!
I'm researching this, and this was part of a Los Angeles trip. Willie Mae's only has two locations, and that's clearly not the original location in New Orleans (which some have noted is closed after fire damage). The other location is in [correction] Venice (Los Angeles), California.
Chicken became a cultural standard in our South in much the same way as mutton in your northern counties. Chickens do very well in our woods. Inviting the pastor over for a Sunday dinner of chicken is a cultural norm and "a chicken in every pot" is a blessing.

I admit that I had the chance to watch this entertaining Jolly youtube feature of Brits try Best Fried Chicken In America with my husband today (I discovered this channel via my hubby's youtube). Josh and Olly do seem to really enjoy the chicken featured and them describing how the food tastes compared to the chicken they eat in UK also supplements the video.
This one is great! My grandmother made my favorite fried chicken (shallow fried in cast iron). Ironically, her name was Willie Mae!! Must be something to that name 😂. Cheers boys
My understanding is that the usual fast food fried chicken places (KFC, Popeyes, Church's, etc.) use a pressure fryer. That in an of itself results in excellent moisture retention. But that should be consistent around the world. The hard part is keeping the meat moist (especially white meat that dries out easily) when pan frying, which takes longer and typically produces a crispier fried batter.
They made a video some years ago trying many different british fried chicken, I bet you can tell yourself from how they look that these 2 aren't exaggerating 😂
the thing is American chickens are low quality from being raised so poorly and inhumanely as well as being fed garbage and hormones, so imagine if Willie Mae's actually used quality chickens...
@@OlJackBurton Depends on the source. There are a lot of farms that still raise heritage breed chickens. Even some in the US that raise traditional Asian breeds like "yellow hair". I've bought those before at the suggestion of Asian friends, and those are typically smaller and have smaller legs and small amounts of breast meat, but a richer chicken flavor that well suited for making chicken soup. But no - growth hormones can't be used in American poultry. Antibiotics can be used to promote growth, but must be stopped well before slaughter and undetectable in tests at the time of slaughter, and the USDA inspects all poultry facilities. They're big because of the breeding of white broiler chickens that grow faster on less feed with large body parts - especially the legs. How humanely chicken are raised varies. Some farms still raise white broilers in more humane conditions, while some might raise heritage breeds in large facilities. I've bought chickens from a local facility where they clearly had live chickens in house and were slaughtering them in the back room. I do remember going to this place once where they said their slaughtering equipment wasn't working, but we could buy a live one and take it home if we knew how to slit its throat and let it bleed out and remove the feathers.

I agree, the main thing chickens do is fry, and we're all better off for it 😁 I've been to New Orleans only once in my life, and it was just for a few hours for a university tour. So it was straight from the airport to the tour and back to the airport, no time for anything else. I wish I'd have known about Willie Mae's and also had more time there to try it; it sounds delicious.
I am from the South, born and bred, and going to NO was the thing to do, road trip every 6 weeks for the weekend, and Willie Mae's and a few others there are TOP NOTCH FOOD.
We had heard about Wille Mays years ago from a Food Channel episode and got the chance to visit the old location. Absolutely the best fried chicken we've had.
Not for long but yeah they can fly enough to get onto a perch or make a quick getaway from predators. As long as they aren't the mega fat factory farmed birds, I doubt those can even walk.
@bladepanthera so this place is about 40 min from me, and when I've tried to go there before, they were closed. Yamyang--I'm not usually a fan of sweet sauces on meat, and this hasn't won me over. Their pieces were hacked up (lots of bone, little meat) or wings, and the honey made it so sticky. I think I'd rather just have the fried chicken. My friend's pork bulgogi was good, as was her fish "corn dog". We both enjoyed the jeon. Deokbokki was good, the sauce has a kick that sneaks up on you. I can see why the consistency might be a thing for some people. Verdict: I'll go back there again, but might try other dishes, would only repeat the jeon or the bulgogi. The "potato salad" side was interesting....more like cold mashed potatoes with pieces of veggie in it, less creamy-mayo than American potato salad. Liked it more than I thought I would, would probably love that salad in summer!
I watch these videos thinking of the uptight food critics out there writing their caustic column and living on payroll while these couple of kids are having so much fun 😂
I absolutely love their content and I really hope that the camera/ sound crew get their own plates of everything I know sometimes they give them a bite here or there but I really hope the crew also gets to enjoy their own plates of all this yummy food ❤ cheers mate! xoxo 😘
I don't know about that. I've seen comments saying it was unfair that they didn't just give their crew their own separate orders. In any case, they've addressed this before - that they try to do what they can to reduce food waste. I've seen criticisms from others that they're somehow wasting food, when people didn't know that they were sharing what they didn't consume on camera with the crew. But this only shows that you can't please everyone and there will be critics regardless of what they do.
The portions in American restaurants are often deliberately large with the intent that you'll take some home to have a second meal the next day. If you eat it all in one go that is on you.
Has Jolly ever considered doing food tours in Africa? I so enjoy watching Jolly and the Korean Englishman and learning about Korean and other Asian cultures and food. I'm a vegan - but I LOVE watching you guys try the various foods. This is no exception. Love the comments! Thanks for another great video!
Not a vegan, but I do hope that someday they can make a vegan Fried Chicken substitute that tastes close to the real thing so that you folks aren't left out. I honestly feel bad about it lol
After watching these two guys, how can you still be a vegan?
Ah you poor soul. You’re missing out big time!
Condolences 🤣🤣🤣
The dip in the gravy mash sealed the deal; that is a PROPER technique!🙌🏻
The cornbread is for 'sopping' juice... We would soak up the cabbage juice or the gumbo or the beans. But our favorite is with any type of greens, turnips or mustard or collard greens. The juice is called pot liquor and it is delicious soaked up by the cornbread!
Sounds like the liquor from the south of England
The Louisiana series have to be my favorite at the moment! From the beignets to now the fried chicken, awesome 👍

I know they took the BEST nap after this meal💯 my grandma had dedicated rooms for people to take naps after Sunday dinners at her house cause she knew she could throw down in the kitchen😂🩷🩷 you get you a plate, eat and drink your ice tea/drink, get yo dessert, and go take a lonnngggg nap until the family function is over. Wake up and go make you a plate to take home
I'm so delighted to see they made it to Willie Mae's!!
"Muffin" is a shape, and is made in a muffin pan. There are many kinds of muffins: chocolate, blueberry, cornbread and many, many other flavors. Muffins are made very often using box cake mixes, with or without other ingredients.
As compared to a cupcake, which could be just a muffin in a paper holder! I suppose generally sweet vs a muffin ,which could be savory or both.
Ever see an "English Muffin?" Obviously, Brits are confused about muffins!🫣 😂 (Don't come at me, I know people in the UK call them "crumpets.") 🤭
@@TiaTeresa467 English muffins and crumpets are not usually regarded as the same by British people...
@@nathanwahl9224 cupcakes are usually iced/frosted
I try not to tease but as someone from the South, it does come across like "Brits try Flavor" 😂😂😂 You boys going to be alright with all those seasonings?
They definitely play into the stereotype for the camera. I mean, the UK invented Chicken Tikka Masala, it's not like they're completely barren of flavour :P
Also adding to the reply above, they are honorary Koreans at this point because of their other channel korean englishmen. Josh spent half his life in korea and even have a korean wife who is quite literally a korean masterchef finalist. If anything they'd probably tried more flavor
@@elsasalah oh in that case they’re DEFINITELY playing it up for the camera, because South Korea are fried chicken masters. Their chicken is unbelievable.
@@joshl4111 To be fair I'm extremely certain it was a British *Pakistani* man who made that but you're right hahaha. It's funny because you know for a fact they've tried things from all over the world for ten years and they're still kind of like this.

hey guys, thanks for all the content. I tend to struggle with my appetite but your videos make me happy and hungry. I even want to travel and try some of the different foods you've shown. Thank you again!
I live in Los Angeles but only been to the original location in NOLA.. haha! Thanks for reviewing the Venice location since I was always curious about it.. will eventually try it out and compare.
Cheers boys
Shallow fried in cast-iron is the BEST!!
I had an Aunt Willie, I wonder if her middle name was Mae? She was my dad's aunt, I wonder if she made great fried chicken??
I want to know what others are doing to their chicken that Josh and Ollie are always so surprised by the US's juicy chicken. 🤔
killing it a second time
My understanding is that the usual fast food fried chicken places (KFC, Popeyes, Church's, etc.) use a pressure fryer.
@@OlJackBurton
Depends on the source.
Anyplace with a double name is going to be damn good 😅! Willie Mae’s, Danny Sue’s, Barbara Jean’s 😅

I think Josh and Ollie need to have their own fried chicken competition to see who can make the best.
Willie Mae's was damaged by fire in April so I am glad you got to try them.
Just remember the amount of food you get here is suppose to be enough for lunch the next day, love watching you guys!
I love you guys! You would make every Grandma happy to feed you, you guys love food and love eating it.

The cornbread they had was only missing one ingredient. Chili to dip it in after you've buttered it.
I scream every time, “where’s the butter?!!”.
@@ST-ov8cm I am from NY (not the city) and even living in one of the most remote, residential areas of the east coast, and north...I know cornbread needs to be buttered. Preferably with something to dip it in that is hearty and meaty.

In my opinion, cornbread should not be sweet! However, thinking that's what Ollie's tastebuds want...plus butter, of course!! 😂 He would probably enjoy (BUTTERED!!) cornbread made with "Jiffy Mix!!"
Willie Mae’s has been on my bucket list forever, I’m waiting to purchase my ticket to New Orleans and have a culinary pilgrimage 😭

Dipping the chicken into the potatoes and gravy was such an American thing.

Dude, the airport food is just as good!
@@katyas-momMeh, as someone who doesn't like seafood, in an airport full of seafood, the food I did eat there felt about the same as anywhere else 😅

We had heard about Wille Mays years ago from a Food Channel episode and got the chance to visit the old location. Absolutely the best fried chicken we've had.
Josh and Ollie: "Chickens don't fly, but they do fry."
Someone get these guys to a chicken farm. They definitely do fly. XD
Not for long but yeah they can fly enough to get onto a perch or make a quick getaway from predators. As long as they aren't the mega fat factory farmed birds, I doubt those can even walk.
@chriswhinery925 yup meat farm birds usually struggle to walk once they're over about 2-3months old

Finally got to try jeon, deokbokki and yamyang chicken Saturday, guys!
And?? Enjoy them? 😁
One of the secrets to it is the brining of the chicken and then dipped into buttermilk before dredging with the spiced flour mixture.
You gotta try cornbread with cheese in it, I chop it up and mix it in, or try it with butter & honey!
I watch these videos thinking of the uptight food critics out there writing their caustic column and living on payroll while these couple of kids are having so much fun 😂

The multitude of cultures in Africa are largely unknown and/or are ignored by people from European cultures. It seems like a completely untapped source of extremely interesting and informative content. Just an idea.

Wow! This is one of your best clips from New Orleans, I love this!! Thanks for the constant great video clip reviews. ❤
This clip is from California, but still a good one. The Willie Mae's there, despite not being the original, seems to do things the same way and has the quality of the New Orleans location.
They didn't say they were in California but Ollie said that it was established in Louisiana. I'm not trying to be difficult but Josh and Ollie did say that they were in California because they recently posted a video of Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. They're still posting videos from Louisiana.

Some restaurants put their cornbread batter in muffin pans while others put it in a sheet pan. The common way to cook it at home is in a cast iron skillet.
