My Cheap $275 Ford Aerostar Isn't Terrible!

  • This sad little van was sitting at the State surplus auction lot with nobody looking at her or even showing an interest. When the online bidding was about an hour from closing there was still not a single bid. Within the last 60 minutes, myself and three other bidders ran up the bidding on Ford's first attempt at a minivan. When the dust settled and the auction closed, I was the winning bidder at a whopping $275.

Ours had captain chairs in the back and a "control" panel in the rear with, get this, head phone jacks. I also wanted to turn one of these into a Star Trek shuttle due to the outside shape.

I fixed those issues and had to put water hoses on it. I had to get creative with the heater hoses because mine has dual zone heating and cooling. It has served me well so far.

It probably has the 3.0 V6, simple and durable. The transmissions were weak in these but run it until it breaks and get another one. I'm curious to see if it grows on you like green mystery mold.

Parents had a 1990 Aerostar extended. Only real problem it had was the AC going out on the way to Disneyworld in a traffic jam, as well as squeaky power steering. They sold it in 2003, I found the VIN recently and according to a vin check it soldiered on until 2017 when it was sold for scrap. Fun fact, when the Aerostar came out, ford posed it in picture ads next to the space shuttle lol.

I'm loving doing that one wheel peel in this van! I've been driving her exclusively since picking her up this past Wednesday and it's slowing starting to grow on me. Might treat her to a new muffler if our relationship continues like this.

Wow!!! RWD!!!! Just keep it!!... it could be good as your surplus auction van, take tools, jumper, parts, etc when you go inspect the vehicles your bidding for.... i would but it!, but im in Oregon. Love your videos!! 👍👍

East Coast Classics legit when I seen the vid I was thinking rip that headliner off and take the back seats out of that baby I'd keep it until the wheels fell off! I wish I was in DE to buy it from you. My grandma has one sitting in the drive way here in CA but it'd take way to much work to get it running. That's mint. Keep up the great vids!

I totally agree with ya on how this simple little van might change someones life. That might be the next step for it after I'm done with it. Just don't know yet cause I certainly don't want to dump off a problem for someone else without the means to deal with it. Let me think about it some.

I think it would make a great tradesman's van. It'll haul tools and building materials just fine with no pretty headliner. Some independent carpenter, electrician or plumber would love it to death. I'd do the deferred maintenance and then flip it for $1500 or $2000.

Here are some of my own observations: That poor headliner looks like it was vandalized with a razor blade, what a shame, but it's replaceable I would think....then again what you're planning on doing by taking that fabric out and leaving the foam backing there would seem to be ok....I could tell immediately by the rear taillights (assuming they're original to that particular vehicle) that's a 1997...I will admit for a '97 XLT I'm surprised as one of the other commenters that the front windows are cranks, also no privacy glass which seems a bit odd considering it's an XLT....the rear bench seat appears to be in very nice shape and was moved to the middle (which on that particular vehicle likely came with a 3/4 split bench in the middle originally), as you could interchange all the middle/rear seating since the floor sockets were the same....the rocker panels and body are in excellent shape, wow no rust which was a big problem on those Aerostars (I'm on my 5th one, so I know lol....my first one was a regular length RWD, the next three and my present one were/are extended length XLT AWD models)...everything I've seen so far is fixable or replaceable, should you keep it and decide to invest some money in it you may even find some original parts leftover at dealers as I've done over the years, but you'll likely have to go the aftermarket and salvage yard routes.....I hope you keep it, those Aerostars are work horses and are just too handy to not keep around if you can...so great for hauling it's not even funny....we didn't see enough of the undercarriage to know if it's a rust bucket under there, but I'm going to venture a guess and say it isn't based on the nice condition of the rocker & side panels...speaking of which, it appears yours hasn't been on a lift very much, if at all for that matter, since the rocker panels aren't all bent up where the lift arms go. Last thing before I forget, just to forewarn you, is the rear wiper assembly is a pain to replace yourself, at least it was for me many years ago; I guess at the time I wanted to save a few bucks by doing it myself, but if I'd known how much of a nuisance it would be I'd have forked out the money instead and had that done somewhere.

I own three of these minivans and I think they're great. They all have round 138,000 mi on them. You got stuff with little deal. I even have one of them insured with haggerty. I get 28 mi a gallon with the 3L. Seems to do about the same maybe about 25 on the highway in a 28 is mixed driving. Yeah looks like you bought it back in 2020. Thanks for showing it

Whatever you do, please don’t scrap it. In a time where so many cars are built to last 2-3 years . That car was built in a time where they were built to be kept in the family for generations. And I believe there’s people in need now in days who would love a car like that , cause a car is better than no car .

Fleet spec XLT is different than public sale spec. If this were built for a dealer I believe it would have included power windows, cruise, and tape player as standard equipment with the XLT trim

Growing up as a kid in the 80s my grandparents neighbor across the Street had just bought a brand new one. And one of my elementary school teacher had one as well. I always thought these things were ugly. But everyone I knew that had one kept these Van's for decades. They were very reliable. Although they fell apart they still kept running. I'd use it as a work van.

Minivan burnout for the win! Deep down inside I've always liked those vans (shhhh don't tell anyone), and I remember seeing one with a manual years ago - just looked like it'd be fun. You should be able to get at least $1,000 for that thing. It runs, moves, and stops - that's a thousand dollar car - list it for $1,750 and let someone talk you down though. LOL Good luck with it!

My biggest complaint with the Aerostar was the stationary passenger seat. They could have put an adjuster on there but they didn't. If you are a tall guy, you don't fit in that seat.

    • @hullinger

The body is good! Rare for an Aerostar. I had one, bought new in/97, it was one of the last ones made. Drove it for 13 years and over 315,000 Kim’s. Great van, only reason o got rid of it was the rocker panels were rotting out. I should have kept it. 3 litre Vulcan 6 cyl. engine can’t be killed. Mine was the sport model, the one with all tinted windows and factory fibreglass running boards, 7 passenger. Don’t know why your odometer isn’t working, mine only showed mileage if and only when the key was turned on.

  • @AcmeRacing

In 1988 worked for a company that had an unloved Aerostar, and for a while it was my favorite fleet vehicle. 300 CID six with a five speed manual, 63,000 miles. The body and interior were fine, but it was neglected. With five or six hundred bucks for a set of tires and new shocks it would have been great, but the boss traded it in. I ended up driving a whipped 130,000 mile Voyager that the least senior salesman was done with. Later on I inherited a K-Car station wagon that was even worse.
