Watching this today on the eve of the 45th anniversary of this program--one of the flagships of daytime television as well as the Columbia Broadcasting System--it reminds me of so many of the early years of soaps. The families that began so long ago and continue to exist even today: Forresters, Logans, Spectras & Spencers (B&B) ; Hortons, Bradys & DiMeras (DOOL); Hardys, Webbers, Quartermaines & Spencers (GH); and yes, Brookses, Fosters, Abbotts & Chancellors. Jeanne Cooper as Katherine Sheperd Reynolds Chancellor Thurston Sterling Murphy embodied so many of the genre's Old Guard. She sat proudly among the elite: Rachel Ames (Audrey March Hardy, RN), David Canary (Adam/Stuart Chandler), Charita Bauer (Bert Bauer), Macdonald Carey (Tom Horton, MD), Philip Carey (Asa Buchanan), John Clarke (Mickey Horton), Eileen Fulton (Lisa), Theo Goetz (Papa Bauer), Don Hastings (Bob Hughes, MD), Anna Lee (Lila Quartermaine), Susan Lucci (Erika Kane), Ray McDonnell (Joe Martin, MD), Beverlee McKinsey (Baroness Alexandra Spaulding), Don McLaughlin (Christopher Hughes), Frances Reid (Alice Grayson Horton), Erika Slezak (Victoria Lord), Mary Stuart (Jo), Helen Wagner (Nancy Hughes McCloskey), Ruth Warrick (Phoebe Tyler Wallingford), Douglass Watson (Mackenzie "Mac" Cory), Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory Hutchins) and many others too numerous to name here. Most of these characters, whether their shows or actors or both, are now no more. This is, by far, the most heartbreaking thing when I see this. There are only four true dramatic serials left, friends. FOUR. If ever there were a time to ring the alarm, this is it. Good television must continue to exist. We will have to fight for that.
