So many unexpected moments, stellar performances (we get to see Zorah Lambert who starred in the cult thriller Let's Scare Jessica to Death), and also celebrity cameos (blink and you miss Larry King). And, last but not least, it also has that one _spectacular_ jump scare ... you know the one I mean; it happens in the hospital about three or four minutes after a big jolt that's clearly meant to shock us briefly and then lull us into a sense of ease. Then, BAM! that figure in white appears. Love that.
I was also going to include the original "Haunting" as a film that was really frightening with a minimum of effects. Tension can build throughout the story to terrifying effect. Roman Polanski's The Tenant was also a creepy film with subtle eerie moments.

Saw this when it came out with my mom and sister. I was 16 and it made an indelible impression on all of us. Scott is his usual intensely gruff self but it is the house itself that packs the biggest wallop in this under appreciated classic. Medak masterfully presents the eerily spacious mansion with a sense of underlying yet overbearing menace (if that’s possible). For me, the spookiest elements are achieved simply by depicting uninhabited interiors such as a long darkened hallway or a secreted staircase somewhere in the forgotten reaches of the immense structure. In this annoying age of over the top exaggeration and the requisite pandering to the dumbed down audiences of today, it is important for us to remember jewels like this, when there wasn’t a premium on instant gratification. This film is all about the subtlety. From the running faucets to the medium standing outside the door of the secret attic, everything is chillingly realized here. The music score is also top notch in its melding of classic selections with an unsettling mixture of moody passages. I suppose the only issue I would take with this otherwise perfect ensemble would be the not too subtle wheelchair chase at the film’s climax. Seemed forced and unneeded. Thanks for a very pleasing tribute to a forgotten masterpiece of underplayed terror and your very humorous references to Scott’s relentless scenery chewing in Exorcist lll. After watching as many haunted house and ghost movies as I could at one point, I consider this the best ghost movie I've ever seen, just about tying with The Innocents, and definitely better than original The Haunting. The Others is definitely lower. And I'd say The Watcher in the Woods is inbetween them. You also have The Awakening, which is quite comparable as well, it's final scenes are what ruin that for me, though. The Changeling is also a film that cinematically establishes many of our most well known haunting and paranormal tropes, while in its own right not feeling trite or old hat. It presents each of these now familiar moments with the patience and eerieness they deserve. What I love most, though, is the investigative build up throughout the entire run-time. It keeps you invested right from the moment the first strange happening occurs and it never stops getting better. That's seriously impressive.
Something besides a comedy from a channel that has route in the history and appreciation of such. While not diminishing the impact of the other videos, It's actually great to see a commentary on a different movie genre on this channel.
Agreed. They think they're hot shit critics because they're well-known, but that certainly doesn't mean they are the be-all and end-all in movie critics. No, I don't always like them. They're saying George C. Scott was wasted in this movie? They're full of it. This, to me, is one of the scariest and finest film ghost stories ever made.
This is a FANTASTIC movie. I never wanted to see it until a few months ago. I'm so glad I did. Lots of unexpected things happen, full of suspense and some really scary moments. Highly recommended. George C. Scott was a wonderful actor and a very kind person who only had a gruff exterior. I read some of the comments on the channel I watched it on and an actor who was one of the extras commented that he was in need of money so he could buy food for his family. George found out he wasn't getting paid and gave the guy $50 so he could feed his family. That proves he was a great guy. You would never expect a Hollywood legend or a high paid actor to ever do anything like that.
I remember when it came out on Showtime or HBO. Loved it! When it came out on video cassette, I shared the thrill & bumps with others. I plan to look for it on streaming tonight!
Joe, I just want you to know you’re content is amazing. I feel terrible, though, because I can hardly ever finish an episode in one sitting. Great job!
Tragedy and grief are scary, and this movie really zeroes in on that feeling. I feel like Asian horror films do a good job with this sort of material now. A Tale of Two Sisters is another favorite that explores the horror of heartbreak.
The Changeling is a very important movie. It's hugely influential and, in its own right, a fabulous piece of culture. I watched this with my father a very long time ago and it haunted us both. My daughter carries the torch - she runs a film club.

He was in another horror movie from the 1970s. It was an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue.
I LOVE this movie; I do tend to view it as more of a supernatural mystery than horror though. It's hard to feel afraid for George C. Scott
Something besides a comedy from a channel that has route in the history and appreciation of such. While not diminishing the impact of the other videos, It's actually great to see a commentary on a different movie genre on this channel.
George c Scott is amazing.
A must watch for me every time Halloween and fall rolls around.
I watched this video, then watched the movie, then came back to this video. This movie is awesome. Thank you for talking about it
I love Siskel & Ebert but when they got it wrong they really got it wrong.
Same...they're ...or were...excellent reviewers..but to say a performance is too good for the material?....um...
That growl is inimitable.
R.I.P., GCS.
I remember when it came out on Showtime or HBO. Loved it! When it came out on video cassette, I shared the thrill & bumps with others. I plan to look for it on streaming tonight!
Wow, this is a first, I checked Am Prime UK and for once it's actually included! Right to the top the playlist, thanks Joe.
This is a gem. I watched it 3 times. I forced my wife tonight to watch this film and she agreed it is the best haunting house movie she has ever seen.
Joe, I just want you to know you’re content is amazing. I feel terrible, though, because I can hardly ever finish an episode in one sitting. You’ll sell me on a movie within the first few minutes, so I’ll pause the video and find a way to screen the film, and then return to your video after I’ve seen it. This is absolutely no exception. Great job!
It's a great horror movie but also a great meditation on grief.
George C. Scott is in a Master Class. He's riveting in both movies--hell, in every movie he's starred in.
Tragedy and grief are scary, and this movie really zeroes in on that feeling. I feel like Asian horror films do a good job with this sort of material now. A Tale of Two Sisters is another favorite that explores the horror of heartbreak.
I wanted to like that, but it’s a shame when you can guess the twist ending before the opening credits are done
The Changeling is a very important movie. It's hugely influential and, in its own right, a fabulous piece of culture.
I watched this with my father a very long time ago and it haunted us both. My daughter carries the torch - she runs a film club.
The Changeling is wonderful, George C. Scott is incredible and S & E once again don't know what they're talking about!
George C's performance in this movie reminds me a lot of his Ebenezer Scrooge in 1984's "Christmas Carol".
I watched this last night. Enjoyed it. Some of the sound samples seemed pretty dated now but it is 42 years old. You've earned yourself a new subscriber
Brilliant film, a genuinely unsettling and well made horror
This is easily my favorite channel.
I love The Changeling. Just excellent.
I remember this movie now! The Exorcist III is still one of my all time favorite horror movies as well, which is very closely based off the sequel to the Exorcist in the novels, but is named Legion. Hell of a book too.
I loved this movie. Was lucky enough to see it when it came out in theaters!
