Amen to that, febo! What a consummate professional Donlevy was. He played heroes and heavies with equal skill and was also quite adept at comic roles. He was special.
My introduction to Ella Raines, and the start of my fascination with black and white films. I randomly watched this on Talking Pictures years ago, and have watched it many times since. A brilliant film with a brilliant cast.
I love this film. Luckily I have a horrible memory for films, so I forget key details of the plot - like exactly what happens out on that highway. So I can enjoy them over and over. Ella Raines was a looker, and good actress too.
I agree - the film of SF is fun to watch. I lived in Larkspur (just north of SF) where the town scenes were filmed. Larkspur hasn’t changed very much since 1949. The top of Nob Hill hasn’t change much either. I lived about half a mile down the street where Donlevy is talking to the sign painter. I think that road was the main road through Marin County in 1949 - before Highway 101 was built (not sure though).
Tony Barrett who played Jim Torrence the killer, was mostly known from his work in radio thought out the 50's, mostly in villainous roles. As handsome as he was I can't imagine why he wasn't in more films. Brian Donlevy gave an outstanding performance, as usual. One of Hollywood's finest actors.
I am pleasantly surprised with this film.... I write in 2025 and the film is from 1949 ..... I loved Helen Walker's (Irene Williams) performance.... excellent!!
The scenes with Ella Raines falling in love with Brian Donlevy are magical. Just after the war when America was the greatest country in the world. Now a shadow of its former glory.
Have you ever heard the story of that black servicemen, Issac Woodward, who was beaten blind by those southern cops in 1946? Not such a great country for a certain type of people. I guess you aren’t one of them.
Just because you aren't successful doesn't mean you have to bash America! I immigrate to America from Russia 1999 and I think this is the greatest country ever!
Excellent film, tight story. Loved the (?) '48+/- Packard ! Ella 😍Raines ! B & W ! Accident scene was very dramatic ! Only criticism is Ella looks 24 while lucky Brian looks 40..
For the record, Brian Donlevy is 19 years older than both his film wife, Helen Walker, and likewise coincidentally than Ella Raines who are about 28 or so, and 7 years younger than Mae Marsh (as Mrs. King (Marsha's mother)) who is about 54 or 55. In other words, Donlevy is just barely old enough to be both the father of Raines and Walker and could be the younger brother of Marsh. Got to love these Hollywood May/December romances even though at the 1:15:00 mark Mrs. King taps Donlevy on the shoulder as if he's "25." In reality, he's about twice that at 48. Tony Barrett as Jim Torrence is about 4 years older than both Walker and Raines. Kind of sad the way the story ends. I bet they'd have been happier in a small town running a garage and being among friends.
Advice to men: don't let your wife name you softy. The name may begin innocently but she'll lose a little respect for you every time she says it and especially when you say it. Better names: Brick, Rock, etc.
How can two Bekins movers, see a man, jump in a car, drive away by himself....crash and die..........not be there to tell the story....after they find the brief case in the Van?.....how can the Grand Jury find a case of Murder when the guy died in a firey crash??????? Kind of a big plot hole here.
6 20 pm hora aquí en Maracaibo, Venezuela 🇻🇪 Estoy terminando de volver a ver ésta película. (Segunda vez). Él séptimo ARTE. Sin duda es eso: EL SÉPTIMO ARTE. 🇻🇪👍
A very under appreciated film with a really solid story. I came across it by chance, and didn’t know what to expect, but was really into it
The great Brian Donlevy! What a treat to see this film posted!
He was good

Don't ask me why, but I think this movie is a masterpiece
Brilliant! I brought my family along and we all enjoyed the show very much. Thanks CCC!
What a sweetheart that Idaho gas station girl was...And the vintage S.F. shots in this movie are outstanding.

The name says it all. Masterpiece.
I love this film. Luckily I have a horrible memory for films, so I forget key details of the plot - like exactly what happens out on that highway. So I can enjoy them over and over. Ella Raines was a looker, and good actress too.
Not to mention the great Charles Coburn, along with a very attractive Ella Raines and great photography of my hometown, SF.

So sad how politicians ruined that once great city
Cine retro sigue vigente y espléndido. Excelente película, superior a muchas películas nuevas.

Great movie and acting , suspenseful.
Great to see an American movie where a character actually refers to 'prayer' seriously.
Gotta love how the old guy steals a kiss in the end!
Wow, enjoyed this movie!
Narcissism had not a name in 1949 yet. Perfect example of malignant narcissism.
Second time watching this great movie for me it was Donlevys best movie with a great cast
A great movie I miss those days I wish I was there
Noir films, all classics for their times and remain so. D.O.A (Dead On Arrival) was a good too.
Excellent film, tight story. Loved the (?) '48+/- Packard ! Ella 😍Raines ! B & W ! Accident scene was very dramatic ! Only criticism is Ella looks 24 while lucky Brian looks 40..

Keep your eyes on the road! Well, he went up in smoke!😁😁
J ai beaucoup aimé regarder ce film, merci 😊
I wonder if Harry M Popkin understood he was making a movie about narcissistic abuse?
I just love these old films. Even when a woman is working on a car engine she`s alway wearing full makeup.

Yeah , good movie..😊
Buenísima
Anyone catch the gas price of 18 cents and tax price of 6 cents for 24 cents on the side of the pump at 1:05:20? This was a real good movie.
News traveled fast on those days😳
Impact (1949)
How did they do that?
How can two Bekins movers, see a man, jump in a car, drive away by himself....crash and die..........not be there to tell the story....after they find the brief case in the Van?.....how can the Grand Jury find a case of Murder when the guy died in a firey crash??????? Kind of a big plot hole here.
Why was the hotel key still in her pocket? The hotel clerk said she checked out....doesn't he ask for keys?
Anna Mae Wong legend
I feel so bad for him in the movie he's such a cream puff a nice guy but a cream puff
He WAS a little bit on the sappy side…
Funny, it had a few similarities to Roman Holiday - Aristocrat falling off the radar to live a normal life..
❤❤❤
Car was it a Hudson or Nash tough car when it hit that tanker head on no dents and the lights still worked😂
Dang is that a lamp?

A great film if you can stand the scabby , constant lousy interruptions.
