- Welcome to Small Seeds. This video is all about the Elder Tree, which is a tree who’s history rich in magic, medicine and mystery. Elderberries are one of the most popular herbal remedies for the common cold and flu and today are known worldwide for their benefits. Both the elderberries and elderflowers flowers are utilized in herbal medicine today for a myriad of benefits and they are also used to create tasty treats and refreshing drinks! This video covers everything from how to identify the Elder Tree for its edible flowers & berries, its historical uses, folklore, modern medicinal uses, some science behind its benefits, how to harvest and process them safely at home, and lastly some popular ways to use them! The Elderberries growing among the blackberries on the western side of my yard are at least 12 feet tall and growing. I didn`t harvest any last year because we had an extreme drought and the wildlife needed them way more than me. I helped the birds, reptiles and animals as much as possible during the drought and fed and watered the birds daily and made them a birdbath, put bowls of water in the yard for the bunny and possum, got the possum and raccoon a bag of dog food, and dug a puddle for the toads, snakes and frogs after frogs and toads put eggs in the bunny`s water bowl. I let the bunny eat from my garden because the heat made everything quit producing anyway. The toads hatched a ton of babies in the puddle.
Sounds like a little paradise for the wildlife. We always make sure to leave some for the birds too 😊
@@SmallSeeds I feed the birds every morning at early dawn and a Cardinal and Woodpecker always answer me from their roosts when I call them. It`s like a roll call.

A farmer had cows, one of them were very sick, it could not move, his daughter had made some elderberry drink, it didn't turned out very good, she poured it down the cow's throat, the following morning they saw the cow running all over the place, they were amazed at how the elderberry juice worked . Elderberry is a blessing from God. It's also good for cleaning your eyes.

We are at present fermenting the flowers for champagne soooo easy and take a small organza jewelry bag to cover berries since the small forest we live in shelters so many birds we want a few to enjoy as well lol … great video thank you for sharing

I love this video so much. The vibes I feel from it has brought me back to my childhood- days spent outside and with my great uncle who raised me and taught me so much about plants. I'm in the process of getting approved for a home loan right now and I was hoping I could get it before spring, but it's been 50-70's here in Maryland the past couple weeks & miraculously even in March cherry & apple blossoms are blooming, and it already looks like early spring now.

Diolch for the video! It's flowering time here in Poland, and I've been making syrup with my kids. I also follow your observation of the mixed view of it; in older Slavic times it was said by some that the devil lives in the roots of it. Yesterday I was talking with my daughter's Ukrainian teacher who said that they are both used not just for syrop, but also for lotions for aching joints. At the same time, they are associated with vampires!
That they start flowering around Calan Mai (May 1st), a festival of life (among others things), and we can do the syrup from berries just in time for Calan Gaeaf (November 1st), a festival of death (also among other things), we have light and darkness, day and night, life and death, good and evil, health and poison....maybe that's why in Silesian it's called a wandelbaum, a chang-tree.

What an excellent video! I’m nursing 2 little elder trees in my dining room as I wait for it to be warm enough to plant them in my garden. Do you have any tips for growing a happy Elder?
Elders do well with lots of water but not in an area where the soil is always wet. Usually every year in early Spring I lay down some type of mulch around the shrubs and they seem to love that. It’s usually old chicken bedding with the chicken’s poo or wood chips when we have access to them. Besides that I really don’t do much else for them. Elders are really easy to grow and aren’t too picky! I am sure they would do extremely well with an occasional fertilizing or compost around the trunk.

Thanks for a great story full of information. The drawing at 1.25 is an Illustration made by danish artist, Henrik Arnold Hamilkar Sørensen, to H. C. Andersen's fairy tale about Hyldemor. In english the fairy tale is called The elderbush. Hyldemor is some places translated to 'old Granny' - but she can be compared to a Dryad. A dryad is a tree nymph or tree spirit in Greek mythology. Hyldemor means in directly translation: Elder-mother - as is said in the youtube.

I made elderflower jam by ripping the flowers off the stems and boiling the flowers in water with sugar, lemon and vanilla, so that the flavor is drawn out.
The flowers are then picked up and roughly blended so some structure remains. The flowers are returned to the elderflower juice in the pot with a little bit of aga-agar or pectin and boiled again, after which it is added to a clean jar.

Sambucus Canadensis for American Elder and Sambucus Nigra for the European Elders. Nowadays the American subspecies is also classified as Sambucus Nigra or Sambucus Nigra var. Canadensis. 😊

Can I use the berries to grow an elderberry tree or what do into get a I steeped my elderberry like I would tea I was never told to cook the dry berries. I have never seen them fresh . Keep sharing please
People make the weirdest things their god, and the elder was given BY God for our benefits, God gave us what we need in plants, Pesticides and sprays wiped out a lot of these medicinal plants and its not good to use pesticides without ACTUALLY looking up the plant to KNOW its good or bad...Elderberries took me from an anemic kid and strengthened my body...changed my immunology to strong

BTW unlike the European elderberry, the American elderberry (Canadensis strain) need not be cooked as doesn’t contain the high level of cyanide.

Really enjoyed how you implied the use of hollow elder branches by palaeolithic humans for creating fire, as well as how you intertwined some very interesting information concerning scientific studies/trials in a way that made for effortless listening. I'm left wondering if you are a documentary filmmaker who did this in their spare time? Anyhow, thanks and bravo, it was a pleasure to watch.

(Though not sure how that can be organised?) : I would like to try them out back here near their homeland as I've never seen them before here. We have Potiron which kinda look similar and are ok as a vegetable, but those Prescott Fond Blanc sound like they are on another level altogether. :)

Thank you so much! That is such a lovely compliment. I was an aspiring filmmaker and was going to school for that originally. When I turned 20 I became really interested in plants. Shortly after that we started our family and I stopped going to school. Now I’m just combining my love for plants with what I learned about filmmaking in my spare time.

Thanks! I'd set aside the scientist 'theories' and go with for example herbal knowledge from before the witch burning times, to get to the truth. The irish usually have a lot of knowledge about trees and beliefs as well, beside the healing power info. I've heard it's bad luck to take down an elderberry tree. And, they are often placed near entries of land, roads, for a reason. It's a sacred tree.

For example, raw milk can cure an eye infection. (Just like breastfeeders put their own milk in their eye when you have an eye infection after giving birth). But... the opposite is being spread now. Sick!

Although a lot of great info here if you already have an autoimmune disorder, *it will over-stimulate your immune system and cause a cytokine storm.*
Can I just plant elder seeds or do they do better being pooped out by birds like pokeweed is?
I have a few elder saplings in my garden from the birds planting them lol. However, if you want a bit more control over where they are planted and a better germination rate I would recommend plating them yourself. Something to keep in mind is they do require cold stratification. Also, they are easily propagated from cuttings and many Elder Trees send out suckers which are easily dug up and replanted. Cuttings and suckers are how I prefer to propagate them.
I have few plants in Pakistan, up to flowering it is ok,but after that flowering are not converting into fruiting.

Hmm… are they all the same variety of elder tree? When I first started growing Elder I read that you are supposed to have two different varieties for cross pollination in order to get berries. After reading that I made sure to have two different varieties and never had an issue with fruit set. If you do have multiple varieties please let me know and I will look into it further!

Someone gave me some elderberries to eat once and I got deathly ill from them. She claimed that she ate them all the time. I had no idea that they are supposed to be cooked prior to eating them. She said she ate them raw all the time. Always err on the side of caution.

Most herbalist freeze dry them, and use as a powder which means they don’t have to be cooked.. lol
I've been wanting a freeze drier for some time but they are pretty costly. I didn't know freeze drying elderberries means they don't have to be cooked so thank you for sharing! Time to start saving for that freeze drier lol.

@@SmallSeeds heck yeah, I harvested some early (one of my favorite cold weather teas) and dusted the rest with feather meal.🙃
I guess it just depends on where you live when it comes to “deer resistant” plants. Ours won’t touch it around here but other plants they supposedly don’t eat they nibble on all the time. Glad you were able to harvest some though!
