Just want you to know, Green Eyed Lady, is a song I play a lot on the juke box at my local pub. I only found out today about Jerry's passing nearly three years ago. He was clearly the heart and soul of the band and he had great back up too, very tight. I'm going to look more into the point made about them having a hard time getting the song on the radio. What a gem. I will be sure to share with my friends about Jerry next time they hear me play it.
Wow, I just stumbled across the Sugarloaf video from The Midnight Special, and didn't know that Jerry had passed away 4 years ago. It definitely slipped past me. R.I.P. Jerry 😥
I only recently heard of the passing of Jerry Corbetta. He was one of the best, albeit largely unrecognized, rock keyboardists. Jerry's keyboard prowess and vocal talents were most amazing on a little known Sugarloaf album, Spaceship Earth. That record, from 1970, is, in my opinion, one of the best rock albums of that era. It has a blues rock feel with progressive and jazz overtones, and a unique sound that is hard to compare to other bands. The guitarist for the Spaceship Earth album, Robert Yeazel, was equally phenomenal; he also recently passed away, shortly after Jerry. Beyond their epic "Green Eyed Lady," I hope more rock enthusiasts will discover the incredible music of this relatively obscure band, and especially their Spaceship Earth LP. So glad that John Beaudin had covered this story- John, you totally rock!
i met jerry corbetta after the classic rock all stars played a concert in Addison Illinois. everybody in the band was really nice to everyone. it was a great show.
Thank you for the kind words for Jerry. Here are some kind words from Mike & Valerie Pinera: Jerry Corbetta. If I wrote down every word I know that describes a genuine, sincere, true friend, talented, kind, generous and loving person, it still would not come close to describing Jerry Corbetta. Just ask anyone who knew him. He always had a smile for everyone he would meet either at our concerts, on the street, on airplanes, anywhere. I first met Jerry around 1989 on a tour called "30th Anniversary Of Rock N' Roll". There were many stars on that summer tour but Jerry stood out as a rare gem radiating light and amazing musicianship and integrity. We became friends and shared many a good time. We often spoke about starting a Classic Rock Super Group. Featuring guys who sang their hits and were with well known bands. We invited Dennis Noda on bass and Peter Rivera on drums and so began THE CLASSIC ROCK ALL-STARS. From December 1992 to the winter of 2010 we transcended being just a band and became close friends and family. Valerie and I were guests of Jerry's for several months and saw close up what a super dad to his son Kyle and husband to Cassie he was! I'll close for now and as Peter Rivera says ask you to pray for him anyway you want to. For those of you who saw him performing either with us or with Sugarloaf or Frankie Valli, you know what a real star is all about..... One who radiates Light and Love to all he meets along the way Home. Peace, Love, Joy, Always, is what Jerry Corbetta is....all about. God bless you all. Michael and Valerie Pinera
I saw SUGARLOAF in The El Paso Coliseum with two other acts. Around 1975 Sometimes I can remember all three acts but lately I can not does any one remember?
The family should have had an announcement of his passing. The hand out didn't mention his accomplishments. I was disappointed in it. The man worked very hard to become great. He was very good at music.!! Rest in peace brother and I know that you will join that band in the heavens. Rock on Jerry!!
Actually also the only two songs I know from the band, reminds me to check their other songs. A lack of commercial success doesn't necessarily mean they're not good songs,. At least, no one could say they're "just" a one hit wonder :)
As someone who spent much of his musical exploration investigating so-called "one hit wonder" bands---unfortunately, Sugarloaf was the only band whose remaining material didn't measure up to their one---or two-hits in my eyes. And I had good expectations that the rest of their songs would be as good--if not better--than "Green Eyed Lady" and "Don't Call Us"---but came away very disappointed. And just so you know---that hasn't been my usual experience with these types of bands at all!
RIP Jerry, Thanks for watching everyone.
He really was great showman. Down to earth
I loved his lead vocals and keyboard playing on “ Green lady “ RIP Mr. Corbetta.
