Sonny & Cher show was every Sunday night and it was awesome! Sonny was her husband, first, long before Almond, and Sonny was the brains behind Cher's success, there would be no Cher without Sonny Bono!
Sonny and Cher had a very special relationship, even though their personal relationship fell apart, it was good to see that they were able to repair their friendship before Sonny's death. Cher often said that Sonny's was the catalyst that allowed her to overcome debilitating stage fright.
"I got you babe" is a line I've head a hundred times said by couples to each other. It's really a classic quote. After their divorce, the two reunited many years later on the David Letterman show, did this song, and really took down the house. That video is priceless. Sonny later became a U.S. Congressman and tragically died when he crashed into a tree while skiing - not affectionately known as "A Bono". His wife Mary then ran for his Congressional seat, won, and served 7 terms.
Sonny and Cher were the coolest when I was a kid. Cher was either 19 or 20 in this video. He was quite a few years older than her. He used to work with Phil Spector. They had a variety show called "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour." If you ever get a chance watch a couple of them online!! My sister and I constantly walked around singing this song!! Drove my grandmother nuts!! After they divorced, they were still friends. Sonny went into politics. He was killed in a skiing accident and Cher delivered the eulogy.
Cher was 16 when she met Sonny and they married 2 years later and divorced in 75. Sonny and Cher had a very rocky relationship after the divorce. Cher married Gregg Allman immediately after the divorce was finalized. When Sonny was killed in an accident in 1998, Cher was utterly devastated. She delivered a tearful beautiful eulogy and it was evident that she always loved Sonny.
My girlfriend and I used to sing this together when we met in 1967 we were 15, got married at 19 had 3 great children and a wonderful life together she passed in 2008 aged 54. This was our song thanks for the memories 🙏🇬🇧🇺🇸
One of my favorite moments on David Letterman was a Sonny and Cher reunion. Cher was a scheduled guest and Sonny was in the NBC building for something else and the show was able to make “I Got You Babe” happen again
AT that time, Sonny was campaigning to become mayor of Palm Springs. Cher was promoting her album,Cher".. Moonstruck had not yet come out yet. A producer from Late Night with David Letterman" had called Sonny to ask to be a guest on the show....with Cher. Sonny jumped at the idea. For a brief moment, they would be Sonny & Cher again. Then Cher had called ,all business. He helped her calm her nerves , it was anxiety about going on, but she once called David Letterman an expletive. She was afraid he and David would gang up on her. Weeks later, the producer called again to ask if he would sing with Cher.He wasn't certain if she'd want to sing with him. THE show had puled a fast one on Cher and yet she still did it. .She seen the audience tearing up and Sonny and became the strong one out of the duo. It was teh last time, they sang "I GOT YOU BABE together, live.
When Cher cut loose on higher notes, with that beautiful vibrato and rounded tone, I just melt. I don't think she took any voice lessons, it was just a natural talent. This was the big breakthrough song for Sonny and Cher in 1965 that Sonny wrote , which led to the Cher we know all these years later as a solo artist. At this point, there was no idea of having their own variety show, most TV was in black and white, and it was a different universe. those of us who experienced the moment see it from a different perspective, we lived it, slowly, gradually, where today you are getting mere soundbites/video clips of what life was like back then. There were NO official "hippies" yet, not for about 2 years. It evolved, you cannot judge it from how you see them dressed here in 1965. Most entertainers and bands were still wearing suits, a few were breaking through with their own dress code. Exceptions were the Byrds and the Mamas and Papas- and Sonny and Cher, all from California at that time.
They also had a variety show in the 70s and they were absolutely hilarious. Even though they divorced they didn’t really show acrimony publicly. When Sonny died a few years ago Cher was devasted and delivered some very glowing comments at his funeral. Class act.
Sonny was the writer and producer of this song. He wrote and produced a lot of great songs for them. To me, his "I got flowers in the spring" was the most memorable line of the song.
This was THE song of my young years...just loved them...even though they divorced, Cher gave a very touching eulogy at his funeral...she knew what he had done for her, because for sure there would have been no Cher without Sonny.
This is what I consider an iconic song from the 1960s. Sonny and Cher were at the top of their game very early on in their careers, and this started it all. This never gets old, being a child of the 60s I still sing along
The year was 1965 and one of the biggest songs of the year was "I Got You Babe." Was on the hits chart for a long time and is still the first song that people think of when Sonny and Cher are mentioned. A very simple song with a catchy beat and a "cute" story. Glad you reacted to it. Keep on keepin' on... BCNU...
I loved the Sonny and Cher comedy hour that was on weekly in the seventies when I was a kid. It was great. They complimented each other. Everyone knew that Sonny had a great song writing ability, but Cher was the one with the winning voice. Once Cher started receiving most of the attention for her own music and her voice, it started a rift between the two. An eventual breakup was inevitable. We all know Cher went on to be a super star , and Sonny slowly drifted out of music and did some acting for a while , then got into politics. Sadly In 1998 Sonny died as the result of a skiing accident.
Sonny and Cher worked for Phil Spectre a famous record producer know for the "wall of sound". His sound is exemplified in songs like "Da Doo Ron Ron" by The Crystals. Be my Baby by the Ronettes, Sonny did not want to be a singer he was interested in producing but Cher was so shy in the beginning that Sony sang with her.
Another of their big hits from this same era was "The Beat Goes On." It's a must listen! Sonny wasn't known for his vocal quality and range, that's for sure. But I think he was the driver behind their success. And his personality was so charming and funny, that more than made up for his limited singing abilities. They had great chemistry. So much so, that they even had a TV show together AFTER they got divorced, and I believe they remained close friends until his death.
Bob Mackie designed her beautiful wardrobe for their tv show. They brought their adorable little daughter (who has now happily transitioned) out on stage to say goodnight - their humor & talent really lit up the screen & made you feel happy.
Yes I loved the Sonny and Cher show --- She really pushed the fashion limits ever week --- Sonnys eulogy Cher did was so heart felt and sincere -- they shared some great moments together and with us --- RIP Sonny
We used to watch the Sonny and Cher Show every week. They closed the show with this song and they always looked so in love. She idolized Sonny. I remember the first time they brought baby Chastity (now Chaz) out to sing it too her.
Sonny and Cher was the first concert I attended!! There was probably 100 people there!! You could literally walk up and touch them!!! They were really quiet funny! Thus the Sonny and Cher show!!
It's sometimes forgotten that Sonny was a very talented songwriter. He wrote I Got You Babe, The Beat Goes On, Bang Bang I Shot My Baby Down, Needles and Pins, and other hit songs. A genuinely talented guy.
I saw Sonny & Cher in concert in Nashville circa 1972! I was just a kid and my mom and grandmother took me to it. Their TV show was very popular at the time.
This was a great pick! Cher still does this song live with modern technology , Sonny is put up on big screen and they sing together again! It’s so sweet and touching! She still shows her love and appreciation for him by honoring him this way! Loved them!💕
Sonny and Cher, and The Mamas and the Papas were the start of the glorious hippy days around 1965 which ended with the Stones at Altamont in 1969. But what a wonderful five years it was. Peace and love so badly needed these days.
Love Sonny and Cher. Especially Cher she is one of the most iconic female artists of all time with one of the most unique voices ever. Love your channel, you guys react to some really great music and are really fun to watch and have such genuine reactions. Love you guys, wishing the best for you both.
One of my favorite singers is Cher, but I always watched Sonny and Cher, and they had many hits together. All I Ever Need is You,The Beat goes on, and Baby Don't Go, for example.
This was early in their career, Try to find some later from 'The Sonny and Cher' television show. All of Cher's clothes were made by the famous designer Bob Mackie, who also designed for Carol Burnette Show. Their show was an hour long variety show with comedic story episodes, guest entertainers, and of course, their own duets. It was a fabulous show.
This is going to segue into a reaction suggestion. Sonny and Cher’s tv show was great…they modeled their banter after what Louis Prima and his wife Keely Smith did in their live performances. Louis was called the “King of Swing”, and Keely’s singing voice was incredible. Louis started out in the 1930’s, and in early 1950’s you can hear how his music morphed into rock and roll. He also voiced King Louis in Disney’s “The Jungle Book”, and his band did the music for King Louis in that. Please react to Louis Prima “Jump Jive and Wail”. Then there is a cover of that song by the Brian Setzer Orchestra that was done in the 1990’s that’s also worth checking out.
I did not know that they based their banter on Louis & Keely. I adore Louis Prima & even visited his grave to sing "I Wanna Be Like You" from "The Jungle Book". Thanks for sharing this story!
One of the most touching moments of any concert is Cher singing this song at every concert she does with Sonny's voice recorded. I think she realized later in life just exactly how special of a man Sonny was.
Cher is timeless - Sonny & Cher have some good tunes - need to watch Their TV Show it was a good show with many other singers as guess star - Try Cher's The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)
She was my idol. She hung in my room. I love you, ms. Cher! My favorite is half-breed and they had a show on TV. She can sing anything, anytime and anywhere.
They were big hippy's back in the day and got their own TV show and sonny was the first! Also, she ended up out shinning him big time and went on her own!
The Beat Goes On is another great Sonny & Cher song, with one of my favorite all time bass players, the GOAT Carol Kaye furnishing that iconic bass line. A lot of people don't know that Sonny and Cher were also part of the legendary Wrecking Crew, the talented studio musicians who were Spector's Wall of Sound, and backed anybody who was anybody from the 50s to the 80s.
My late wife always associated this song with us. I know folks are probably tired of hearing about my late wife (53 years together) but these are songs that after 2 years I can just start to listen to again
In much later years, Sunny actually became the mayor of Palm Springs California. Palm Springs used to be the place where a lot of musical artists and movie stars used to go.
this has always been, and will always be, the sweetest song ever recorded. you should look for clips of them having Chaz (Chastity) on their show. so sweet!
Listening to this song with your partner means u get a big hug. We remember why we’re together despite the trials of life. If we get to far away from talking to each other I play this song, till I get a hug. Hugs start talking. Love u guys
As far as I’m concerned this is an iconic song from the 60s. My time for growing up… And Sonny and Cher or at the top of their game from the beginning. And this was their beginnings and it just kept getting better.
Thank you for doing this one. As one of the ones suggesting this, I am thrilled that you got to see one of the most iconic songs of the 60's. I agree with suggestions below to watch Cher's moving eulogy of Sonny. But I also I remember many years after they split, and they both appeared together on the same David Letterman Show in 1987, and he got them to sing I Got You Babe one more time. No longer together but still cared for each other, worth a watch.
In 1987 Sonny & Cher reunited on the Late Night with David Letterman talk show. Of course he asked them if they would perform their clasdic I Got You Babe. They did. They had not performed that song together in decades.
Watched the sonny and Cher show in the 70' s and this song was their closing song on their show along with their sweet pie daughter, Chassity, I loved Cher's long hair so much that I had to have the Cher doll
OH WOW it's just so weird seen Sonny without his mustache. The Sonny I remember was from their TV show years 1971 - 1977. The first time I ever saw Tina Turner was on their show. Even though I was only 4 or 5 I can remember it like it was yesterday. She did Proud Mary and her singing, dancing and dress made a powerful impression on me. She kinda scared me but I liked it. LOL
One of the best all time duet songs, in my humble opinion. 🙂 Their voices went together well, as different as they were. They were genuinely in love at the time, from what I heard, & yad genuine affection for each other. As others have said, she spoke so movingly of him at his funeral, showing that they still cared a lot about each other, even well after they broke up.
Sonny woke Cher up in the middle of the night to show her THIS song he had just written, because he had a gut feeling it would be a hit. Oh, yeah, it was a hit and then some. Still going strong after 50+ years on the radio.
They got together when Cher was still a teenager. Sonny was several years older than she was. He was producing records and she was very introverted and afraid of performing. Sonny was her strength when they started & he gave her the courage to start singing in front of audience.
Ta for writing this saved me a job ☺️

Sonny & Cher show was every Sunday night and it was awesome! Sonny was her husband, first, long before Almond, and Sonny was the brains behind Cher's success, there would be no Cher without Sonny Bono!
THE BEAT GOES ON is the best Sonny and Cher song imo. Definitely give it a watch
yes that is a good one. It and I got you Babe are sign posts of our generation along with any early Dylan.
YES!
Sonny and Cher had a very special relationship, even though their personal relationship fell apart, it was good to see that they were able to repair their friendship before Sonny's death. Cher often said that Sonny's was the catalyst that allowed her to overcome debilitating stage fright.
This was "our song" back in the 60's. We were married for 55 years. Thank you for this. My husband passed last year. I love this.
The Beat Goes On is another great Sonny and Cher classic!
Sonny was very emotional performing it, for sure.
Saw them on Letterman and it was magical!
I’ll have to look for that video. I bet it was very emotional😌
Here it is, I believe this was the last time they did the song together.....th-cam.com/video/c4EaFzRVjlM/w-d-xo.html
@@racerta2002 yes this was a rare and special performance probably two decades later
Class act.
I loved that show. I was mad at Cher for decades when it went off the air. (I was seven so cut me some slack)
That show was wildly popular, and they had many great guests on it.
Sonny and Cher are truly soul mates.
When I hear Cher sing " If I could turn back Time" I can't help but wonder if she's thinking about Sonny.
It's nice to know I'm not the only one who wonders that.
Another Sonny and Cher favorite was "A Cowboy's Work Is Never Done"
This is what I consider an iconic song from the 1960s. Sonny and Cher were at the top of their game very early on in their careers, and this started it all. This never gets old, being a child of the 60s I still sing along
She is amazing, one of the greatest singers of the 70s 80's 90s 00s 10s and 20s.....
She was married to Sonny originally, and they had Chastity (Chaz). She later married Greg Allman and had her second child Elijah Blue Allman
My favorite nose that Cher ever had!
BCNU...
You guys need to do or read about the singers or groups after you do them. Cher is 75. Sonny became a chef and then a politician.
Love Sonny. Nuf said.
The Sonny and Cher show was so fun.
When Sonny died, the tribute that Cher gave at his funeral brought me to tears.😥
Cher has one of the greatest voices of the rock era. Sonny sang.
Bob Mackie designed her beautiful wardrobe for their tv show. They brought their adorable little daughter (who has now happily transitioned) out on stage to say goodnight - their humor & talent really lit up the screen & made you feel happy.
The only reason my dad tuned in every week to watch the show was to see what skimpy outfit (for the time) Cher was wearing. :)
And their now son, Chaz, has recently been working as an actor in things like American Horror Story in addition to having written three books.
@@sadfaery AND he has been an activist for LGBTQ+ causes, with his mother working alongside him.
Yes, Chastity "transed the gay away". Many LGB find this a very sad trend.
I remember sonny and cher on the French TV I was so young !!! I got you babe
I used to love to watch their weekly TV show. They were married from 1964 until 1975, Thanks!
Yes I loved the Sonny and Cher show --- She really pushed the fashion limits ever week --- Sonnys eulogy Cher did was so heart felt and sincere -- they shared some great moments together and with us --- RIP Sonny
Watch them sing this on the David Letterman Show shortly before Sonny died. It's so special.
Yes please!!
They were the sweetest couple and she loved him and her loved her .
I LOVED this song my entire life. As a child, I loved their comedy TV show.
"The Beat Goes On" is another great one by them.
Sonny was the brains and lots of personality, but Cher had the talent.
They closed every episode of their TV series with this song.
I’m British and can remember wartching this performance on Top Of The Pops I was 13yrs old I loved the record and bought it
Sonny and Cher weren't just singing together. They were marrried, and they were huge back in the day. Had their own hit TV variety show.
Such a classic !!!!
Love Sonny and Cher
You guys are ALWAYS honest in your reactions- but THIS song, really made you both happy! It's heart-warming to watch...
I grew up watching the sonny and Cher show. Still makes me smile and lol
Absolutely crazy about Keely Smith’s voice. Pure, pure, pure.
Omg, Brian Setzer another interesting reaction choice;. Stray Cats
Cher is my favorite Cougar!
Sonny was Cher’s first Husband. Sonny & Cher was a big show to watch. Loved it! ❤❤
Sonny Bono “discovered” Cher. They were married and sang together for many years.
It was a beautiful anthem - so sincere - and different at the time - we were all besotted X
In much later years, Sunny actually became the mayor of Palm Springs California. Palm Springs used to be the place where a lot of musical artists and movie stars used to go.
That's *Sonny.* But yeah, "Sunny" works too, as Palm Springs is certainly that. Lol
He was also a member of the House of representatives!
I saw Sonny & Cher in concert in the early 70’s. I wasn’t even 10 yrs old yet. It was my very first concert. ✊
this has always been, and will always be, the sweetest song ever recorded. you should look for clips of them having Chaz (Chastity) on their show. so sweet!
I loved it as a kid and I was so jealous of Chastity for being onstage with them!
Give a listen to Gordon Lightfoot's "Beautiful' sweeter than honey
Chaz turned out to be a profound example of what Hollywood can do to a kid.
They had a weekly program in the 70s we watched it as kids sketches and singing
This is the Sonny and Cher I remember well. I was a teenager and so in love with Cher!
Their voices went together well, as different as they were.
Still going strong after 50+ years on the radio.
sonny bono a great artist and a great song writer
