The phrase "to jump the shark" comes from an episode of Happy Days when a water skiing Fonz (still wearing his leather jacket) jumped over a shark. The phrase means when a show has run out of ideas and comes up with a ridiculous, over the top and unbelievable story. Henry Winkler was a good water skier and actually did the water skiing in the scene except for the jump itself for safety reasons. Search for the scene and you will find it here on YT.

I am glad Ron Howard said No when after 2 seasons they asked him if they could change the title, and consequently the direction of the show, to "The Fonz's Happy Days". I like the character of Fonzarelli, but the show works great as an ensemble. It would have been sad to see it turning into 'The Urkel Show' or 'The JJ Evans show', who both ruined their respective show.

@@original.dwornboy Let me elaborate. George Lucas saw the pilot of Happy Days which had not yet been picked up, which reflected very much his own youth experiences (cruising, hot rods) and cast Ron Howard in the Steve Bolander role in American Graffiti. So I’m afraid YOU’RE wrong, they are intrinsically connected. Happy Days went on to be made as a series.
