Of all my kayaks, my favorite for surfing the unique, tightly spaced waves of the Great Lakes is the Liquid Logic Remix XP10. I explain why and show safety modifications I made.
Nice video! I just got the Liquid Logic Marvel 10. I am a beginner but after seeing you on lake MI with a shorter kayak really excites me. Hopefully I can find a spray skirt that fits mine. Right now I am just going on our local river getting use to the kayak, and looking at the different mods to do.
Curious about your height and weight. I’m looking to decide between the XP9 and XP10, but I’m 6’4 175lb, which on paper means I should get the 9. Also considering the Katana. Did you look at any other crossovers when you picked up the Remix?
I'm 6'1" and 190 lbs. The deciding factor for you maybe your foot size. The XP10 has plenty of foot room. Can you find a retailer where you can try both models?
I’ve got the XP9 in the same color, 10th Anniversary edition (2011) as well. Love the boat. Great video and great group (TRR). Happy and healthy paddling!
I have the xp10 as well. I love my boat, except the standard foot pegs. I was thinking about buying the white water bulkhead kit that replaces the standard foot pegs. I keep a float bag behind the seat. Should I get a float bag for the bow as well, and put it in front of the bulkhead?
Steve, yes I recommend putting a float bag or bags in front of the foot pegs or bulkhead. This will balance the buoyancy so the kayak floats horizontally, making it possible to re-enter and roll or pump out and re-enter. I don't use a float bag behind the seat because of the watertight (well, mostly) compartment in the rear.
Great video, Ken! I think you are right to use a shorter boat on the Great Lakes because the waves are so tight together. With longer boats you get caught between waves.
Interesting, thanks for posting. I went to a Lake MI kayak surfing class and they use longer boats, in the 14’ -16’ range, Dagger Stratos and P&H Delphin for ex, lots of rocker and a retractable skeg.
Boats you mention can work for surfing. I think people favor them because of the safety factor -- they have fore and aft flotation for self-rescues. That's why I added float bags and deck lines to my XP. How did those other boats work for you? Were you able to catch long rides? Personally I find shorter boats provide better performance in the waves. They're easier to maneuver without getting pushed sideways by the wave.

Sounds good, Mike. I recommend having a solid roll before trying this, and don't go out alone.
100% agree about firm deck lines - much safer. Great safety tips!

Hello, I would like to know what size to fit well on the xp10 lucky charm skirt Xl?
The IR Lucky Charm skirt that fits well on the XP10 kayak is an XXL deck size.

Has anyone tried the Dagger Kaos for wave surfing on the Great Lakes? I like the simplicity of a sit-on-top.
I haven't tried one but I would like to.
Would never think about this boat. Hard to keep the skirt on? Had trouble on small moving rivers
In my experience, the Lucky Charm XXL stays put.

I agree. Shorter boats are good for park-n-play surfing on the Great Lakes. I do recommend outfitting with float bags and grab lines.
