I have a question about today’s exam and I’m wondering if you can help me? I realised afterwards that I only quoted the Item twice in my entire 30 marker and that was in the introduction. I’m really worried this will affect the mark I get for application. Do marks for application come from just the Item or is it your own knowledge that you apply also? How much difference do you think it’ll make to my mark since I have applied the item but only twice at the very start. Thanks! :)
Application marks come in a range of ways. One, application from the item (and then you apply your knowledge). Secondly, how you apply to the question. E.g. Usually a question is asking about the differences in educational achievement. This in itself is vague. So if you said 'this factor causes this student TO FAIL.... or this causes educational SUCCESS. Being really clear about what the impact is = application to achievement. You can also get application marks for being specific to the social group that is being asked. E.g. in 2017 about class. Being specific about working class students OR middle class students.... Applying examples would also get you marks. :-)
TheTEACHERSOCIOLOGY Thank you so much for replying I can only imagine how busy you must be! In response to what you said about being specific about middle class or working class, could this work with ethnicity in the same way? For example, mentioning specific ethnic groups and then explaining how different factors could cause them to achieve/underachieve?
when structuring an essay (e.g. a 30 marker and it was on functionalism ed achievement) oobviously I would state their view on it an the evaluate with stuff like Marxism views, but could I do 4 paragraphs on functionalist (still evaluating) but then 1 paragraph on Marxists view and the eval?. (just an example)
I though it was not too bad. You just have to put yourself in working class parents shoes and what they think of education. So for instance there may be a lack of representativeness due to which area the researcher chooses to study in (whether it be working class or middle class)
Good luck everyone! I shall be lowering the grade boundries!
Good luck to everyone sitting the exam tomorrow!
Super useful! This was good to make me feel fully prepared, along with a good cup of tea! :)

HI, In the college I work at the exams start at 9.30. Please check with your school/college! :-)
Is it true you don’t need to say sociologists name? Like “a sociologist has argued that...”
How did everyone's exam go? The MIC question was horrible, I almost died.
