    The car feeling like it's 1970 isn't too far off the mark. The Eagle itself was based on the Concord which was based on the Hornet which came out in 1970...so the platform was 17 years old by 1987 so even by 80s standards it was pretty dated. Still, a cool car and concept that predated the SUV by a number of years.

    My great grandfather had a wagon version of this car, a 1984 AMC Eagle. It had the 258 cubic inch 4.2 6-cylinder engine, same as in the earlier Jeeps. It was also a 3-speed automatic. I remembered riding in one as a kid. Last of these were in 1988 just after Chrysler bought out AMC.

  • @rockymountainjazzfan1822
    @rockymountainjazzfan1822 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The AMC Eagle concept was way ahead of its time. I almost bought one in the 1980's. AMC was on its death bed, though. The Eagle was basically a 1970's Hornet on which AMC grafted a single speed transfer case with full-time 4WD or 2WD selections, and independent front suspension, and the old-fashioned carbureted 258 CID straight six. By 1987, AMC had come out with the much more powerful and refined 4.0 multi-port injected 4.0L straight six for the Jeep Cherokee and Comanche pickup , but it never made it into the Eagle. So, the Eagle was a very innovative car for its time that was cobbled together from the parts shelf because of AMC's horrible financial condition. That's why it was never a big seller. Great snow car, though.

  • @XA351GT
    @XA351GT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The funny thing is when you said it's 1987 but it feels like the 70s that's because that body design dates back to the early 70s as the Hornet. in 1978 they changed the name to Concord and then when it went 4WD it became the Eagle. So you were pretty much driving a 25 YO design. I'm glad you mentioned Subaru. It showed again that AMC was ahead of it's time.

    Wow, brought back memories, I had a 1980 AMC EAGLE STATION WAGON 4X4 with the wooden panels. That was my First car at 17 years old in 1993 in Paterson NJ. The kids made fun of me for having such a Vehicle, I stuck my middle finger at them as I drove it while they walked. Huge problem I had with it was it wouldn’t take reverse until it warmed up, depends how cold it was it could have taken 15-30 minutes to warm up then a big boom &!it would reverse. As an impatient kid I would be reving that engine, if not I would have to get out of car with friends & push car backwards to get out of parking spot. Never figured out that problem. It was a great car, until I was making a left at a intersection & a brand new Hyundai scoup speeding hit me on my right quarter panel & spun me around and at that time I didn’t wore a seatbelt and landed on the passenger side. Hyundai Scoup TOTALED! I drove my Eagle home, As per my Pops not worth the fix, sold it for parts. Thanks again for the video.

  • @tuanh_duong
    @tuanh_duong 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are right that it feels like it is from the 70s. The Eagle dates back originally to the Hornet, a compact car that was one of the best sellers for the company. Then, they somehow managed to spruce it up a bit and sold it as the Concord, a compact luxury car in the late 70s to early 80s. Finally, in its final incarnation was the Eagle. AMC also made a hatchback version of this called the SX4 and a Kammback till '83, I believe, which is even rarer. But a good number of these sold were either the wagon or, as shown here, the sedan. Man, do I want one of these :D

    these were the foundation of the very popular Cherokee ... the rumor is, AMC was doing an engine collaboration with VW/Audi for their 4-cylinder cars. They saw the development of Quattro and beat Audi to the market with an AWD sedan, coupe and wagon. My friend's dad had the wagon ... I noticed that in the mid-80s, many of the local well-to-do families drove an Eagle.

      I know why: the EPA actually classified the Eagles, weirdly, as light trucks, so they were technically exempt. Trucks weren't required to have them until 1994, so that's why you don't see any Eagles with the third brake light.

    I love watching this as he realizes why people were upset when AMC went away. They made nice cars, just couldn't afford to do it.

    Back in 1971, I bought a 1971 Gremlin. I finally put Traction Action Junior traction bars on it to help stop the rubber burning. Didn't work. Finally traded it in for new orange 600 cc Honda sport coupe.

    It feels like a 70's vehicle due to the fact it came out in the Fall of 1979. If you were not there, you would not understand.

    AMC Eagles did not have EFI.They all had a computer controlled 2 bbl Carter carburetor,and yes they were AWD.They had a center differential and no low range.2wd just disconnected the front drive for better fuel economy.The 1st year models(1980) had no 2wd switch.

    My dad had a 87 AMC Concord DL. Growing up in upstate NY, I would occasionally remind my dad that he should have bought the Eagle.

    If memory serves, i think 1975 was the 1st Subaru 4wd wagon. I had a 1977 4wd with baja woody trim. It was a strange beast.

    Haha, OMG, this brings me back. Lol .... My mom had the 1980 AMC Eagle limited wagon. It was definitely nice having 4wd in the snow but it was so gutless in power at Tahoe altitude. ... and yeah, don’t get me started on how “over powered” the power steering and powered brake pedal was... to the point that there was no weight or feedback in either at all! It was the worst car to learn to drive in. Lol

    The AMC Eagle wasn't ready in the 1980's. It needed time to age like whisky or bourbon.

    I think you hit the nail on the head, you'd have to be someone who is objectively practical to buy this, and not care much about image or brand name to buy this, which isn't the average person lol
