  • John Anderson rides Terrific in the 2011 $175,000 Nexen Derby at the Spruce Meadows National in Calgary on June 12th. Although the end result wasn't what was hoped for, John rode with the RMSJ TV Helmet Camera, and shares the radical view from the saddle of this demanding event with all of the natural obstacles.

    My favorite thing? Hearing how hard the rider is breathing. I try to explain that riding isn't just sitting there and hanging out. Its a WORKOUT!! 😁 Great video. Love all the treats he's getting at the beginning haha. And people think we abuse and toture horses. Big babies is what they are lol

      Alix King agree a 100% people abuse horses and I thinks it’s cruel I ride a 29 yr old appaloosa and I never abuse him I heard him breathing so hard so I cooled him down so he can get his heart rate back to normal then that was it and he’s still a good horse

    I hate it when people say “riding isn’t a sport” and “it’s so easy.”
    Threw my years of riding I have experienced refusals, my horse bucking, my horses going completely ballistic and much more. But not ONCE have I fallen off while jumping. (Which still shocks me today even though I have been riding for almost 7 years) Riding is one of the most dangerous sports out there. When parents go sign there kids up for riding they think “oh, riding is safe my kids will be fine,” but no. Each year over 7million people die from riding horses in the United States. It’s crazy how many people believe that riding is safe.
    You had a great ride!! 👌🏼👍🏼👌🏼👍🏼👌🏼

    We really should make every person who complains that we only "sit on the horse and do nothing" go a round or two in trot and canter...

    I don't jump but... if you just sit there and your horse misses a stride, your going to fall back, then get thrown forward once the horse lands.

    • @butterwutterscup
      @butterwutterscup 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, also depends on your balances ability. Jumping is very dangerous but when your trained enough it won’t be a large problem with strides. Strides are very important yes, but you can fix them quickly long as your counting. Strides are very easy to speed up or slow down. I have gotten thrown because of strides, but that was also when I started jumping.

    you should work on having a better connection and communication with your horse by speaking to him more to encourage him, Ive found my pony performs a lot better when i talk to him. Teamwork makes the dream work 🤷🏼‍♀️

      Adele May with these courses, you don't have time. Your constantly thinking about where to go, your position, how fast you need to go, etc. This isn't some silly Hunter course that goes slow and takes forever. You don't have all the time in the world to talk to your horse every 5 seconds like you do in hunters.

      Kht North i tend to think out loud to my pony, so even if i’m talking about what i need to do or where we need to go he can hear me. My instructor always praises me on it, i find personally it works very well for me. My pony can be a little crazy but it really helps him to concentrate and most the time stops silliness

      Adele May Sometimes it does work. I only find that when I have to use my voice, it should only be necessary. Im
      About to move up into jumpers, and trust me, they go fast, and over high jumps, so you can't find the right time to talk to your horse. Only at home I really ever talk to my horse.
