To spend some quality time with my beloved, newly adopted dog, Seymour, I bought a giant bike basket in an attempt to ride my bike with him. After weeks of careful training and patience, Seymour was finally ready to ride a bike with me. Until he wasn't. Biking with my dog was a mistake.

Yeah understand how people can be so stupid not figure that out. It especially BOILS my blood when I see idiots trying to get their dog to run along side them when they ride a bike but the dog wants to pull and starts to choke it itself. Then in great idiot fashion those same people will go out on a walk with their dog attached to a harness. Then wonder why their dog is pulling.
I admire that you made such a mistake and published this video so that other people can analyze your mistakes and learn from them. Thank you, you’ve probably prevented this from happening to someone else (me) and their pet
One thing I regret to this day is I never took my dog with me on a bike ride. (Eli, my 8yr old Pomeranian died last November) She always hates it when I leave, she knows when I'm leaving because I always commute by bike & her fuzzy face is always the 1st thing that welcomes me home. Sadly I will never get to experience that again. Sorry for the feels train & thank you for this video.
I lost my cat about a month ago. He was really healthy and active right to the end, and this summer I just happened to take him on his first bike ride. He rode in a sling around my chest. We did it about a dozen times before he started getting sick and I think he really did love it! When I lost him, I felt so much relief that he got to experience that.

Dude this dog isn't lazy.... It's honestly probably petrified....idk how's this isn't obvious 😞 he's a rescue, look at all the clips of him and his body positioning and reactions to things. You really need to get some dog training in with him mate. You seem pretty Keen so do it right and get some lessons with him with an approved dog trainer in your area. You'd be surprised how worth it could be with some effort to look at first identifying the body language in a dog. 🙏🏾
It seemed he actually fell off the basket, Glad he was not hurt! There are a few channels of owner that go bike packing with their dogs, checK them out for tips!
You could also look into those doggy backpacks to take him on rides, but have him more securely strapped in
One of my friends actually got one of those specifically to ride bikes with her corgi, coincidentally
I doubt this is more secure. Imagine falling on your back.
Those backpacks are good for cats too.
Those backpacks are awful for dogs joints. It’s okay for a 10-20 minute ride, but the position they use is terrible for their joints.
There really isn’t a good method of bringing your dog with you on your bicycle, if they weigh more than 20lbs or so.
Cats are perfect for those backpack things.
Get that dog on some hikes, go camping, develop a good bond and keep him tired, eventually he'll follow you everywhere with no need to train him because he'll trust you. You're doing good though, keep it up!

Also, take him on shorter trips whenever you're okay with just walking.
Have you looked into the Buddy Rider? It's like a car seat for dogs. Very secure. I'm not 100% sure if your dog would fit, weight wise, but something else to consider.

Reasonably dangerous
Really just depends on your dog's temperament. I've ridden with my mini aussie in the exact same wald basket and he loves it.
My tip is to get a harness but also make the dog feel like hes in control, that means find a place where he can hop into the basket himself without you having to lift him in.
I’ve got an 90 lb Bullmastiff. Energetic and STRONG as hell. I tried to have him run along side me as I rode and held his harness leash like I see people do.... that was a serious mistake.
Can you get a harness that secures him to the basket . I think it may be safer for you both.. glad he wasn't hurt.
Harness is a great idea on or off the bike.
Definitely a harness, attached to the basket with a very short very secure leash. Make it so the dog can move around but physically cannot leave the basket.
Seymour is adorable! I'm amazed he did as well as he did in the basket! Our pups leap out of our trailer the moment it starts moving. Good boooy. I think he'll get there eventually 🐶

Well, looked like he fell out more than jumped out, ijs. But Seymour is a rescue and he could have had some kind of traumatic experience with another dog in his past. He seems to suffer from some anxiety, and I think once you’ve had him longer and he grows even closer to you, he will be easier to train

That was fun. Very impressed with how patient you were in trying to get Seymour use to the basket.
Those bars were probably the wrong choice. Their design allows the basket more leverage in pulling the bars with shifting weight. They also put the basket forward a bit more shifting gravity forward making it even worse. Otherwise long bars are a good idea and I think if you just let Seymour get his sea legs turning in the basket it wont be too much of a problem hauling him along. Gets easier each time.

Even a small enclosed dog "crate" that you attach to a front rack would be ideal. It makes them feel like their in a den and of course will keep him(and you!) really protected. Theres some really light weight ones out their for carrying that I believe are made out of plastic and nylon. Good luck! ✌💛 Or just "MacGyver" another basket over top the one you have with simple hinges. That say you can still see him on camera!
Harness, towel or blanket in bottom of basket - but not yet. Need a few months to slow down, learn about your dog, walks, hikes, chilling together. They are sensitive to voice and Very aware of your mood, includin* any disdain , so it’s about watching, and tuning in. Forget about performance to outside standards. Beautiful pup. Cherish every moment!

Dogs are actually kinda robust, my dog once fell from a balcony and she did not even seem bothered and the vet checked her and everything was fine

At the end of the the day man , just do what`s good for the dog . I`m glad neither one of ya got hurt . Teach or train your dog to stay calm in the basket at a park or somewhere safe till he gets used to it . Lower the basket to one on a front rack and he`ll feel more comfortable and with a harness he`ll be easier to control for a safe ride for both.
Good recovery! Be interesting what you do for a solution. I like the ideas suggested for harnesses. Also, a cage may help for a time. Stop him jumping or "falling" out.

If there is substantial load on the handlebar or fork the geometry needs to be changed to less wheel flop in order to have similar handling.

Man, I never realized that my weekly groceries were so heavy... I sometimes carry 40-50 lbs of food back home with me on my front rack.
Bad idea, but good thing you tried for others, and seymour didn't get hurt. :)
Those baskets can't handle more than 10kg, actually closer to 5kg tops. They rest on your wheel skewer, which sure isn't designed to resist more weight applied laterally so close to the axle. That, also was a very bad idea. And, of course, little dog = big stress reactions (when they are stressed). And, as you said, cranks & spokes could have made this quite bad.
The whole training part was adorable :)
Baskets in general make the handling of a bike awful and should be the last place you add weight. However, this particular basket can hold over 100lbs as long as you have ways to make it so you can safely can handle it - which may include having a friend hold the rear down while you both walk the bike! The thing itself is 8lbs of welded steel. It isn't "resting on the skewer" it's clamped to the dropout. The skewer takes no load, the fork and handlebars do.
You might need another size basket, where he feels safer😉

I used to canoe with my German Shepherd . There was a learning curve with a high energy dog and and interest in deer and other wildlife!

Hmmm, sounds like a brake would be handy so if he DOES fall out, he doesn't get caught in the moving parts, the momentum looks too much to rely on experience

I have a dog specific basket for my 2 dachshunds and it has a seatbelt attached to it so they can’t jump out also brave riding breakless with the dog!!
I have a Wald basket like that on one of my bicycles, and it makes the steering very heavy, as I'm sure you discovered. It would be best to mount a basket on the back of the bike, instead. I have bikes with large baskets mounted on the back; and I carry heavy groceries with no trouble. Put him on a very short leash or rope, so he can't get out of the basket. Caution: He could opt to hang himself with said short rope, jumping out of the basket, if it turns out he doesn't like cycling. Lastly, be very careful with a heavy loaded front basket because if you hit something like a 2x4 in the road, for example, the bike will flip forward, as the bike is front heavy. Ask me how I know?? Yep, that happened to me....a freaking 2x4 in the road, in the evening when visibility was bad.
Yep a front, high load is the absolute worst on a bike and the last place you should be adding weight. The general guideline is keep the center of gravity of the bike low and either centered or rearwards. High loads make the bike tippy. I carried a full toolbox on top of a rear rack once without adding ballast in panniers - that was NOT fun, but at least I wasn't at risk of going OTB due to it.
Tangent: Today's fixies have track bike DNA, while the style of antique bike (even if fixed or single speed) that a lot of "hipster style" seems to ape off of has cruisers as its "Grandchildren" - a bike that rear-heavy and slack wouldn't be as affected by a front load.

I put my dog on a rear bike basket. The rear shock absorbs better. And i strap her in to the 4 corners with her harness so she cant jump out in any direction and my hands are free
A basket is the absolute worst place to put a heavy load for all the reasons Zach demonstrated. 30lbs in the rear is no big deal, but 30lbs up front is a nightmare of handling and OTB risk. Not even counting the weight of the basket (which is steel.)

My dog is a 30 kg border collie, he is too big to ride my bike. But he is fast enough and well trained enough to run next to me. I can't even imagine putting him in a basket he would just want to jump out and run along with me.
Cool. When he gets older a trailer might be good. I use an ebike to carry loads and an 8kg dog sometimes in my trailer.
@@jonyfany8763 yeah he is only 4 years old at the minute. So he easily able to keep up. I usually cycle slow ish when I am with him. But yeah a trailer for when he is old is defo the way.

Check out fellow fixed gear rider and dog owner Matt Reyes' channel. He rides with his dog Ernie in a bunch of videos in an enclosed bag on the front or in a backpack. Also with eye protection.
I live in Calgary Canada and ride with my dog in a basket on the front of my bike. She loves it and yes we have a few hairy moments with other dogs but for the most part she loves it. I should mention she is 15 - 20 pounds. I also took it one level more and have her registered as my ptsd service dog, which she is great for.
The problem with other dogs comes from being attacked a couple of times. So we are working on it with her.
Get a second dog and a second basket in the rear to keep the center of mass in the right place for good handling.

Deeper basket. Maybe hook his collar to the basket for security. Until he understands he’s in a moving vehicle and won’t jump out, then U don’t need a hook
He definitely didn't jump out of the basket, he fell out. And he's fine. He looked like he was just trying to turn around to look, but the leash was too short and the bike wobbling at the same time and just fell out.
I think you will be able to ride with him with little bit of experience with it (trial and error). He really looked like he was enjoying it.

You should build a front-loading cargo fixie or get a bike trailer so that Seymour wouldn't fall so far the next time he decides to bail out.
not exactly fixie style but if you have a 1-1/8th headtube frame you should get a Clydesdale to put him on. lower should handle better and probably feel more secure for him too.
I think he did pretty good, actually. After he fell from the basket, he seems to have learned his lesson. That's how most people are, too. They have to learn the hard way. I think you'll have him cycling in no time. Just be careful, as I said in my previous post; the bike is very front heavy, and you can flip very easily, even on speed humps, if you're not careful.

I bought a large carrier for my dog so he can't jump out. He's a small chihuahua though.

Maybe a cargo style bike would be a good bet. With a smaller front wheel he'd be much lower and the ride would be less twitchy. Gears aren't quite be in your lane but this way you can ride to the fun dog walks. And have a much bigger basket for him. I'm thinking that a nice 8kg bike with snappy lively handling doesn't quite match with 13kg on the front end. 😂

At 30 lbs let the dog run along side you leashed, he'll burn energy and may be less focused on other dogs, just a thought. Your dog seems more bored than lazy though, especially if he can summon the energy to lash out at other dogs, he may be more of a runner than a sitter.

Using an open basket for a dog on a bike is a bad idea. Get one which is enclosed by metal bars on top. A dog should not be able to jump/fall out.

I've seen dogs jump out of moving cars. Don't underestimate their single-mindedness.
Get an ebike it's stronger and more stable and sturdy. l ride my dog in an enclosed basket where she can look out the window while being safely buckled in.
You're fortunate the dog wasn't badly injured by the spokes.

I normally love your videos, but please don't put your dog in the basket again. It's obviously not safe for him. Consider using one of the other great suggestions from the commenters that will keep him safe and sound.
