I had a book as a child entitled Early Man. In it was a chapter on Flint Knapping. It was a short chapter that had great pictures but that was it... For decades nothing else came to light on the subject. Then I somehow discovered your site and the world has opened up again and it is so much more insightful. Thank you for all your amazing videos Mr. Lord

If only everyone was as forthcoming as you about sharing knowledge, we would have no Intellectual Property laws and we would all be much further ahead without the the need to keep inventing the wheel. I can't say I mind being left behind in the stone age though. Brilliant skills, putting us back in touch with our ancestors in for me what is a fascinating time in our history. Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you showed the snapped flint spearhead as that is always happening to me when I try to make something from a piece of flint. Even legends snap their flint from time to time.
Love the knowledge and skills displayed, but oooh man, am I jealous of the rock you have access to. I happen to live in a lithic poor area of the US, so good stone is about 5 hours drive away. My limited time off work doesn't allow over night trips, so I have to buy my material blind. So far the only place that actually sent me what I ordered stopped selling. The others have sent trash. This fall I plan a week long trip to Oregon for some obsidian, but for now I am watching a ton of other people playing with rocks.
I tried flint knapping, and it is insanely difficult.
I guess you need years to fully master this art.

I have quite a big piece of flint and have been trying to nap it unsuccessfully. Watching your video has helped me see where I was gi=oing wrong. So thank you and back to the drawing board.
I've learned much from you and i thank you greatly for it. 2 things
one, you won't grow a new eye if you loose yours.
two, I'd love to see the moment the point broke and what caused it.
I'm new to napping. finally getting decent arrow points from jasper and chert (Pennsylvania USA). I always wear my safety glassses. 15yrs as a welder. Even with them on I've had steel drilled from my eyes.

brilliant video, i'm obsessed with flint and am going to have a go at this (i'll be wearing goggles because i'm not as patient) :)
First time I hade a perfect arrowhead and I hit it one more time and I got two pieces with that “s” shaped break in it I’m sure that if you looked up crestfallen in the dictionary I could have supplied the picture to go under the definition but I’ve also broken a few self bows that yielded a flurry of curse words too. Really something the way you have such a great attitude about it and really something that I got more words in this text than you got in five fine videos.

Broken and bloody. I live in an area where flint doesn't exist and only rare places of some form or chert and very poor quality of quartz and some nasty rhyolite. I almost drool over the flakes coming off. fun video.

when you hit the flint softly on the edges with the quartzite, is that to take the tension out of the flint?
Its to organise the shape of the edge so I can dictate a better flake removal

Is that split even a problem? if you're making a spear head you'd want one end to be flat so it doesnt go back into the stick

A long time ago one of the prettiest points was shaping up and I got an s shaped break right in two boy was I crestfallen years later someone showed me some of the tricks. On another note I saw a jade blade in the Innupiat Heritage Center in Barrow Alaska that came out of a whale in I think the 1980’s and it sparked the question how old are whales because it had been about 150 years since that type of equipment had been used. They were butchering the whale and it came from the blubber encapsulated. It looked a lot like a blade shaped almost like a heart I saw you make in another vid. I got a hold of some Canadian jade in the Yukon Territory and discovered that whatever kind of jadite I had although I could feel the silica in, it it was so hard I could barely scratch it. I put it under a open fire pit and that didn’t work either in softening it. Any how have you ever heard of knapping jade?
oh man i wish i had flint so i could start to learn knapping. I dont think there is any naturally in finland.

There is flint in Skåne in the southern tip of Sweden.

Flint flint, not chert. Flint most likely from Norfolk, England.
