Two of my daughters joined the Coast Guard, one search and rescue, the other a nurse. I am so proud of them. I served twenty years in the Army, my husband served ten years.

Was your daughter a nurse before joining or did the coast guard train her to become a nurse? Just wondering as I was thinking about joining the coast guard and think nursing would be a great path.

USCG is way underrated and underappreciated. They are literally in the business of saving lives first. They're not apart of the Department of Defense yet are a branch of our military. They make up our armed forces yet are also classified as a law enforcement agency and keep our coastal borders safe. They are the only agency capable of enforcing federal laws, maritime laws, and international laws. They have full arrest powers and police authority yet they primarily focus on life saving missions & search/rescue. I mean how badass is all of that? How do more people not grow up wanting to do such an amazing career? I honestly wish I knew all this as a kid because I would have been obsessed lol. Very much respect the men and women of our US Coast Guard and all they do for us.

Living in Sitka, mid-winter, lying in bed late at night, pitch dark and blowing like hell I hear the CG helicopter take to the air. I lived across Sitka Sound from USCG Air Station Sitka and more than once we heard the helicopters take off on a mission. I have nothing but admiration for their service. Well done.

I was in the USCG from LA to about the Canadian border and from Boston to the Canadian border. We came across dead people sometimes. So when we were able to rescue people that were still alive we were totally psyched. It makes you feel so good inside to know you saved another human being. We'd all be high-fiving and grinning from ear to ear. That feeling stays with you for a long time.

I love it when one of the crew grabs a Rand McNally Road Map of Alaska! Very high tech! Don't ever give up your paper maps. Also, it isn't lost on me what first-class equipment we tax payers provide to the Coast Guard, often times so we can spend thousands of dollars rescuing people who choose to needlessly endanger themselves. I don't gripe about finding lost hunters, but some of these rescues are necessary when they should not be. All that said, "Semper Paratus!" Good on ya', men!

Typically that's more of a gulf of mexico area, and great lakes region where people tend to be extremely stupid. Alaska I feel like the people know that nature is no joke and can turn on them any second

I knew a former CG. He was stationed somewhere up north around the border of Canada. He said he got out because he was tired of finding deceased people all the time (it was a body of water people usually ventured too far out on the ice). This show touches on that fact. Sometimes, no matter what is done, you just cant save them all. He said even if you save 99 of the 100 people in a rescue mission that you still feel like you failed.

Unreal story. Pretty heartbreaking and amazing at the same time, I would LOVE to see this story about these two hunters be made into a movie.
It would be a great way to honour the work these CG guys did, to honour the life of the hunter that passed, and celebrate the one that survived.
