  • Professor, computer scientist and author, Allen Downey, discusses his book “Probably Overthinking It: How to Use Data to Answer Questions, Avoid Statistical Traps, and Make Better Decisions,” an essential guide to the ways data can improve decision making.
By using data visualizations instead of equations, he builds understanding from the basics to help you recognize errors, whether in your own thinking or in media reports. Even if you have never studied statistics-or if you have and forgot everything you learned-this book will offer new insight into the methods and measurements that help us understand the world.

In the first class of my stats intro class, the instructor made it clear that there’s no easy way to achieve “randomness” in sampling. And in later classes, it’s a recurring theme of George Box’s quotes: all models are wrong but some are useful. Stats folks know our limits. And that’s the beauty of it. Keep us humble and watchful and probably overthinking a lot.

Thanks. The word paradox in new to me with respect to statistical data inferences. In any class room one will find the students of SAME age group and as such only three or four percent will be obese or overweight. How sufficient numbers for analysis will be obtainable is a question. If ALTERED the experiment to collect from a city's population then bias of age will enter without knowing. Thanks

Not evil, just cynical because of persistent patterns of consumer behavior (I don't judge them, if you get to see what I see you'd become cynical too).

If you'd moderate facebook reported content you'd become cynical, as well.

Google is by far the best open source driven by honesty and integrity, in my opinion.
