- Tori Amos performing "Father Lucifer" live on David Letterman in 1996, with a bit of the "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield in the last part of the song.

Most people go on talk shows and they’ll play a song that’s “audience friendly” but then there’s someone like Tori Amos who will take you somewhere unexpected and completely blow your mind and leave you speechless.
i about lost my MIND when she started tubular bells 😱 tori, you GENIUS ❤
This will always be my absolute favorite performance of this song!
I didn't love what she did with the bridge here though.
same!!
When you compare this to modern chart 'music' you really see how far we've fallen, especially when it comes to live TV performances. No autotune, no vulgarity just absolute pure talent.
😂😂😂@@paulgilliatt7829
cant believe she invented the piano... herstory
😂
Still Amazing!!!
I remember this the night it aired, I pushed record on the vhs and sat back in awe. Everyone else lives on earth, Tori just visits to give the world amazing songs.
This is actually better than the studio version. She's amazing live
Love it. It’s Father Lucifer, but also a nod the The Exorcist and Bronski Beat. So so so good!!!
Happy 61st birthday to the goddess Tori! ♥
She's so crazy...in a really cool way ❤
2:30 Theme from The Exorcist (Tubular Bells)
I'd forgotten how good this performance was. Just magical!
so many times she makes me say "ok, now she's just showing off" 😍🤩
She’s stunning here
They gave her a horribly out-of-tune piano, but she burned it to the ground! Phenomenal performance ❤
This song has a “prepared piano” where the sound is temporarily altered with objects in the strings. I originally thought it was tuned differently like one would a guitar but it is totally different. The changed piano sound is desired to add specific quality to songs. She does crush it on anything she plays.
Like she would go onstage without a sound-check first 😂
I just cannot get over how beautiful she looks here
Enlightened ❤
This must be the day Kevyn Aucoin did her makeup for his book. She looks amazing. I love this version. I remember recording it and watching it until the tape wore out.
Yes! The moment I saw her walk out I thought the same thing.
In the springtime of her voodoo. As we all were. Love you Tori. Genius. No one like her.
I love how she was even in a nightgown to symbolize The Exorcist girl. lol
This is magical. Give me that old time religion.
so wild... the best rendition so far ❤
One of the greatest performances I have seen.
Thought the title track to "Little Earthquakes" was Kate Bush the first time I heard her...then I realized it was the girl from Y Kant Tori Read which a record shop employee friend put me down on. This version of F/L was a little rushed for the runtime of David Letterman.
She looks so pretty here I can't handle it
I could watch her sing the phone book and be mesmerized
Fabulous
Intense...
it was lovely - what a fool
Gees woah
He says I run from him and then I run....
❤
Its interesting she chose to sing a stack on the bridge and not the main vocals. Im still trying ro figure out what all the Tori's are singing in that moment. Can anyone direct me?
She's singing about worshipping satan. She's a self proclaimed satanist.
I love this album, but for a minute there I thought she got the spirit.
Makes me think of gemas gpa, caretaker, and tig
They Sold Their Souls for Rock N Roll documentary brought me here. Lol wow. She's really singing about worshiping satan on David Letterman.
I never could of loved someone I wasn’t inside of, she plays so fast. I’m that guy. 😢
😧
What song was the “it’s only glass” part. I’m familiar with this song but not this live version, which sounds like she merged a few things in here, including Tubular Bells.
The “only glass” part is the backing vocals in the bridge :)
@@cherrrymaraschino Oh okay, thank you.
❤❤
Those at the top on earth will be at the bottom in the afterlife. Fame is not with your soul, Tori.
2025. I listen to this and think of the recent Neil Gaiman allegations and sob. 😭
You’ve got to be fucking kidding me
This live version is awesome because she looks like an insane Disney princess... Unfortunately, Letterman was too stupid to pronounce his guest's name's correctly , so the points go to Leno who took 2 seconds to learn the correct pronunciation of "Amos".
Show me a band Letterman took seriously where he said something as stupid as "Who's that guy?!"
could have the lyrics
Lucifer is not a father
He is 🫶🏼

According to Tori Amos herself:
“Father Lucifer is really about going to have a cup of tea with Lucifer, which I had to do. Now, when I say Lucifer, I'm talking about the feelings that we hide from ourselves [not something that's twisted and evil, like during the Inquisition when they used Christianity to torture people. That's Satanism.] I had to go in this record when I was trying to find parts of myself that I had not let scream and dance and have a tear. I went to go visit Lucifer to get my talisman, which means my little magic key that took me to the places that I hadn't let myself go. That's really about having a little tango, a little dance, with Lucifer. The idea that Dark is not a scary thing if you go in there understanding there is a purity in Darkness. There's also a lot of distortion in Darkness. It's a choice where you want to go, and I wanted to get to the truth, not to the drama and to keeping me from the truth”. [Modern Rock Live - Feb 5, 1996]
Allegory, how does it work?
I love Yeshua , throughout principalities and times .
God is Good all the time, Jesus is God
He is the same Yesterday, today and forever.
I love you all in Jesus Name.
