Members of the US Army Reserve Shooting Team were asked to conduct a Squad Designated Marksman class on the M14EBR-RI Enhanced Battle Rifle for the 82nd Airborne Division, 2nd BN, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
Marksmanship fundamentals for the Designated Marksman taught by SFC John Arcularius of the US Army Reserve Shooting Team.

First, improve your shooting "slick", that is, without gear or armor. After building a better position, as proven by the results, and learn what "right" feels like, add gear.
Restrictive equipment may force a change or compromise in position, but at least you'll now know what it's supposed to be like and can emulate that more closely.
This is contrary to what drill sergeants say. Go to All Army once and see how poorly they shoot, then ignore them.
It is a popular myth among the misinformed that there is a difference. Fundamental skills apply everywhere. That's why they are "fundamental."
Learn to shoot better. Improved skills equals improved performance anywhere you need to perform.

You were told wrong. This will not induce stoppages/malfunctions/jams or any other problems with the M16/M4. In fact, using the magazine for support has been a winning technique at military shooting events that allow no alibis for stoppages for decades now.

You're aren't trying to sacrifice position but hits can still be obtained from an less than optimum position if sight alignment and trigger control are solid.
Consistent head position, as determined by cheek weld, helps ensure consistency. The sights are always aligned... somewhere. Getting your head and eye behind the sights in the same place coupled with your natural point of aim on target center makes sure this alignment is where you want it.

I feel military training like this is absolutely the best way to get the most out of a trainee. I wish the civilian world would invest more into training.
Shoot formally-organized events such as competition and you'll learn all this and more. Civilian or military, everyone benefits from that exposure.
there are training much more superior to the military training for civilians out there. just depends how much money you have

Most "training" is really just instruction. That is, a class introducing concepts. Except for the rank novice, 2-5 days of "training" (instruction) won't appreciably raise skills.
Beyond novice levels, training is organized, on-going effort programmed to systematically raise skills and capabilities. This requires devising the means to measure skills and capabilities to determine if they are increasing.
Most gun owners, military and civilian, never train beyond novice levels. Outside of formal, organized competition few venues exist that push progress beyond introductory levels. Many make the claim but few deliver.

FUNshootVideo probably true, but I do think people that have a ccw take it very seriously. I think most of them practice, know their skill level, and know the legal ramifications after a shooting.

Most designated marksman courses are designed to be used with standard issue rifles, sights and ammo. The increased precision is from increased knowledge and application of skill.
Great vid thanks. I took a lot of notes and am going to take them to the range with me. I just built my first AR with 20" barrel and hope to shoot out to 600 yards.

@@FUNshoot he was my instructor/mentor in 05... then I went on to teach at Dix in 08
15 min in. The M-14s mag lock in 2 points on the front and rear. The M-16s mag only lock on one point on the side. The M-14s mag has the least chance of moving vs the M-16. I'd have to disagree with what he said.
Magazine contact while shooting an M16/M4 series or any AR-15 derivative is reliable. It is also officially recommended in Army training doctrine (finally) after decades of successful use in Service Conditions competition.

16 pound rifle. Yes I’d love to carry that around.
EBR base weight is under 12 pounds (about 5kg). M110 SASS is just over two pounds (1.2 kg) heavier. But your point is taken; neither would be a treat to carry around for days at a time.

@ parallax : If you are wearing glasses you probably wont get any optic parallax free because you add a third plane to the game. so eighter you choose to wear contactlenses which I dont or you have so little dioptrin that you can for shooting get rid of your glasses and compensate with your diopter-ring for sharpness. I had not had somebody to explain this to me until I met benchrest competition shooters who are always in the top 5 and not seldom win their competitions and both wear glasses :) No video on tube explains this.
Interesting point. Light passing through any lens causes refraction. The ocular lens of many optical sights can be adjusted such that a person needing corrective lenses can use the scope without their glasses. For example, my uncorrected vision is horrible so I do this with all crew-served night vision optics.
I'm just telling you the experience I had with Army M16s and M4s combined with really shitty mags. Nowadays they got nice Pmags and other mag options, but with the mags they gave us, we'd have a bunch of jams if we put the mag on the deck in the prone and pushed forward on the weapon. These mags were shitty as hell, but you have to understand that it's not a matter of being told one thing or another, it's a matter of us encountering this problem in the field. With good mags, it doesn't matter.
Equipment in poor condition can malfunction. That is a problem with the equipment, not the technique.

Fair enough! With bad magazines or some other mechanical problem, using the magazine for support certainly can induce a stoppage. Of course, these stoppages may occur without touching the mags at all because the mags were, as you say, shitty.

It's all in good fun. The National Guard has very good marksmanship programs and shooters.
The only problem I have with the video is that magazine discussion. We were told never to place the mag on the ground while shooting the M16/M4 because the old magazines we had would rock back and forth so dramatically with the weapon. If you put the rifle on the deck with the mag in the dirt and pushed the weapon forward, it would start to have jams because it'd change the feeding angle of the cartridges. Sometimes you could clear a jam by pulling back on the rifle and it would chamber.
This is a myth.

Well, just telling you what I and others experienced. I think, with an in-spec rifle that's up on annuals and quarterlies, and with quality magazines and ammo, you shouldn't ever experience or expect to see this at all.
These issues did happen, but they happened on well beat-up M16A2s, and really shitty black and green follower mags that were very well-clapped out.
Never saw the issue again with good mags and ammo, and M4s with M4 feed ramps -even though they weren't totally necessary, it certainly wasn't hurting anything.
But this did happen, I'm not lying about it, but again, if your equipment is outdated, used and abused garbage, you just need to replace it with good stuff and you'll be good to go.
I always deployed with Pmags, I'd buy my own before each deployment because the metal mags we were issued were just junk. These days, a lot more units in the Army issue Pmags, and I'm glad to see it. Nobody should ever see this issue with quality shit, monopod on the mag all you want. But if you're in a guard or reserve unit that's got clapped-out mags, this is a possibility.
@@Mr2ndAmendment Very good points. If your equipment is "outdated, used, and abused garbage" then that is the real problem and is unacceptable even in a training environment, never mind a deployment.

Guess I should have included the part of the class I did not record when we cleared and disabled the rifles prior. Nah, wouldn't have mattered.

However, immediately after this class during their deployment to Afghanistan, these Designated Marksmen did hurt plenty aggressors. We know because they told us in thanks.

This is real truth and they didn't use it during my enlistments. I wouldn't have had to shoot the guys targets next to me on the range had they properly trained them. Was it ignorance or did they just not give a damn then?

What was the book mentioned about the 37-38 minute mark regarding biomechanics? Bill pullens positions?
I noticed when I shot the .45 1911 I was better at 50ft than 25... that tells me I have a problem... even though its a pistol you have the same difference. Maybe I'm wrong.

SDM courses are not a DA 1059 course with Additional Skill Identifier. The AMU (active) NGMTU (National Guard), and Army Reserve have hosted various classes over the years.

Hi, I'm enlisting in the Army and I ship in January. I see that the slides before the video say "Army Reserve" but I was wondering if there was anything like this class on the Active side, also if this was just a one time event, or if it's constantly going?
The class is for Designated Marksmen that happen to be using the EBR. Fundamentals are the same for everyone, Reserve, Active, military or competition shooters alike.
In the active component, the Army Marksmanship Unit conducts similar courses. Both the AMU and USAR Mobile Training Team offers these courses regularly.

This usually does not cause any problems. Especially with AR-15s, it is perfectly reliable to do this.
