- British soul queen Mica Paris originally recorded the Rod Temperton ballad "You Put a Move on My Heart" in 1993 for her third studio album, Whisper a Prayer. In 1995 Quincy Jones produced a Tamia cover of the song for his album Q's Jook Joint. Tamia's version received a Grammy nomination for "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" and was later featured on her 1998 self-titled debut album.

It's one of the greatest r&b ballads for me. This is such a classic. I just wish Mica got more recognition for her original recording.
I hear Mica is back working with Rod on her latest album *___* her Whisper a Prayer album is my favourite of her's
I heard Mica first and it made me purchase the CD no other version has changed my mind. Mica voice makes you want to be in love.
Both did a great job but I heard Mica's first and I love her bluesy take. Plus those series of F5s just do it for me. But I stan for Mica so I'm a little biase. I love Tamia's crystal clear soprano though.
Mica should have blown up in US.
Yes Mica should have blown up in America.
Both have a uniqueness undeniably so
I fell in love with Mica in college she is and will forever be My One Temptation and bless you angel for loving her and me!!!!🤗
Mica's version for me all day long. What a phenomenal voice! Produced by Rod Temperton too - my all time favourite songwriter.
I love me some Tamia but MICA SANGS THAT DAMN SONG LIKE A GROWN ASS WOMAN WITH THAT SMOKEY SOULFUL VOICE AND HER FEEL IS NOTHING BUT PASSION!!!!!!!
I never heard Mica's version before but I cant stop listening to it. Love both versions. I love how both are so totally different. Tamia's version is my fav but something about Mica's voice I FEEL it more. Ugh! Both just amazing.
I got chills miss mica! I thought tamia sang it first as well. you learn something new everyday. I respect the original but I have to give tamia credit. they both killed it.
Mica all day man. I just favor female singers with lower voices because they have "core" to their sound that you don't hear in some sopranos with a few exceptions (Whitney,Patti,Lisa Fischer, etc). Mica's voice is smoky and sultry, but yet it is like fine cocoa butter. She is very reminiscent of Anita Baker in that aspect. Love me some Tamia, but Mica has me here.
Agreed with you on that.
Mica voice is raspy which I love and to hear her sing you’d never know she was British
Mica's version make you give up your credit cards!
Peaceful peaceful rising. Thee Michelle Williams 😳mg Appreciate you 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
They both Kili - ng it
I played this song on repeat for hours while driving across the country.. LOL and i literally sang my butt off too😩🤣
BOTH WOMEN give beautiful, dynamic presentations. The lyrics are special, the music arrangemets are DAMN FabULOUS!!!! SULTRY, SEXY just plain HHHHHHHOOOOOTTTTT!!!!
Bottom line: ROD T is a PROLIFIC writer. Run with that.
Quite frankly, 2 powerful voices, and versions! Both have the power to give one the chills!
Yeah, at that 5:30 mark. mmmmmmm!
Before anyone gets their feelings hurt, I love both versions and I have both CD's. That being said, Mica sounds like a grown ass woman, while Tamia sounds like a younger woman who had Quincy Jones in her corner. Again, much love to both ladies and both versions touch my heart in different ways.
For me Tamia's voice is so amazing and seeing her sing it on Soul Train was very memorable.
TRU STORY: I originally heard this song when Tamia recorded it in 1995. I was introduced to Mica on the message boards around 2000. I downloaded some of her songs off Napster & liked what I heard. 27 years later, tonight I hear the Mica version. I did not know this existed. I heard Tamia first & didn’t know about this version until tonight. No preference I appreciate both recordings for what they contributed.
My all time favorite song by Tamia.
Both versions are legendary and iconic. Two of the best vocalists and songstresses. Mica Paris is the Master with that Grown Woman Energy! Tamia is that Pretty Young Thang with control of her vocal range! Love them both
This is my favorite version of this song . Her voice is so soulful and rich. Just beautiful ❤
Mica is superb and well composed
I think it's based on who you heard first. I heard Tamia's version first so I naturally compare Mica to her. Now, knowing that Mica is the original, I can say she gave it emotion that Tamia didn't. Both are amazing singers though!
Phew! Tough choice...Mica's voice is a bit more raw and spontaneous, while Tamia is refined and her power lies in the absolute focus on phrasing and her ability to pound out her emotions with orgasmic sensuality. Both are a joy to behold vocally and physically, what a pleasure for my ears, heart, and soul!!
Mica deserved to be bigger in the US. I love Mica’s voice so much and her vocals are top-tier she really made you feel the longing of the lyrics. I also love Tamia’s version and it’s the one I first heard. These two are vey gifted singers and we were blessed to hear them sing this beautiful song.
Mica the best
BOTH SINGERS SANG THE SONG WELL...THERE IS NO COMPARISON BECAUSE BOTH VOICES ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT, MICA'S VOICE IS SULTRY AND DARK AND TAMIA 'S VOICE IS SEXY AND SAD IN THIS SONG...BOTH ARE GREAT!!
Mica's version is more powerful of course because Mica is a vocal powerhouse, but this version fit the 90's sound well. Both did their thing though. I remember loving the video for this, she looked so good.
Tamia’s version is a classic for a reason. Tamia’s clear range took it to another level.
Tamia's is a classic because Mica's wasn't released as a single. Critics said that Mica's was the better version.
Micas was released as a single in Europe. Critics don’t buy the music so I’m pretty sure Tamia would’ve still outsold Mica and her version would’ve still had its success. Quincy could’ve easily chosen Mica’s version if the critics felt so strongly about it🤔🤷🏽♂️
Tamia is a screecher. Just listen to her live performances. Mica is a classic. Now and forever.
@@trevorteeters2383 so legendary producers and songwriters went against their expertise and chose to put a screecher, who made their songs successful……ok……anymore critiques 🤔
@@BETillman and fucking Quincy Jones to get a contract didn't hurt either I'm sure. 🙄
I'm more familiar with Tamia's version, but Mica had me out of my seat man!! I was like SING DAMNIT!!
Both did a fantastic job on this song. Both share personality and vulnerability in their performances. No clear winner, just a matter of preference.😍
Loved this song from Q! Didn't know about this version until today! Mica's version sounds more adult! I love both!
TWO QUEENS!!!!!
Pulled This Up Because I Had Mica On My Mind This Morning after one of her songs Popped Up During My Shuffle Play. I Honestly Heard Tamia's Version First And It Was YEARS Later when Hearing Mica's Original Version. Although Both Version Are Stellar Performances; Mica KILLED This Song, Mind You She Was 23 years old When She Recorded This!!!!! Who SINGS Like THAT At That Age!!?? I Love The Song And Both Versions BUT It's Mica ALL DAY LONG!!!
I like both versions but I think Mica's is just a little better in my opinion. I love Mica's voice so much. She is criminally underrated.
Mica, Mica, Mica! I love her version best. And I love Tamia, she is one of the last great singers. But there is such a passion in this song that Mica just digs into. Each time I listen I hear something different. Her range from the highs to the lows. But Tamia’s version is romantic and sexy.
They Both are GREAT they got their own unique style that sounds just as good as the other BIG LOVE 2 YOU BOTH
No question... Tamia has a lighter sweet pop voice and tone. She does a great job. But Mica puts her foot in her version. The lower key suits the song better too.
She can sing but Tamias version captures my attention more
I've been down with Mica Paris since her 1st hit " My One Temptation" Her voice is the truth. Don't get me wrong Tamia can sing, but theirs something about Mica's voice that gets me every time I hear. Her career should have been much better. Would love to see her live.
I will respectfully have to give it to Tamia. Her voice is so sweet and beautiful.
Prefer Mica version by far. In fact, Mica's is the epitome of the perfect voice for a perfect song.
I would have loved to have had Aretha record this song. I have a feeling that it would have been awesome. Mica's recording of this song is just simply stunning.
I didn't know Mica sung this song first. I thought when Tamia sung song it was an original song . I guess we learn something new every day. But I can tell the difference between both artist and the music. Mica is a great singer. But It something about how Tamia sung this song. The conviction of this song is something special. All I can say both lady did they thang on this track.
Yeah Mica's original comes from an equally underrated and stellar r&b album. Def. check it out if you haven't already
I did check out her album and I'm a fan thank you.
Awesome, what's your fav album of her's?
+Slaychelle I don't know the title her album. I was just on TH-cam Listening to her music. And I must say that I enjoy Mica music.
MrBlactye
Glad you do :)
Mica’s voice here is stunning, so much soul and blues, it’s my preferred version. But Tamia sounds great too, what gifted singers they are.
Mica recorded it originally, 2 years before Tamia ;)
Mica version was 1993 Tamia 1999
@@bdscorpio1 Tamia and Quincy’s version charted in 1995, same year as the album Q’s Jook Joint was released
I LOVEEEE lol Mica Paris version. People I’ve shared it with look at me. Lol
U can't compare Tamia to Mica. Mica has the most beautiful n powerful voice in humanity. Tamia can sing but there's no comparing to Mica
well, blow me away with a feather! I never knew this classic was a cover!
Nice cover,and i still love Tamia's version.
Mica Paris was sounding like Anita Baker in her version. She has a great soulful voice! I am used to Tamia's version, and her higher key. She had less vocal acrobatics and sang it clean.......but Mica slayed. I love Tamia so this is hard for me to admit. (However, Tamia has torn up this song live, so counting that, it's a tie imo).
I heard Tamia's version first, but I didn't know who the singer was, so when I went to find the song, I found Mica's album(maybe because I was living in Europe at the time, and I believe Mica is British). Anyways, as I'm listening to it I realize this is not the version I know....BUT I LOVE IT! Tamia's voice made me look for it, but I'm glad I discovered Mica.
They both killed ... but I gotta give it to Mica ...her version is far more sultry!
My first time hearing this version. Sis did that!!!
tamia's voice caresses my soul.
they're both great but I prefer Tamia's version. maybe because im used to that one.
Brooklyn Jones u ain't the only one. I like tamia BETTER. plus Jennifer Hudson version too
I didnt know there was a Jennifer Hudson version! Imma have to look that up
If I didn't know this was the original, I thought it'd be a knock-off cover. Tamia's is way better.
@@RiceDaddy07 I agree, wasn't feeling Jennifer Hudson's, nuthin against her, but Tamia's is the best, one of those songs that needs 2 be left alone.
Daaaaamn Mica!!! OK I had never heard the Mica Paris version....I feel embarrassed to say as much as I loooove RNB...Bus she KILLED IT!!! Yeah gotta go with Mica on this one!
Imagine combining the Mica vocals with that production- that is the best version. Unfortunately that is all Tamia has on Mica- better production. Vocals go to Mica Paris any day, what a version
Vocally=Mica
Production=Tamia
Love them both. Mica is soulful while Tamia is sultry. Love the g5 note sung my Tamia.
BOTH....Masterfully done
I like both versions but Mica has that tone, that rich, soulful, depth to her voice ( kinda like Anita Baker) that - in my opinion - just puts her version ahead of Tamia's.
I listen to them both I love them both two beautiful women two beautiful voices one beautiful song
I prefer Mica's recording, it is perfection. However, I have seen Tamia perform the song live in latter years with her mature voice and she performs it better than her recording. Both are true talents.
Mica's album was aptly titled 'Whisper A Prayer' because her style on this rendition is quite reminiscent of The Whispers. I grew up on Tamia's version, but Mica takes the cake.
I'm sorry. I hate pitting women against each other but mica voice is another level.
I have never heard this version before. But this gonna be first time listening to this on here.
tamia for sure!!!!!!!
Mica version is way better. Mica voice is sounds genuine the music sounds better. Tamara is trying too hard I get bored it's being sexy and mica version is stunning real and is so lovely to listen to. Mica 's voice is brilliant so is the song & music . One of my faves.
*Tamia
Who's Tamara?
Mica😍
Both great but I love a clear voice like Tamia’s
love Mica's version too, but in my opinion Tamia's version is the better version, that's just my opinion........both have beautiful, powerful voices
You can REEEEEEEEALLY hear Tamia trying hard to duplicate what Mica did effortlessly... 🤷🏽♀️ Do the Mica/Al Jarreau “So Good” comparison another song Mica did first...
You took it way back 🙌🏿💫💫
I think her vocal range video will be my next. Finally got her most obscure album so it'll be as complete as it gets :)
How Can we Disrespect the Original tamia voice is so sweet Period she’s the best…
Oh it's coming very soon. I've compiled all the notes for a studio range video and I've done a lot of notes for a live one too :D
Quincy Jones found a diamond in the ruff when he got Tamia to sing this song on his album.
Mica all the way. Heard Tamia first but Mica is the real deal. Did not even know Tamia had done a cover
mspinkpanther I didn't even know that there was an original I thought Tamia wrote that with Quincy Jones and Quincy is a great producer both Tamia and Mica did a Fantastic job....
I remember when Quiet Storm on WBLS played them back to back and every single person who called in liked Mica's version better. Tamia sounds like a screechy little girl, Mica is a soulful WOMAN.
Screechy little girl lmao damn Tamia is getting so much hate for this remake its hilarious
@@jenn5628 because she sucks and she only got a deal by screwing Quincy Jones!
And how you know, he told you? Not once online did I hear about this rumor it seem like you just spreading it just like the other Tamia hater because you mad her version is way popular than Mica's. You probably also pissed because Tamia's career flourished over the years and still is strong. Well get over it, it's okay to not be a fan but its no need to spread lies because you're mad. But this convo is done, you're muted don't even respond cause I'm not answering anymore. Peace...
@@jenn5628 no my friend at Qwest records told me. She'd come in holding his hand then come out hair all JBF and walk out alone. 🤣
Yes, she did.
I think they both did a good job, so I don't know why fans are pitting them against each other. Some of the comments from these old ppl on here are embarrassing, grow the fuck up smh
Mica!
Got Mica original CD. Hadn't listened to this song, in a while.... when 'it' played on the radio, I thought..
"Something's wrong with that song. Don't remember it sounding like that. It's way off"
Ok, a remake. No comparison for me. Mica etched it in stone.
I like Mica Paris version better!
Every time I introduce Mica Paris version people stand back and just stare at me. The original is the best
Billie Sheppard it shatters their worlds lol and singers/musicians can hear Tamia trying to reduplicate every run Mica did...
Loving Memories when I tell you I was in Cali last year introduced Mica version smh this man was like yo lol
Tamiami buy that long note the music right were she is now that's not to say Mica didn't move me she did but you can tell the difference the you put a move on my heart note just wasn't there for me
As much articulate mica is with her vocals and the jamming of the electro guitar, Quincy's bras backing up Tamia took the song into another place, I prefers Tamia because she way she lead the chorus and brass into the final section of the song
I rly hate auto correct
Mica's original is good and she can sing, but Tamia tore it up and took it to another level. Tamia's is my favorite
Although I’m used to Tamia’s version and both did great... imma have to take my hat off to Mica because that pitch hits different
I never knew Mica is the originator of this song. After listening to both versions several times, Mica is the clear winner. Mica has a more smoother, soulful baritone voice. This makes the song more, softer, sultry and romantic. It just has that timelessness about it, that you can easily hear at a beautiful wedding. Mica has the sophistication of Nancy Wilson with a modern twist of Anita Baker. Tamia who's version I Loved for years sounds more pop-ish. At times she sounds nasally like she's screaming. I would have never noticed this if I didn't hear the original. Even the musical composition of Mica's sounds better. I use to say that Tamia's version would be my wedding song buy I have now changed my mind. It will be Mica❤
Tamia wasn't taking any prisoner. She kick it the best.
Mica's is the better vocal performance but both versions are excellent. Well done the late Rod Temperton for writing a classic love song and Quincy for the production and arrangement. Simply stunning.
Actually fully composed and arranged by Rod Temperton and thats was for Mica Paris, he was a very humble genius, he wasnt an attention seeker and a lot of people do not realize the genius he was. Quincy remixed this for Tamia
No comparison.. Tamia will out sang Mica...
To me it's a draw but the song wins all round - it has to it was composed by Rod Temperton!
Mica closed it better. Tamia started it better. Excellent work by both.
Another vs that I feel would be a good topic of who had the better rendition of as we lay, Shirley Murdock vs kelly price lol
I still say that Mica's alto fits better than Tamia's soprano in any given day for this song.I respect my name sake but he should of left it with Mica.
I agree
@@TerrenceBowden-i4k Thanks I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Well too bad her version never blew up
This is stupid. Why do people always feel the need to compare?!?! Don’t put them against one another
Why so angry? You chose to view and comment
Slaychelle I chose to comment after I googled Mica’s version and I saw this after a few results. The bottom line is we don’t keep asking “who sang it better?” or “which do you prefer?” when both sang it amazing. I don’t know why this is trend whenever someone does a cover. There’s always someone saying it’s not as good as the original. All I’m saying is stop putting great singers against each other like this “Mica vs Tamia”
I agree its just stupid
It's just music nobody here is pitting them against each other you like the music or not
Mica is a great singer but Tamia's version is better imo.
Disagree with you on that remark.
Still love Tamia all the way
Oooommmggg y'all I'm #confused.com...they both killt it maaan..both ladies have their own hold over it but brilliantly sang by both.. yes there is a lil bias on who's version you heard first however earlier comment on Mica woulda been a huuuge star In America But she is supa talented and the UK record companies never did enuff to put her into the stratosphere..both woman really killt it but I gota go wit Ms Mica first then Ms Tamia first second
Rod Temperton did the best version IMO. : )
Hard 2 compare
Tamia. Hands down
I think I heard about it
