Money can't buy happiness, but if used appropriately it can certainly lubricate the gears of happiness.

Yes and No, but yes because money buys freedom and flexibility. Things that suck in life, are easier when you have more money.

Sometimes the things that suck in life can be completely bypassed when you have money too. Other things that suck in life can be turned from a crisis to an inconvenience

I've been listening to your show for years and love it. But one critique, if you don't mind. While listening, I often wonder: "Is this show just for rich people?" The examples always seem to about buying big houses, fancy cars, boats, and so on -- advice for affluent people. But many millions of people are just struggling to pay rent on their apartments, afford groceries, and somehow still pay the bills. I'm doing all right now, but when I was struggling, any house or car were out of the question -- it was rent an apartment and take the bus. I'd love to see episodes with advice for "normal people" too.

    • @arh1234
      @arh1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Their show is for "financial mutants" - people who live within their means, plan for the future, and, frequently, aspire to/have high income.
There is lots of content out there to help with budgeting and low income. Budget Mom, old episodes of Budget Girl, and the Ramsey Show are good (and entertaining!) starting points. The Money Guy is the next step.

Good content. You can't say enough about the value of developing real skills and abilities. Being good at something really does generate a kind of intrinsic satisfaction and fulfillment, but it is also what the world around you notices and responds to positively.
People may experience some jealousy or envy of you when you buy some super nice thing, but they don't admire you or respect you very much for it. Some will even look down on you for it. Having a skill on the other hand is nearly universally admired and it attracts people to you for the right reasons.
The example I give is with musical instruments. Anyone with money can go buy a $2,000 super high end guitar, and you may get some ooh's and ah's when you show people your beautiful guitar but in the end, no one cares. It's a shiny piece of wood. Being able to play the guitar on the other hand, is what people respond to. Even if it's a budget model $200 guitar, if you can play it well then will people will admire and respect you when you share that skill with them and create music. Someone with a $2,000 guitar they can hardly play on the other hand will be treated as a fool. It is the same with all possessions, in the end no one cares about what you bought, especially your peers with a comparable financial situation. They could buy the same thing if they wanted to. They care about what you can actually do.

@themoneyguyshow Brian, would appreciate a show devoted to financial resources/tools/options for those families caring for and have special needs children. Are you able to have an able and 529 for that child, is there any benefit to having both or does able always Trump the 529, etc. What can able be used for and when...
    Thanks and God Bless.

Hey Guys! Great episode, one of my favorites ones yet!
I am so happy you talked about the "why" more indepth and into philosophy, and even went greek with eudaimonic.
I know you struggled with saying that word. I am not fond of how you guys make it sound like demonic haha.
I would pronounce it as Eu-Day-Moe-Nic. You can even say it more slowly to sound more sophisticated lol.
But you are totally right in saying that America views happiness as hedonic pleasures and theyre just going through a hedonic threadmill, which I blame adviertising on.
We all get used to things and get back to our baseline happiness.
As you said, real happiness is fullfilmen aka contentment in life aka life satisfaction.
Try to find what gives you fulfilment and life satisfaction. I dont know about Bo, but I think for Brian it is this podcast lol

Jarrett- I love the enthusiasm- once publishers showed interest (was originally going to self publish) the timeline has extended greatly 😔- no one shares this info with the public but bookstores typically buy 9 months out on new releases so from a logistical standpoint there are a ton of moving parts. If I had to do it all over- I would have slowed my roll on sharing that I wrote a book- this is the same reason I’m the worlds worst gift giver- when I’m excited I want folks to know 🤷‍♂️- thank you for being willing to buy once it drops- I will need you and everyone you know to buy too so I can make the waves I’m hoping for 🙏

Money buys safety, opportunities, freedom and everything else...easy for people with money to say 'money won't make you happy' while they are smoking a 10k cigar on their million dollar yacht on a Tuesday and their tank of gas is the cost of my student loans....while I'm stuck working 9-5 hoping I can put food in my fridge this week due to inflation....I would be much happier with the former. I get the concept but this ALWAYS makes me roll my eyes. Absolutely love you guys but this concept is infuriating.

All you really did was describe the sypmtoms (e.g. dopamine need, sugar rush, etc). Unhappiness is due to discontentment. Proper Brain "physiology" as you say is due to proper neurotransmitter functioning. The more balance of Dopamine, serotonin and other monoamine neurotransmitters the happier biologically you will be . Most unhappy people have neuro inflammation or lower levels of neuro transmitters. So if you want biological contentment (i.e. happiness) eat an anti-inflammatory diet and take high quality fish oil and ..... take polyphenols to activate AMPK...clear out all the dead cells and heal tissue. All measurable in blood.

I think privileged people don’t realize that yes having secure housing, not living pay check to pay check and affording healthcare can in fact contribute to happiness…like you said. You work with successful families. It’s a very narrow scope of what Americans are going through right now. This episode really seems to showcase the homogenous experience of those producing the show

I see what you mean, but having seen them tackle this concept before, I think they get it from your perspective too.
They talk about how higher incomes have a tangible effect on happiness up to around 70K or 80K because that’s what meets your needs and reduces financial worries.
Their point is that the jump from 70K to 140K wont increase happiness like the jump from 0 to 70K did. So once your basic needs are met, you should think about broader fulfillment.
