  • Mosaic pins are decorative fasteners used for attaching handles to knives. Bladesmith Walter Sorrells shows you how to make 'em! All you need is epoxy or some kind of casting resin; brass, stainless steel, or copper tube; and some little scraps of other material. (Full disclosure...a vacuum pump helps too!)

Walt's a professional. I'm a hobbyist. I just load the tube with epoxy with a Q-tip, then coat the rods going inside it with epoxy and cover both ends with painters tape. I do use the little piece of tape around the rods but I place it in the center, not on the ends. It keeps the rods centered inside the tube if they are just a bit undersized.

A break bleeder pump can work too.

If you do use a syringe try using a smaller volume one 1ml or 2ml syringe this way you can get more pressure compared to a 10ml 20ml syringe

You also don't need to just fill the tubes with metal! Small dowel rod of your choice of wood species!

The first one I did I used an aluminum round tube with a brass square tube inside it. I wanted something else inside the square tube and realized that a round toothpick fit perfectly snug inside it. A little black epoxy around the toothpick filled the corners of the square tube. I used the pins on a camp knife for my SIL with mahogany scales. I also once used a .223 case with the neck and base cut off for a lanyard tube.

Watching and I see a vacuum pump and I cringed; I’ve been through two stabilizing. My wife said I’m done buying them. I’ve been told that a brake bleeder from Harbor Freight will do the same job; I have yet to try it.

You could thin the epoxy with acetone, but, then it would just drain back out of the tube after you took the vacuum away.
