I don’t know what you do for a living but I believe you could write for an outdoor/fishing mag. Telling stories in a way that is entertaining is a gift and I believe you’ve got that. John Gierach has made a lot of money doing that. Bravo

    • @FLYALLSZN
      @FLYALLSZN  ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you so much! I might have to look into that

@@FLYALLSZN Go in with your eyes wide open.
Mags don't pay much - and you have to publish a lot of articles to make a meager living at it. The flyfishing mag market is shrinking. It isn't what it was when Gierach started.
It's tougher to get a book into print, but it pays better and creates a royalty stream downline - and articles can string together to make a book. Then your articles make book #2 while making market for book #1.
That said, the print market is in the suffocating grasp of inflation-driven economic decline and the rise of photo-driven social media. A sponsored social media channel (such as this one, with private sponsorship through Patreon and commercial endorsements) might provide better opportunity.
The field is crowded; anybody who can buy a GoPro and dangle a Perdigon under a ping-pong ball and call it flyfishing can enter the game. And the field is crowded with them.
It's a long-term row to hoe and requires an investment in photo and editing equipment. Grab some media marketing, film editing, photojournalism, and journalism courses as you can and develop your on-camera presence.
The things that set you apart are your respect for the resources, the quality of experience that they offer, and ability to articulate your sense of it all from an insightful and original point of view in well-chosen words. And, you know how to fish - and do a better job than most of handling fish on release.
Develop those things and they will set you apart from the wannabe's. You have the right stuff to do well.

Damn PB Whitefish and Westlope! Thats a win in my book, keep your head high man, bull trout are tricky to track down/catch

I totally agree! That is the problem with getting your expectations a tad bit too high!

I really enjoy your journal entries. I too can't stand the sound of a vehicle on a road, or the sight of other hominids. But I'm older now and can't do the grind like I used to. Live it now, my friend. I'll hike vicariously with you through your videos.

Mike, been a follower since the beginning and the quality of your videos and the information and history you provide are so worth the watch. Even though this trip didn't meet your expectations you still caught quality fish. Scenery was awesome other than the campsites. Lookup forward to your next adventure.

Hang in there, it's hard to keep yourself focused on the goal but time spent will make the investment worth it! Beautiful country and enduring all the recreational use by others is part of the game. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and learning experiences so that we can use some of this in our travels to that area, I too enjoy that area and marvel at all the amount of people who recreate there and still remote enough to help preserve it from some of the abuse we see in other areas. Thank you for sharing all your experiences and selections and success with certain selections.

I really enjoy your story telling style and the way you explain the fish in the system, I remember growing up in the Flathead Valley in northern Montana and seeing the small streams running red with kokanee salmon in the early 90s, that statement makes me feel old lol, love the videos brother keep them up!!!

@FLY ALL SZN no sir thank you!! you have encouraged me to get back out there, I have been fly fishing for the better part of 30yrs, just fish my local waters in Northern NV currently, but just booked lodging in island park with a guided trip on the henerys fork, I know it's gonna be crowded for the float but we have another 4 days to explore around the area, haven't looked forward to a trip like this in a very long time, and your videos have encouraged me to take some chances and get out there

Just found yer channel. I feel the same with a lot of fishing locations in my state. It’s frustrating and tough to deal with other anglers, But finding water bodies that you can’t even google are what it’s about

I was stationed at Mt. Home Idaho for a few years in the mid 80s and learned to fly fish on the South Fork of an Idaho river. I hope to get back that way some day. My favourite Idaho fishing memory was one day near West Yellowstone fishing another Fork, that of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake. Will you be back in the Midwest anytime soon?
