- Johnny "Dandy" Rodriguez demonstrates his style of riffing on bongos. He spent 37 years working with Tito Puente so he knows what he is talking about. He is one of the most renown bongo players in the world.
Way back in 1962, maybe 1963, I took myself to the Palladium Ballroom in the Times Square district on Broadway above 42 Street in the Manhattan borough of New York City. You know the place thanks to Dick Clark on Rockin' New Years Eve. The Palladium was a huge dance floor where Tito Puente 's Band played for the dancers. Why was I there? To see and hear how Puente's bongo player played mambo. I could not make it out on recordings due to muffled recording and poor playback equipment. What I left with was the bongo player hit a lot of cracks on the small drum (macho) enabling the rhythm section to become even more syncopated with irregular accents on 2 and 4 all done with blazing speed. I don't know if Johnny Rodriguez was playing for Puente on the afternoons I visited, but listening to the man crack the macho in this video, I think it could have been. Thanks man for the memories.

Dandy has been the best bongocero in the scene for the last 40 yrs. Puro sabor, afinque y mazacote. I must have listened to his solo on "Te Traigo Mi Son" with Barretto over 500 times. The man wrote the book on the instrument!

Dandy is so tasteful in his playing he knows how to let the music breathe this is what separates him from other bongoceros. There may be faster but few as tasteful.

Si. Johnny was with Ray Barretto for many years and them left with Vilato to found La Tipica '73. One of the all time greats! Jimmy is also one of the maestros of percussion.

A great instructional video for many a new comer and student alike. Great riffs and slaps creating a real smooth rhythm good enough to dance to. This is great to practice along with. One of the best to learn from.

@mecagondiosylavirgen amigo tiene razon tu comentario y elogios para el maestro Dandy, pero yo conozco personalmente a Carrillo y es tremendo bongocero, solo que el cuenta con su propio estilo, hay que admirar su rapidez, pero cuando el graba un tema o esta acompanando a el cantante sus matices son buenisimos,es uno de los grandes, tocaba para Palmieri y muchos mas, saludos.

arcaperdida el no lidereaba tipica 73 junto a Barreto, siemplemente porque barreto nunca estubo en la tipica 73. el Dandy se fue de la orquesta de Barreto junto con Adalberto y Oreste Vilato y formaron la tipica 73.
