I always thought, back in the day, that the Precursor are mighty beings with magical, sorcerer like, abilitys. During the time of the Precursor Legacy they where extremely weak and could only communicate through the oracles scattered around the world. Letting the so called Precursor Egg be touched by young Jak, somehow restored their powers, so that they could project themselves freely again. As to why the Precursor projection went to the past with Jak, I always thought of it like a good spirit like thing that would be with young Jak until he grows up and restores the powers of the Precursor again. Full blown Bootstrap Paradox. And maybe this "good spirit" was part of what gave Jak these Eco channeling properties in the first place. As if the Precursor want to be sure, that the cycle repeats itself properly every time. Something along those lines.
It makes more sense that the Precursors are energy beings especially when we saw first hand how ottsels are created with Daxter which is when someone has a sudden and dramatic encounter with dark eco. I propose that the Ottsels were sidekicks, companions, and aids to the Precursors and has since piggybacked off their name. It is not too dissimilar to the relationship between Jak and Daxter which come to think about is probably a factor as to why Daxter became an Ottsel.
What I think is that Ottsels are the physical forms that precursor enteties take to crate and interact with the worlds they build. But they can only get back to their etherial form outside of this relm of reality, so they had to make the holograms in their own image.
This is basically exactly what I always assumed. Like the Precursors exist on higher dimensional planes than we do, so when we see them in their natural state we just see an abstract energy being. Just like how the Greek gods would disguise themselves as humans to interact with the people of Earth, the Precursors created the forms of the Ottsels to interact with the physical plane in the worlds they created. My assumption as a kid was that the ottsels we see in Jak 3 were sort of "stuck" in their physical forms since the time of the Precursors, and were trying to regain the respect that they used to garner.
Maybe, it could also be that Kor doesn't even know the true form of Precursors. I think it would be tactical for an enemy to reveal an embarrassing truth like they're Ottsels. That "egg" could be anything in reality. The "precursor" that came out of it wasn't exactly a baby incapable of anything. It could very well be a recording programmed to react to something specific like Mar (Jak's) presence and do what it needs to do. Maybe it could even be an independent program, or can be controlled remotely by the Ottsels. Even with their reveal there is still a lot of mystique about what they are capable of. I don't know though. Personally I think your theory is fine, I just don't like the idea of a precursor hierarchy based on different types of precursors. It's much more satisfying for me to just assume they're all Ottsels.
Wait what, i assumed the actual precursors are meant to look like weird elephant guys, thats why all the oracles and the dark maker guys look like that. I thought the otsels were just claiming they were the precursors but really they'd just taken up the role. Or maybe they were originally like the elephant looking things but they turned into otsels from dark eco like daxter did

Sometime after that they evolved to a state in which ascension/evolution into a higher state and plane of existence was possible, if they choose that is, of course, if they choose too. Or they just got so smart they discovered a way to do it through some type of "somethingsomething" eco mysticism thing. So, let us say, they live as ottsels and at some point when they get old enough they dump their mind and soul into the egg/stone that it's filled with a cosmic size and/or type of eco for them to marinate inn. Think of it as some sort of cocoon like stage. After some long ass time they emerge as the cosmic looking energy/eco beings that can take any type of form they choose; the humanoid one that we see is just one of them which they use to show themselves to humanoid species. And at the same time the(let's call them) accended ones protect and maintain the reputation of their yet to ascend brethren.
That is pretty interesting to think that there are other variations of precursors. For me I always thought that was an early form of an precursor until they matured into their ottsel states which is why the precursors we see look like they are pure energy. Well thats just my opinion.

Powercell Freak well technically he used the precursor staff to do it but yeah. I'm not sure I've seen them do anything spectacular aside from using precursor technology. Even Daxter for that matter.

My idea for the precursors is that the term “precursors” is just a title that was given to the beings that came before/created the world. So the ottsels fall under this category as well as the light beings who are also labeled as precursors but in reality the two beings may not be related
Here's my take Whether you accept the theory of evolution or not, if you at least get the gist of it then try to apply it to the precursors. The ottsel was much like humanity when we first gained our sentience, our ape selves, the missing link if you will, but being from a much more advanced evolutionary line, the soul form precursors "missing link" being the ottsel, are capable of speech and cognitive thought on a level more closely to the average human or its equivalent in Jaks world. I think that soul form precursors are the next evolutionary step up from humanity or whatever they're called in this world. My assumption is that ottsels come first, evolved into humans, then somehow humans became soul form precursors! Whether the change acts as a sort of "afterlife" where the spirit returns to eco, crystalizes and becomes a precursor egg, or humanity in this world become precursors over the course of thousands of years of evolution and becoming one with their eco selves, allowing them to return to the beginning and remake their world. What do you guys think?
I think you are digging a bit too deep. I mean I cannot be sure, but my theory is that in Jak II the egg simply housed a spirit of a precursor, or something to that extent. Great theory none-the-less.
If Dark Eco turned Daxter into an Ottsel, then it could have turned the Precursors into Ottsels. The Precursors gained their incredible power from an overconsumption of Dark Eco, and now they are God-Like beings, in the bodies of rodents....?

The elephant look is based off their robots that forge worlds; theyre built like that by design for their purpose.

In my language (Italian) the one from Jak 2 and the one from 3 sound exactly the same, only the Statue with the stone sounds different.

As a kid i hated it so much that the precursors are ottsels. It takes all away what i felt about the precursors.
