  • In his latest weekly column, former IAS officer Sanjeev Chopra explains how VVIP culture isn't the same everyweher in India. Pointing out that VVIPs (of equal status) prefer to go about their work quietly in Noida, Greater Noida, but insist on VVIP privileges in Prayagraj, Sanjeev Chopra says,'It is the civic awareness, rather than any govt notification, that will be the key to creating a more egalitarian (urban) public space.'

In Prayagraj ( erstwhile Allahabad ) such beacons and flags are flaunted atop cars regularly .
    No one cares !
The occasional common man on the streets shrugs off such noisy vehicles passing by as ‘ nautanki ‘drama in English !

Police is accountable to politicians not people .
    Secure our borders .
Extra punishment for government servants in any illegal case if proved with double check , extra fast judiciary for cases against govt officials.
Create IVS ( Indian vigilance service) and ITS ( Indian teaching services) with three times the pay and perks , selection based on criteria different than exam merit, stricter rules for people serving in the services.
    And many more .

Good. You may some time also think of writing about people using prefixes like Advocate, Engineer, CA etc. to their names as the ranks are used by militaries. It’s another interesting trend that I have noticed over the past few decades.

I completely agree with you on this, Sir. As a resident of Noida, I haven’t noticed anyone displaying flags or insignias, but it’s common to see some cars with 'High Court/Judge' labels. I spent my formative years in the peaceful Doon Valley (1977-2000), where military vehicles often displayed rank flags or insignias, while very few civilian vehicles did so. This was before Dehradun became a state capital. I appreciate you bringing this up and enlightening us.

Recently I visited Lucknow and observed that several SUVs had hooter fitted in it. After enquiring with a local Car dealer I learnt that anyone can get it fitted by paying less than 10k. Conclusion: not only Civil servants but the ordinary citizens feel pride in flaunting their social status by these means.

Tho very nice and inside coverage of facets which was interesting.

If every important city in India became like Noida, Bengaluru or Hyderabad, these corrupt people would’ve lost all their status way ago. No government department or agency in India ever works properly except ISRO and BARC where people like these Babus are strictly debarred from entering and which report directly to the PMO.

But if the archors needed the flags for assistance in their aiming then why did they need to be near or on the commander's ride.
I think it is more of a symbol, we have seen how flags are hoisted and carried along even at peaceful settings.
As for the beam and siren, they are a status symbol. In our society, social status plays an important role in day to day affairs, how others perceive and behave to one another depends on this perception.
These so-called status symbols have taken the place of surnames, as class has somewhat taken over caste for some....

Sir with all due respect, Western UP is ahead than rest of UP because western UP always had advantage due its proximity to national capital, also Green Revolution had better impacted Western UP (due credit to its people and politicians). Eastern UP is catching up with all these schemes like ODOP and religious tourism. You cannot say that Eastern UP is leeching on Western UP.
PS- I am from central UP
