- Watch 32 students from École Polytechnique, France's top engineering school, dance the traditional Lancer's Quadrille at the Opera Garnier in Paris, France on October 8, 2021. It is the 129th edition of the Bal de l'X, an annual fundraising gala under the high patronage of the President of France. The charity event is organized by the Alumni Association of Ecole Polytechnique, the "Grande Ecole" also known by its nickname "X."
The Lancers' Quadrille, created in Dublin in 1818, was a very popular dance during the 19th century and soon became a key ingredient of social events during the Second Empire thanks to Empress Eugenie. The only other opportunity to see this dance is at the Ecole Royale Militaire de Belgium.
A succession of bows, curtsies and salutations are danced during the five figures: the Drawers, the Lines, Ladies' Star, Honour Your Neighbour and the Grand Chain, followed by a Polka Step. A prompter calls the figures, maintaining the British tradition.
The Drawers -- The dancers pass round each other, imitating the back and forth movement of a drawer.
The Lines -- There are two parallel line formations for the "avant huit," when the eight dancers, in two lines of four, move forward four steps, bow and move backward four steps.
Ladies' Star -- Ladies give their right hands across to each other and circle round. The movement resembles the turning of a wheel or a mill.
Honour Your Neighbour -- The first and second gentlemen lead their partners to the dancers on their right to whom they bow and curtsy.
The Grand Chain -- Dancers intertwine in their paths like a linked chain. This figure ends with a Polka Step.

I was doing research on the mid 19th century and now I've fallen into a rabbit hole of ballroom dancing. ❤️❤️❤️
It happened to me also. In this case, it was after watching the carefully rehearsed dance scenes in the 1990s film version of Pride and Prejudice.

This dance was done when women were wearing full court hoops, wide and heavy. Dignity was the order of the day. It's fun to watch this and think of the Contra Dance fun I had on Saturday nights. The patterns are the same but the styling is very different.
I was also comparing to Contra. Contra form is more lively, but in long skirts, hoops, and high heels this is best they could do! Lovely to watch.

From the Second Empire, new quadrilles appeared which alternated, during balls, with the French quadrille. The only one that stood out for a long time was the quadrille des lancers, which appeared in France in 1856 (but created forty years earlier, in Dublin, by a French dancing master).

Je n'aime pas trop ce que cela représente, mais j'ai souvent entendu parler du quadrille des lanciers, mes grands parents qui n'étaient pas des bourges s'étaient connus à cette occasion mon grand-père faisant son service dans la cavalerie, et, lors du pas piqué il avait glissé et s'était étalé, alors on m'a raconté évidemment cette histoire pour m'amuser, (il y a au moins 70 ans peut-être même 75) c'était aux environs de 1908 et je suis content de voir à quoi ça ressemble. j'ai souvent fait travailler mon cheval sur cet air entrainant et on l'utilise aussi dans les carrousels

@@zoeinthemetro Merci, j'ai fait quelques études et mes petits enfants vont dans les meilleures écoles ou les meilleurs facs du monde pour la spécialités qu'ils ont choisie, j'en connais le coût et ce n'est pas à la portée de tout le monde. il y a des quotas pour ceux venant de milieux modestes c'est très bien d'ailleurs. Je n'aime pas cet esprit de caste, ce sentiment de supériorité, et le mépris des autres, c'est la même chose à Scies Po ou à l'ENA pourtant sur le terrain le résultat n'est pourtant pas brillant, sans doute à cause de ça d'ailleurs.
