Remington EtronX: Electrically Primed Ammunition

  • One of the more mainstream attempts at incorporating electronic into firearms technology on the civilian market was the Remington EtronX, introduced in 2000. It consisted of a standard Remington 700 bolt action rifle, with the trigger and firing mechanisms replaced by electric versions. The firing pin itself became an insulated electrode, the trigger operated an electronic switch instead of a mechanical sear, and a 9V battery feeding a capacitor provided the energy to ignite the new type of primer - basically a resistor that would generate heat to ignite a charge of smokeless powder.
    Remington made a valiant effort with the EtronX, but came up short. Unfortunately, the only practical advantage to the electronic workings was a reduction in lock time of the action (the delay from trigger press to cartridge ignition). They did in fact achieve a virtual elimination of lock time, but this was not a problem that needed to be addressed for the general sporting rifle market. Between questions about ammunition availability and a general market rejection of electronic component in firearms, the rifle failed to sell, and was dropped from Remington’s catalog in 2003.

      You could easily convert it using a battery pack (instead of a regular 9v), some basic wiring, and probably a USB type-C connector. USB-C can supply 20v/5A/100w so it should be enough to charge a battery pretty quickly.
      I don't really see the advantage to charging the battery while it's in the gun, though. There's still the chance of the battery going tits up and leaking in the gun which would cause damage. Also, it would be more practical just to use a chargeable battery or battery pack that you just swap out on the go - that way if you NEED your rifle and it's not charged, you can just spend a minute swapping a battery rather than waiting ~15-30 minutes for it to charge.
      The easiest and best way to do this would be to spring for some rechargeable 9V or 9V compatible packs from the get-go and just recharge and swap them as needed. No wiring changes at all.

    1) As an old tanker, I spent a quarter century around electrically primed ammunition... in 105 and 120 millimeters. No big deal except there was this urban legend was that somebody in Germany had their radio antenna hit a power line and it detonated their basic load.
    2) IMHO this was a stalking horse for
    a) Sales of electrically primed small arms to the military (not a good idea, what if the bad guys are in the wire and you have a dead battery. Plus the proliferation of devices carried by the soldier that need batteries has developed into quite a logistical problem)
    b) Being able to tell the Gun Control Nutjobs, "See, we produced an easily lockable rifle that was impossible to shoot without the proper key and nobody bought it"
    c) Having something ready if California passed a law requiring all firearms be capable of being locked.

      How would packing spare 9-volts be more of a logistical hurdle than packing extra ammo? And how would ensuring the charge be a significant logistical hurdle than regular cleaning and maintenance? If you can't be arsed to check the battery every time you do a routine cleaning then I'd wonder if you're even doing the cleaning in the first place. Plus it's not like the battery's just gonna die on you in the middle of a shootout by the look of things, batteries don't really suck anymore.

    I was just out of college and shopping for my first centerfire rifle when these guns were on the market. I really wanted one, as I figured the electronic ammo was the future of firearms (the company Metal Storm was making headlines with its innovative experimental guns at the same time). The problem was just that it was a $2000 Remington 700. Sure, it has nice features like the fancy bolt handle and fluted barrel, but it's still just a boring ol' 700. Top that off with coming only in varmint calibers (though, yeah, .243 can take bigger game), and it just wasn't worth it when for that price you could get one of any number of much nicer or more versatile hunting rifles, or up to four used 700s in good shape.
    I think if Remington had gone a different route, it would have caught on. They either needed to release multiple models in lots of calibers, or they needed to just sell conversion kits, like a bolt and trigger group with a battery and capacitor in the bolt and/or trigger group.
    That said, I am genuinely surprised that these didn't become all the rage with bench rest shooters. Plenty of bench rest rifles are built on 700 actions, and that trigger and lock time seem like they'd be a real advantage.

Actually, it would be even simpler replacement for classic chemical primers because it's really just a capacitor + resistor and whatever source of electricity you want. Bonus points for saying "cheese!" before clicking the trigger.

    The military uses electrically primed ammunition in some ammo for rotary cannons. This was done because mechanical lock time limits the rate of fire.

      You likely would need way more current than you produce with a quick static discharge to actually warm the resistor primer enough to ignite the charge.

Finally, I ended up getting both in a conventional system for the price of one of the calibers in the Etronix. And, in case anyone wonders, it is .220 Swift for the win between those two but I still shoot them both, along with .17 Rem, .204 Ruger, .243 Win, 6mm Rem, etc.

    They not only put a lock onto the rifle, but but screws on the battery bank and neglected to put the screw head onto the key itself. That mean's there are two easily forgettable things that you need to fire the gun. That is really bad engineering in 21st century.

    The "Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual" is a real book from 1995, but it is supposed to be from the Aliens universe. It explains that in addition to firing caseless ammunition, the fictional M41 rifle series also has an electronic ignition system. Therefore, the designation “pulse rifle” refers to a pulse that is electrical. I speculate that in the “Aliens” universe, that way of referring to the action of such firearms must have been popularized in originally because it was a catchy marketing phrase.

    Interesting curiosity; may appreciate in value in the future, kinda like the Gyrojet.
    I wonder why no one's bothered to make a production railgun that fires common wood nails yet?

    • @CamTarn
      @CamTarn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For a conceptually very simple technology, railguns are surprisingly hard to productionize. They have a tendency to either a) weld the projectile to the rails, b) cause the rails to slowly erode due to sparking between the rails and projectile, or c) have the rails bend towards each other due to magnetic force. And then you need an absolutely massive battery bank to run the thing. Coilguns (which accelerate the projectile using electromagnets, rather than by just feeding huge currents through it) are a lot more sensible, but still need a big power supply.
      They are ridiculously cool though, which is a big plus ;) Some hobbyists have made sorta-portable ones which can get a few shots, albeit at a reasonably low velocity.
      It's really hard to get away from the sheer energy density of explosive propellants.

    Hey Ian. Thanks for all the work you do! Especially for coming to South Africa and showing off the weird and frankly cool stuff we used to get up to. I love seeing the engineering of all the weapons in your videos, which got me thinking.
    Question: Do you see this electrically-primed/electrical fire system as potential for the future?
    I have been thinking about it a lot. Using modern electronics, there does seem to be potential in creating modern electrical bolt/firing mechanisms, or by using modern air powered systems. What's your take on this? I hope we can see a lot more interesting weapons on this experimental front in the future, and you can bet I'll be staying tuned.

  • @GunFunZS

    What I've wondered for a while is since the primer is simply a resistor, is there any reason you can't just reload the brass with the old primer in place?

    • @Stoney3K
      @Stoney3K 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The resistor would probably burn out completely when the round is fired. I suspect the circuit in the rifle is somewhat similar to a photo flash, using a battery and a boost converter to charge a capacitor to a couple of hundred volts, and then dump that energy into an unsuspecting load all at once when the trigger is pulled.

  • @Fudmottin
    @Fudmottin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I remember when this came out. Cool ideas. Electrical priming was nothing new at the time either. And it's still in use. It's used in the Vulcan guns in military jet fighters. Not sure about tanks. Either way, electrical fire control systems have been around for some time now. With today's technology, you could have a camera in place of or integrated into the rifle scope and designate your target. Touch off the trigger and a little computer can then work out the moment you are precisely on target and auto-fire for you. All the technology to do that exists now.

If they wanted to do something significant powder that produced more velocity at a lower pressure and at a cooler temp that would have been something. They could have perfected the Remington 700 so it left the factory without needing to be blueprinted in order to be accurate. Like you said it was a solution to a problem no one had. I can understand some people wanting a key lock out for their firearm. Sure its not the best way to secure it, but as an additional step to using the rifle it could be sought after.
    Also, according to remmington the bullet would actually leave the barrel faster then a normal rifle would take to strike the pin. It's a really neat concept. I wonder if there could be a military use for the ignition system. If the ammo is able to withstand abuse and the battery was quicker to change it could reduce to number of parts in a rifle.

    The 22-250 and 220 Swift are varmint cartridges. The 200 rounds you cite would be good for up to one day of varmint shooting. The volume of precision ammunition for varmint shooting, ground squirrels, prairie dogs, etc., unless one is wealthy, would be beyond the normal varmint shooter if only factory ammunition was used. Cheap bulk isn't available in the three cartridges chambered in that variation.

    I LOVE the idea of electrically fired cartridges IF it is reasonably possible to somehow make your OWN if/when ammunition finally becomes a super hard thing to aquire like it IS in many parts of the world. I love the idea of being able to TOTALLY manufacture one's own ammunition ...and primers are perhaps the most daunting to DIY produce. Powder of some kind? doable even if not very nice ....bullets? Pretty easy to cast my Cartridge cases? Well there are likely a number of solutions including machining via billet stock ...a really heavy walled cartridge could last for MANY reloads...but I imagine cartidges could also be produced using brass tubing via dies ...but then you need to plug the rear section....which could be a soldered in machined pieces perhaps electrically welded in place? Anyway I can see DIY ignitions circuits being totally doable...just need a component list and a schematic and boom...literally boom...I just love the idea a person COULD build an entire rifle including ammo using conventional machines like Mills and lathes ....yes rifling is an issue but even that is doable....would a home built rifle and ammo be anywhere close to as nice as what is available right now? No of course not BUT it would be a thousand times better than nothing. I always loved how in Pakistan and Afganistan people machined firearms components using some really crude methods...and they WORKED! One guy made this and another made that and another could custom fit it all together to work...was amazing...an example?~~> th-cam.com/video/Ld-NKs47N-g/w-d-xo.html

    Good take! It’s a lovely thing, it really is. The problem with it really is that it’s a niche thing which makes it seem “gimmicky”, like caseless ammo. That doesn’t always appeal to the gun-buying public. The tiny lock-time and nada trigger pull would be ideal for sniping and competition long-range shooting.
    Now, (2021) how much would the average round cost??
    If there’s an aspect where paranoia is involved, it would come from rabid gun-controlling politicians who would want to mandate the system and then keep the keys. They would if they could.

    love the concept and know that some serious Olympic competition guns use it, but you would think they would chamber it in some more serious long range cartridges. The 220 swift is great but light for even a whitetail at any serious distance. Granted in 2000 there weren't as many serious long range cartridges as there are today there were still plenty of great options with practical hunting applications like the 264 win but even so even at the time any decent rifle can shoot far better than 95%+ of the people shooting them. You would also thing for these kinds of things especially at that price point that the barrel would be some high end match grade custom barrel.

  • @PalKrammer

    The moment Remington announced this I knew it was going to be a disaster. There is one redeeming feature not mentioned, which I’ll explain later.
    With firearms, there is a great amount of satisfaction and beauty in the weapon being totally mechanical. I am not alone in preferring manual transmissions, mechanical watches, and mechanical (film) cameras. Although people often say that the electronic or automated version is “faster” or “more accurate”, or “higher quality”, what all these explanations overlook is that the mechanical item offers its user a degree of engagement, involvement, and satisfaction that its automated electronic counterpart lacks.
    So what is the redeeming quality of an electronic firearm? It is that for the manufacturers the production costs will be lower due to fewer parts and fewer moving parts that need precise alignment and tolerance. For that reason alone the day of the common electronic weapon may come.
    Interestingly, today (March 2023) I found new Remington .22-250 EtronX in stock at $27 per box of 20 and regular Remington .22-250 at $32.

    Couple milliseconds is a long time. This system actually was meant to cut the ignition time from the trigger down to the MICROsecond level. Were talking about the speed of electricity over a circuit connector. The speed of light!! lol. IF you were to mod this system with a higher wattage capacitor system and increased the ohm level, you could literally blow bullets out the cartridge with lightning speed and increase your accuracy AND the velocity of the bullet.

    I wonder if it would be possible to do this but have the primers be reusable. Because even if it's a more proprietary case, reducing each reload from 4 parts to 3 is a pretty decent step (bullet, powder, case, primer, to just bullet, power, case).
    I could see it being marketed to the reloading community that really counts the pennies on each shot.

    The worse thing about it is the crappy lock. It's a standards commercial key switch and they are all keyed alike. That and the fact that the lock can be jiggled open trivially. Really they should have given it a nice waterproof on/off knob. In fact the safety should have been the on/off.
    Second thing is the choice of battery. PP3s are obsolete, they were obsolete then, they were useful when electronics was old bi-polar junction transistors, but with CMOS most circuits can be made to run on 3V, a couple of D-cells would give you 100 times the energy capacity.
    I guess what I am saying is: What would a modern version of this look like? Take the trigger off the gun, so you don't /can't pull the shots, put the trigger on a separate grippy thing in your left hand, bipod plus rear monopod, electronic optics in the sights with auto range finder, bullet drop compensator and all viewed through VR goggles so you don't even have to have a cheek weld...
