  • Tips on how to ride Hips!
    1, On the upward arc, turn bars in the opposite direction of the turn, and slightly dip your inside shoulder into the turn
    2. On the downward arc, turn bars back toward the landing, while upper body leans into the turn
    3. Your bike and body should match the landing in terms of pitch and also angle of the ground

    Following his own Pro Downhill mountain bike racing career, Simon Lawton (Owner and Founder) has spent the last 25 years analyzing the top riders in the world to understand the tiniest details that contribute to their greatest successes, and also any weaknesses that are holding them back.     ABOUT LINNEA ROOKE
    Linnea has been racing locally in the pro category, but until this year she had almost no formal training and was held back by major gaps in her technique. While she was able to carry speed well on straight downhills and high-bermed turns, she lacked foundational cornering skills and was timid in the air. In Feb 2020, she met up with Fluidride to help with a filming trip in Baja, and was fascinated by Simon's teaching methods. Wanting to be part of this mission, she left her career in healthcare in July 2020 to officially join the Fluidride team as COO. We started filming this series to document her journey of cleaning up bad habits, adding new skills to her toolkit, and chasing her dream of riding with style.

    this is one of my favorite videos of you two! It has so many good tips that are not just for the 'pros' doing advanced steeze. I really like how you empahsize it is also vital for bike control and being able to master different features. Like usual - the key was to "flow", and find the rhythm. Definitely some stuff to work on from this video

    Excellent again! The counter-direction move is like kayak paddling but with the head and shoulder looking and sticking to where you want to go. Great sport psyche discussion about progression for any new skill or structure.

    If she put on some body protection, it may help put her at ease when trying new moves. It helps me. I wear it the 1st few times I jump then take it off when I’m comfortable. I’m old and take blood thinners so I need the protection.

    Nice explanations: dipping the shoulder, send it and bend it, twisting the gummybear :-) , I always thought that I needed to initiate the movement before launching, but if I understand it right I can correct it afterwards using these movements. Thanks !

    Thanks for putting up this great content! As I’m working my way down all of these on your channel, I keep thinking about one thing that I think would make a great difference. (It’s been a year now since that vid so I guess she nailed it as of now) but the way I see it, she’s naturally “pulling” on her handlebar to turn them and the concept of diving the shoulder might be scary… Having a motorcycle and dirt bike back ground, I would approach this concept more like counter steer… pushing with your left arm (shoulder) instead of pulling with the right arm would make a big difference on shoulder action. Just an input to help people articulate what has to happen! Love you stuff ❤

    Brilliant stuff, I suppose this technique would be for jumps in enduro races where you are hitting them blind or maybe only seen once before, giving you more margin for error

      Hahaha yeah the trail was closed above us for trail work, and that's why we were able to stand in the middle 🤣. But yes crashing sounds are not uncommon there

    So this place, wherever it is, has a hiking trail along the side of it?

      It's a push up trail for the run. The park has these for almost every run, so riders can look at the course safely. On this day, the actual trail was only open to us. -Simon

    Just tried this on a jump leading into a berm and it works great! I came down ready to rail the berm. One question, though - countersteering seems to kick the back end in the same direction as where you turn the wheel. Whips seems to do the exact opposite. What am I missing here?

      Hey Patrick. Whips should land the rider straight and not turned at all. Not sure I fully understand your question, but am happy to chime in. Happy the CD steering worked though! The whip came from a scrub which allows riders to stay low off jumps. The whip was a fun offshoot of that skill. Whips are done on jumps with straight landings, where as CD steering is for landing into a turn. I hope this helps! -Simon

It just feels like the CD turns the bike like I started a whip but didn't finish, but I turned the bars CD instead of pointing where I want to go. Is the purpose of the CD to turn the bike in a new direction or just tilt it to match the landing?

      Maybe some slow-sleep cornering drills would be a safe and fun way to progress? It could absolutely transofrm your riding! We have a series called Driveway Drills on here that we launched in response to covid, when the trails closed down. Those are all things that can be done in a neighborhood and most of them are slow-speed things without crazy features. I know that doesn't solve the problem but maybe it will be a fun way to stay engaged - if it helps! -Linnea

    First of all, congratulations on learning to ride like Gummy Bear. I will say I'm having trouble with that concept. Would you have any of these Gummy Bears to demo on a ride? Are these the 5 lb ones? Second, a Pfizer commercial led me here. I am having trouble hipping and whipping in the because of my unrelenting full-body shivers. How do I counter this shaking in the air? It always leads to an accidental backflip. Portable heated blanket? Piping hot shower between sets like Olympic divers? Handfuls of vacations to Mexico in the winter? K thx Bye

      Today in class we actually twisted the gummy bear. A lot of gummy bears. They were Harbio and all flavors twisted equally well except the reds ones were the most delicious. And we know you're not having trouble hipping and whipping cause we've seen you ride 🤪

      We are still around! We never set out to be 'you tube' folks, but enjoyed making what we have so far. Our main gig is teaching in person and running international tours which we've done for over two decades. That said, we are making more content.     Why does she use minimal pads no elbow pads..My suspicion is they do a lot more practicing before doing the final cut

      It's a fair question. We actually don't do more practicing before the final cut - it's really important for us to show you the natural progression and that some things come faster than others. Like the first manuals episode was a bit of a flop in terms of progression but that's ok - we just to want to be honest when the skill takes more time than we expected. The elbow pads is really more of a bad habit combined with having a hard time finding ones that fit well. I'll wear them for high-speed downhill racing 🤦‍♀️ -Linnea

    With pads and armor, they can make beginners feel safer and less fearful of crashing. That’s where I’m at now.
