@@SamsTrains Dapol need to do different voices now for different regions of the GWR network the Midlands has to have either a Wolverhampton or Birmingham Accent and there needs to be one with a Welsh accent for GWR routes in Wales.

I kinda like when you do non-engine reviews. I mean I love locomotive reviews but not many people do reviews of much pertaining to model railroading, let alone add on accessories and the like.
Also you put your "Layout" in quotes, but I mean, it's out, it's laid down, it's definitely qualified as a layout.

I agree the west country accent is brilliant. Although for GWR areas modelled in the Midlands a Wolverhampton or Birmingham accent version would be good. I wonder if Dapol will do other railway companies water towers now? One in Scotland would be interesting.

This is actually a great little piece of scenery. I strive for realism in my stock, track, and what have you, and I still think with a bit of weathering it would look just fine - and of course the sound is a lot of fun!

You could modify reed switches to control lights too i would imagine.. changing the colour as the loco passes..

Sam, the top of the hose clearly has a hole for the chain end to go into
Raian Levy It looks like it was supposed to come attached, the packaging has the perfect angle in it. You'd expect them to support the tower more if they could.

Sam , I’d mod the filler hose pipe / bag , if you had something flimsy like say black bin liner material cut to size and fixed on place , it’s more flexible and would not bump into or foul the tender or say an A4 or another tank engine . . . . .

Prototypically move the bag onto the filler cap on the loco , I think heat shrink may still be a bit rigid .
One sound bite is missing from that FX chip though . . . “ can’t go yet , squires not here ! “

Hi Sam, great review and I got the same model from Rails of Sheffield too. I have added the tower on my loft layout within the steam shed area... It works very well and quite novel...great Wurzel's accent..!!! 😁
I have weathered the tower and painted the brazier and added a fire glow LED under it to represent the de-frosting fire.

There is a water tower similar to this at Buckfastleigh. I took a photo of it and judging from that, the vertical line on the tank it is where the two pieces of metal are joined. The one at Buckfastleigh is supported by a vertical riveted girder and has no conical roof, but in other respects it is similar. When I was at Buckfastleigh, I must admit I didn't hear the water tower talking to itself or deploying the water chute by itself, but that must be because it has yet to be converted to Dalek operation!

I just knew you wouldn’t resist get one of those. I think it’s a good idea and a bit of fun, Hornby take note that is how it should be done and not a wagon playing random noises perhaps they could bring back the motorised coaling stage with sound. Oh and your history, absolute classic 🤣.

Nice video to watch. I personally think a good idea for the next video could be an interview or DIY project of a coal dumpster for steam locomotives. TH-cam has had many takes but it would be interesting to see what yours could be.

If youre looking for another fun little accessory for the rail road. You could look for a Old Marklin crane, Their old cranky sounding metal cranes with oversized AC motors in the base and a working accessory slot for a working electromagnet or a rare claw. Due to how the motors are build you can use them with DC two.

A good fun thing to have, love the voices. I made a water tower myself out of a granola and yogurt container with a few sticks, electrical cable insulation and a brass tube.

That was a clever idea with that reed switch! To improve the performance, you might try a bit of graphite powder in the upper and lower swivels of the nozzle. Graphite is a dry lubricant so it won't harm the plastic like oil could.

I didn't expect this thing to have voices! Usually that's something Lionel or MTH would do, and more reserved for O gauge where you can fit a whole mechanism inside the water tower itself. But actually, Broadway Limited did do an operating HO scale water tower with sound and voices, which I didn't know about until today.

Sam the sewer thing in the bottom with the chains the chains are for hills so if the water tower was on the hill they would attach the chains to the engine so it wouldn't roll down the hill!

It's nice to see you do a review on a piece of scenery that you would see on a railway, you should do one of these more often! It'll be nice if you did a variety of different stuff to review this year such as locomotives (duh), wagons, coaches, scenery, train sets, and more! BTW, I love the look and the design of the GWR Water Tower, Dapol did an amazing job with this creation! I wonder what other model railway scenery Dapol has made? I can imagine they would make houses and stations too. Hopefully you can get some model railway scenery soon even though you have pretty much everything in your scenery already! :)

Hi Sam. I think the GWR Water tower was generally platform mounted hence the length of the rubber hose on the DAPOL model.

That was fun to watch. I really like the idea of this, but find it too costly for me. If it had a cheaper version with motor, but without sound, I might have considered it.
Seeing this did remind me that I want to think about how to add background sounds to various places on my layout: talking people at the station, flowing water near a stream, birdsong in a grove of trees, etc.
BTW: I didn't see a link.

I think you would really like the O gauge 14xx,I've never had one,but I hear they are amazing
To me, having the slightly jerky operation of the “snout” part actually looks better than a smooth operation would. I’m not sure about the UK, but most (if not all as far as I know) water columns in NSW were pulled over to the loco and put back again by pulling on a chain, (none were motorised in real life, it was all “Armstrong” power) therefore it would have taken quite a few tugs to get it in position and back again.

A great review, despite modelling American Narrow Gauge, it was an interesting article. About that not so flexible pipe. The simplest replacement would be a short length of the outer covering of a black shoelace, flexible and resembles tarred canvas too. Don't use the bit with the aglet though!

just bought one of these brilliant towers, but I have noticed that the base plate has a definite bend upwards. Looking at as many photos as I could, it seems most of them do this. Slight design problem there. It will not seat properly on baseboard without gluing....Ah well...gluing it is then ! Might let mr. DAPOL know when they return to work.
That's interesting Martin - mine seemed to sit flat, besides the spring from the wires! Yes it's worth letting them know if yours is deformed - you should be entitled to a replacement if that's the case!

You should utilise it for your running sessions. e.g. "fill up" your locos before or while shunting or running! It'd surely make for some variation of movement on the layout.
To expand on that, perhaps stop the odd train at the station, fill up the loco, then resume running, as if passengers have boarded while filling up with water. Just a suggestion!
I'd totally buy it if I didn't model N gauge. :p

Sam, I think Dapol intends - and I would *_strongly recommend_* - that you cut the hose bag to clear the tank/tender. Maybe just leave 10mm or so. ALTERNATIVELY: Replace the hose with a strip of very soft black cloth that you fold into a very thin tube. It should effortlessly slip across the tank/tender without straining the mechanism.
Yeah I'd want to keep the length - they were quite long in real life - just a more flexible material would do the trick! :D

hello sam i think that anyone that has a layout for train fairs should use this for realistic features and i think that next time you do something like this you should do a coal hopper and if i ever get a proper layout i would buy this and love the video from david

5:15 Careful Sam, there's a crack between the middle section of the Water Tower! I'd imagine it would be a disaster in real life if the Water Tower will fall down onto the track and hundreds of pieces will be everywhere! :O
haha I know - or it'd probably leak, at the very least ;)
Just thinking, the hose could've been done with either thinner plastic/rubber so it's more flexible, for an N Gauge water Tower kit I've done it used black tubular fabric while might be more obvious in OO it still looks decent while flexible.
Either way it's a lovely bit of scenery!

So dapol made something that had to be good, as it has no wheels or couplings, or rails for that matter to derail on. If they make some sort of LMS or LNER variant, they can have my money. Great review sam :)

you can always do what i do, with the wires make them look like overground pipework to fill up the water tower.
i got some wires that are painted off the points that is overground to a signal box.
lol "pirate" that is a bristol sort of accent as expected with GWR train drivers lol.
same sort of accent as "the wursles"
the chains are for holding the hose over the drain, and the chain on the top is to open the valve to dispense the water. usually a two man job.
as for the hose i would chance that to a little sleeve of silk. or a shoe lace
haha yes - quick and dirty, but it works! Yes I think those would work much better for the hose - I'll look at doing that! :D

haha I'm not certain, but they're probably as old as railways themselves - they're just a fast way of delivering lots of water in a short time. Without the tower, you'd be waiting ages using a regular hose with lower pressure!

With regards to the pipe, to prevent it hitting locos, you should be able to remove it, and it still looks pretty convincing, or you can cut the pipe to length.

A nice review, Sam. I'm personally not a fan of how the base and some of the details like the drain are just plain white. Personally I'd paint the base up a bit to make it look like concrete before popping it on a layout (if I had one anyway). Still a great product otherwise. The pipe movement reminds me of an Aardman animation for some reason.
Yes that's true - for realistic use, you would want to customise it - but I think the base was a compromise between accuracy and ease of use/assembly for everyone!

Nice accesory, not too expensive, easy to set up and use, and put some original fun on the layout. There is a possibility to have localized versions, with the proper accent (LNER York anyone ? ;-) ).
The only setback is the huge fixation prong below, but you had showed us it is not mandatory on this item. Dapol also have working signals with this huge fixation prong below, and that is a pity for be, because it is a no-go with my special type of layout : I have no permanent location in my home for a layout, and I have to use easy to set up and dismantle layouts. That means very low clearance below the surface, 50 mm/2in maximum, and surface-mounted items are a priority. For signals, the german brand Fleischmann manufactures german-style signals in HO and N with the control system besides the signal, which can be surface-mounted easily, nothing hangs below it. If they had, at lesat, put the motor horizontally, that would have been usable for people like me.
That's a pity manufacturers does not think of people with temporary layouts/trackmats when manufacturing their items. Fortunately, this water tower is usable, you can cut the prong below, which is not possible on the motirized signals from Dapol (the motor is in the fixation prong !)
