My life has been filled with work, family, joy, laughter and sorrow. I have regrets but much fewer than my city friends. And that is a blessing, too. Thank you Mr. Donnie. Brought back many memories. I went to a one room school house for my first 3 years. Learned much more than the bigger schools. We had a water pump out front and 2 toilets out back. Yep,fancy.. boys and girls.. lol. I hunted and fished with my brothers and Dad. My grandfather’s were all dead when I was little,lost all grandmothers by the time I was 17. Had a “surrogate” couple that babysat me and they were like grandparents. Like you,I learned so much from family and family friends. I eventually went to college (the only one of 6 kids) but I was in my early 30’s before I went. Wanted to be a nurse and in 1986 accomplished that goal with RN after my name. I am still a country kid at heart,live in the country with my dogs,chickens and a couple of ducks. Retired and old now,but still remember my childhood very fondly.
Growing up in the 80s and 90s, my family kept many of these traditions, but as the years moved on and the older generations left us, the traditions have almost gone away. Exactly, I was raised too, in 80s90s , today these kid's have no idea, how head it was back then, I remember my mom cutting wood and me and my brother helping getting inside before the winter comes, and mama used to heat up ice water up pot on the stove, too keep us warm,

So True Donnie....I,m just 50 and caught the tail end of the old ways from grandparents like you said..humble God fearing people that back then would pull together...even to this day on wife,s side of family from Roan Mtn. they will pull together and Hand dig the grave still when a loved one dies.Take care buddy.
My parents were both raised on dairy farms. Many similarities. I grew up in town, never witnessed "butchering" and had electricity. Still there were chores, Weeding the garden and flowerbeds, laundry day, ironing and when got older, helping Dad with projects. Sunday was going to Church and visiting the grandparents of one side or the other. Sassing and disrespect were not tolerated. 2 weeks out of every Summer were spent VBS. Wish would have payed better attention at family reunions. Just my Dad's sister, a sister-in-law and a couple of his cousins is all that remains of that generation. I'd say plenty of rural folks everywhere were raised this way. The only thing missing here was The Grange. It was a farmers' organization and a social center.

I remember my grandparents as being my heroes as I stayed with them as much as I could their house was where my parents lived when I was born so that was home to me. Many memories of my early years and not enough room to tell it here

This share-cropper's son saw the backs of mules, not tractors, but a good mule was worth more than its weight in money, and they all had personalities of their own, didn't they? Fascinating animals! My daddy had a special way with mules, and could get more out of them without abusing them than anybody else I ever knew. Everything you talked about in this video is like you're telling my story. I'm a baby boomer too, born, raised and still living in WV. I couldn't live anywhere I couldn't see mountains outside my door. Like you said, if you aren't from Appalachia, you don't understand how deeply our roots grow in the mountains of Appalachia.
Mr Donnie I couldn't agree more. Some of my fondest memories are with my granny at her house. No running water and an old coal cook stove and them biscuits and gravy and side meat. I miss that. Take care.

I agree with you 100% Mr. Laws! What a wonderful video. Brought back a lot of memories of my own childhood and how I was raised. I miss certain aspects about those times my own self. Many lessons that I was taught as a child, I raised my children the same way. It's a shame that so much of that good teaching we received back in those days seems to be gone now. Some of the dearest folks I have known didn't have a college education. But what they had in their hearts, no college education could ever hold a candle to. I just turned 50 .. i can remember exactly the pics you showed on this video .. i grew up in Claiborne Co Tn and some of those old houses look very familiar .. but i know some have ben remodeld some torn down so they wont look the same today .. thanks for the trip down memory lane Donnie
I watched this with my parents. I think it brought tears to all of us and brought back so many wonderful memories. Daddy even remembered and told me the story about when his Dad took him fishing and his Dad saved an old dog from drowning. I had never heard that story before. Wow Mr. Donnie...you never disappoint. Tho I wasn't raised in this area my grandma and many generations of my ppl lived in this area. (Christiansburg VA.) I grew up in the midwest but my grandma taught me the very things you talked about here....made a few tears come to my eyes. My husband and I got to take our 13 year old grandson to Virginia and Tennessee this past June and he got to see right where my grandma lived, he loved it!! By the way I have been gone for awhile and have to catch up on your videos as we are fighting my husbands cancer. This one hit home the most. I miss my grandparents and the simple way of life. I can remember grandma workin in the garden and stringin green beans and cannin. Grandpa was a retired coal miner and couldn't git around good. We all would sit at the table for all 3 meals. They passed when I was a young teen. Boy do I miss'em. Best video yet. Keep it up.

Seeing my grandmother cooking on her wood cook stove seems like a lifetime ago. I sure do miss that woman. I miss my mom, too. They were born and raised in the South. I didn’t get to live there too much, but I was born there. My mom made sure she raised me with all the good Southern values and traditions. This has to be my favorite video I have seen of yours so far. It brought back so many memories and sweet times growing up in East Tennessee. I’m like you, no matter where I have ever lived, those mountains call me and I never forget the time I spent there. I’m 78 years old and if I could, I would move back to East Tennessee. It’s really where my heart is. I was one of those kids that went to a two room school house. Such precious memories from that time! Thank you so much for posting this. It was absolutely beautiful! I smiled all the way through it.

I was born and raised in the country side. A small little town of only 700. I grew up there from late 60's, all through the 70's and into the 80's. We had no internet then, one rotary dial phone, and a tv with 3 channels. We played outside, worked helping out around the house. We had respect for our parents, authority and everyone else. We lived in a community that helped each other without question. Never locked our doors. Kids then grew up to be problem solvers, inventors. We had to learn things ourselves. Not from a little computer we now keep in our pocket.
If only we could go back home and relive those days again!!! I would choose the same family and the same places we lived!!! I wouldn't trade my upbringing with nobody in the world because money doesn't buy happiness!!! I would rather be poor and living in a cardboard box than to be rich and not care about other people!!! Heart and soul is what matters!!! Heart and Soul!!!!! We didn't have to worry about locking our doors! And people rally to help you in the Country!!! It didn't matter what color you was, it didn't matter where you were from, nothing mattered but your Heart and Soul! God I wish this world was like that now!!! You brought back a lot of memories Mr. Donnie, at 72 years old I can still remember being born and raised up in the hills of West Virginia, will most likely die here in these hills as well and that's Ok with me. Your recollections are spot on and oh how I miss my grandparents, parents and siblings. The things they taught me. I can only imagine how much better world we would have has we not gotten away from having that prayer and pledge of allegiance in our schools for the youngsters. I love these stories....takes me back home.....however I wasn't raised in the mountains I was raised in the country, my growing up wasn't any different really than people growing up in the mountain areas.
I used to live in a city with 21 million people in China and currently live in a city with around 30,000 people in the Bay Area in California. I randomly got recommended this video and it’s interesting to see how people have such a different life.

Everything you talked about in this video is like you're telling my story. I'm a baby boomer too, born, raised and still living in WV. I couldn't live anywhere I couldn't see mountains outside my door. Like you said, if you aren't from Appalachia, you don't understand how deeply our roots grow in the mountains of Appalachia.
Mr Donnie I couldn't agree more. Some of my fondest memories are with my granny at her house. No running water and an old coal cook stove and them biscuits and gravy and side meat. I miss that. Take care.

I agree with you 100% Mr. Laws! What a wonderful video. Brought back a lot of memories of my own childhood and how I was raised. I miss certain aspects about those times my own self. Many lessons that I was taught as a child, I raised my children the same way. It's a shame that so much of that good teaching we received back in those days seems to be gone now. Some of the dearest folks I have known didn't have a college education. But what they had in their hearts, no college education could ever hold a candle to. Love of God, family and your neighbors and pride in our country. My prayers are with you sir. God bless 🙏

I watched this with my parents. I think it brought tears to all of us and brought back so many wonderful memories. Daddy even remembered and told me the story about when his Dad took him fishing and his Dad saved an old dog from drowning. I had never heard that story before. Wow Mr. Donnie...you never disappoint. Tho I wasn't raised in this area my grandma and many generations of my ppl lived in this area. (Christiansburg VA.) I grew up in the midwest but my grandma taught me the very things you talked about here....made a few tears come to my eyes. My husband and I got to take our 13 year old grandson to Virginia and Tennessee this past June and he got to see right where my grandma lived, he loved it!! By the way I have been gone for awhile and have to catch up on your videos as we are fighting my husbands cancer. Please keep telling your stories, it takes us back to places and things we need to remember!!~Jodi

This one hit home the most. I miss my grandparents and the simple way of life. I can remember grandma workin in the garden and stringin green beans and cannin. Grandpa was a retired coal miner and couldn't git around good. We all would sit at the table for all 3 meals. They passed when I was a young teen. Boy do I miss'em. Best video yet. Keep it up.

Seeing my grandmother cooking on her wood cook stove seems like a lifetime ago. I sure do miss that woman. I miss my mom, too. They were born and raised in the South. I didn’t get to live there too much, but I was born there. My mom made sure she raised me with all the good Southern values and traditions. You can take the girl out of the South, but you can never take the South out of the girl.

This has to be my favorite video I have seen of yours so far. It brought back so many memories and sweet times growing up in East Tennessee. I’m like you, no matter where I have ever lived, those mountains call me and I never forget the time I spent there. I’m 78 years old and if I could, I would move back to East Tennessee. It’s really where my heart is. I was one of those kids that went to a two room school house. Such precious memories from that time! Thank you so much for posting this. It was absolutely beautiful! I smiled all the way through it.

I was born and raised in the country side. A small little town of only 700. I grew up there from late 60's, all through the 70's and into the 80's.
We had no internet then, one rotary dial phone, and a tv with 3 channels. We played outside, worked helping out around the house. We had respect for our parents, authority and everyone else. We lived in a community that helped each other without question. Never locked our doors.
Kids then grew up to be problem solvers, inventors. We had to learn things ourselves. Not from a little computer we now keep in our pocket.
Very touching and very true. I miss those old days.

If only we could go back home and relive those days again!!! I would choose the same family and the same places we lived!!! I wouldn't trade my upbringing with nobody in the world because money doesn't buy happiness!!! I would rather be poor and living in a cardboard box than to be rich and not care about other people!!! Heart and soul is what matters!!! Heart and Soul!!!!!
We didn't have to worry about locking our doors! And people rally to help you in the Country!!! It didn't matter what color you was, it didn't matter where you were from, nothing mattered but your Heart and Soul! God I wish this world was like that now!!! You brought back a lot of memories Mr. Donnie, at 72 years old I can still remember being born and raised up in the hills of West Virginia, will most likely die here in these hills as well and that's Ok with me. Your recollections are spot on and oh how I miss my grandparents, parents and siblings. The things they taught me. I can only imagine how much better world we would have has we not gotten away from having that prayer and pledge of allegiance in our schools for the youngsters.
