  • It's still one of my all-time favourite major championship finishes.
Hale Irwin claimed his third U.S. Open and in doing so, became the oldest US Open champion in history (a record still held today). Two years later, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
You can't help but feel for Mike Donald, the ultimate underdog, who came so close to winning. It would have changed his career forever. His mother passed away in 1991, he lost his tour card in 1993, and he never won another tournament.

Hale was totally rude to Mike Donald when Hale sunk the winning putt on the 19th hole of the playoff. He blew by Mike as if he didn't exist. TOTALLY RUDE!!!! I heard Hale was like that all his life. A narcissist.

Irwin. The man who tried to get away with an air shot putt in the British Open.

I watched this on tv. On the last par 5, here we see Norman playing his fourth out of a bunker. Prior to that, he had gone for the green in two with a 1-iron or such. When I saw him with that club out, I yelled at the tv as loud as I could, "Put that club away!" Sure enough, he blocked it out, into a jail lie in the trees, and the best he could do was get his third into the front bunker. Ensuing bogey, and his playing partner Irwin birdied the hole playing it the conventional way, and went on to win. This is another one of Norman's great lost opportunities in the majors. Golf writer Bob Drum once said of Norman that, under pressure, the head came off and the turnip went on. This was one of those times.
