Great DIY Project. You did a great job as a homeowner and as your first time. Not to be condescending at all but the 'proper' way is to use a belt sunder and then the random orbit sander afterwards. Most rental places will rent you a drum sander which will work as well. The downside of using a professional belt sander is they have a steep learning curve and it is easy to ruin a hardwood floor with one. There are good videos on how to refinish a hardwood floor if you want to attempt it. Just using a random orbit machine as featured in this video will do the job, it will just take considerably longer. The goal is to remove all finish from the wood and to flatten the wood. When done sanding, the wood should be completely flat and raw with no scratches or swirls from sanding. Use a microfiber mop that is barely damp to wipe up dust and sanding particles between grits. Once sanding is done, apply your filler per instructions in an even but thin coat with a trowel (10 inch would be a good start. Lightly sand the corners of the trowel so they are lighty rounded so the corners do not snatch the floor). Sand once more to remove excess filler and thoroughly mop. Then apply your finish per instructions. Again, great job in the video. I own a business and install and refinish hardwood for reference of may opinion above.
Thank you so much for this! I have a house-full of this same flooring, and while I love it, it's been neglected for years. Hiring someone to do this was going to be really expensive, but watching your video makes me think I might be able to tackle this job.
Two comments: I love that you give details like the size of the room the length of time it took you and how many sheets of each grit you used. Also love that you don’t verbally end every sentence with a question mark? Like so many people do? It’s so annoying? And really takes away from their video?😊
Omg I'm so happy I found your video. I just doing renovation in my flat and when i remove my carpet I was shocked because I've got same parquet as you've got . I called companies and they telling me price between £1000-£1500 😬 which i can't afford. But once i watch your video i think i will do it the same way as you done it 😊
Sadie, I found my two major “wish-to-do’s” on your channel! Thank you for doing these videos! I think there’s so much content out in TH-cam that it’s about the viewer enjoying the maker’s style plus I see you actually reply to people’s comments. Again, I admit I’m 🥶 w fears/anxieties but I hope to try this DIY stuff. -Seattle
Hi, we live on a boat with teak parquet floors. It's become very scratched as we do galley renos so I know there is a floor refinishing episode on our our own channel for us in the next 6 months! We find the teak overpowering in the cabin so our galley reno has minimized that a bit, but I'd like to underplay the teak colour on the floor if possible. Any suggestions on an oil product (as that is the best for teak) that won't necessarily deepen the almost-cherry colour of the teak? Thanks for this very straight-forward video.
I would look into using RubioMonocoat on the floors. It is hard wax oil based product and you can get it in lots of colors to help tint the teak to just the color you want. Or for a marine grade finish I would check with TotalBoat.com. Love lots of their products… not sure what they have for teak though. 🍊
@@TheAwesomeOrange Thanks I will check those out. One thing I've read about teak is that any "paint" gets in to the grain for teak and it becomes almost impossible to sand it out later. I'm still reading and learning but will follow up on your suggestions.
Thank you for uploading this video it's very useful & informative. I wanted to get my floor done but it would have cost me £400 pounds. So after watching your video i think I'll do it my self...
OMW - after looking at this video you have inspired me to do this myself - I used a company to do my parquet floors about 3.5 months ago and the finishing the put on resulted in bubbles ( last minute i decided to switch from waterbased to polyutherane and i so mad at myself) - told me it will dissipate but it didnt really and now now have a 50QM floor with areas that bubbles - so p**issed off I didnt want to deal with the company again and now i look at this i feel i can do it myself ! May I please ask - HOW LONG did the entire process take from sanding to final curing ? Super thanks - From South africa
Good question. I didn’t want to gunk up the sandpaper and make sure that I got all of the old finish off. Doing it in this order I could make sure the filler didn’t cover any of the old finish. 🍊
@@TheAwesomeOrange had you ever used a floor sander before? I haven’t. You did such an amazing job that it makes me feel that maybe it was possible for me but I am not a woodworker or such.
Maybe on camera, but in real life it was a huge improvement. The smoothness and gaps in the floor were fixed and the color tone was lightened to be less orangey but still natural. 🍊
I admire your handy work and effort but I don't recommend anybody refinishing parquet floors using this method. It would take too long and it's actually way easier and look way better if it's done with the right equipment.
Anthony Buday you've mentioned twice not to do it her way but you don't give a recommendation on another way? What's up with that. . . What's your recommendation?

Thank you for the advice, sir!!! 🙂
Thank you. I'm buying a house with parquet flooring and after reading your comment I'll hire a professional instead of trying to diy
Thanks a lot for this tutorial !!! Now is my time to work. Thanks from MVD Uruguay.
You’re welcome! Good luck on your project! 🍊
Great job. More work than I thought. I'm buying a rug.
Haha… thanks. It was a lot of work, but I felt it was worth it in the end. 🍊

They look fantastic! I love refinished wood floors, they have so much character!
Thanks! I am so pleased with how they turned out. 🍊
Beautiful flooring

Thank you! I love how the floors turned out. So much better. 🍊
Anthony Buday what would you recommend as another way to do this project since you’ve mentioned not to do it "her way"?
Could you please just tell me , was the sanding paper together with machine or you needed to buy separately ? Thank you
You buy the sandpaper separately. 🍊

It took about 2-3 days to complete. 🍊
I have parquet in the house I live in and most of the blocks were loose. I had to stick them all down again. I didn't sand it myself though.
I had a couple of the very edge by the closet that I had to do that with. But nothing major. I just love my floor so much now. 🍊
How much dust did it create?
Well done
Thank you! 🍊
Why not do the filling first and then sand it?
Good question. I didn’t want to gunk up the sandpaper and make sure that I got all of the old finish off. Doing it in this order I could make sure the filler didn’t cover any of the old finish. 🍊
What is the name of this parquet sander?
Thanks for posting. Too much work for me. Will look into pulling it all up and laying down new tiles to see if easier and less time consuming.
Was wondering the total time frame for the entire job...?
Probably 4 days. 1 day sanding, 1 day filling and sanding again, 1 day finish and 1 day trim. 🍊
she would sand the floor in the living room for more than a month 😉😁
Why didn’t you simply go over with a 120 and varnish. It looked fine!
Lots of voids that needed to be filled and I wanted the color a little less orange. 🍊
Surprised to see Rubio used on the floor. How's that holding up? Genuinely curious as it's not the most durable finish.
It’s holding up great. My understanding was Rubio started as a flooring finish and now people are using it on all woodworking like furniture. 🍊
Could you have gone dark or grey
Yup, they have a ton of colors to choose from. I wanted mine to look as natural as possible. 🍊
Can you rent out the machine?
Yes, I rented it from Home Depot. 🍊
@@TheAwesomeOrangepls did you hv to move out for some days?
@@efeyaachaa4870Just out of the room, but not the whole house. 🍊
Do you think a complete novice could do this, aka me?
Yes… because this was my first time doing it. 🍊
@@TheAwesomeOrange had you ever used a floor sander before? I haven’t. You did such an amazing job that it makes me feel that maybe it was possible for me but I am not a woodworker or such.
Yes but don't do it her way.
sweet dog is worried about her home! 🤔
decided to paint mine after watching this Lol. too much work!
Haha… It’s a lot of work, but not super hard. I think it was worth it. But I have seen some nice painted floors before. 🍊
@@TheAwesomeOrange my dear, you did a good job, but you could have finished all this in one day, believe me 😘
They look the same 😮
Maybe on camera but not in real life. The gaps and smoothness of the floor were a huge difference. And the color is just slightly different. 🍊
بارك الله فيك يا حسن
Floor looks great but I think you need to paint those wooden doors to completely freshen up the room.
Thanks! They are on the to-do list. 🍊
OHH MY GOD LOOK AT THE DOG ?
Thats how do it wrong
with so much work, you better change the flooring
Haha… nope! I love how it turned out. 🍊
Saw not much difference and after. Feels like a waste of time

@Anthony Buday What would you recommend instead?
Anthony Buday you've mentioned twice not to do it her way but you don't give a recommendation on another way? What's up with that. . . What's your recommendation?
Nice job but lucky that the room is small, otherwise the girl would have been sanding the floor for more than a year 🙈😂😂…
Haha… sanding sucks, but it was worth it when the floor were finished. 🍊
