    I can agree with Schweppes being best enjoyed without gin, just simply as a soda! When I was a kid, I saw my dad pour himself a G&T at a house party and wanted to try the tonic, as a joke he poured me a glass and gave it to me, expecting me to make a face from the bitter taste, but to his surprise I actually enjoyed it! It got to the point that he would have to hide tonic from me because I would drink it so often! To this day Schweppes tonic is my go-to soft drink of choice, especially during meals as its bitter profile goes well with most savoury foods!

    Great video, super informative! One point of correction though - Angostura bitters actually doesn't contain angostura bark extract. The bitters originated in the town of Angostura Venezuela, hence the name.

    A friend of mine told me about tonic water being the choice drink when people got maleria in Africa. She has Covid and the symptoms are close to that of maleria. She let me know it had the Quentin in it that helps. I went straight to YT to research. Thank you for this video. Now ,The problem is the sugar in the tonic water that should be avoided with anyone who has Covid! So which brand taste best by itself that also has a lower sugar content?

    My favorite tonic water is Britvic. It’s very clean and bright tasting. I can’t get it here in the states but I was introduced to a good G&T in London and when I want one I have to have Beefeaters with Britvic and a slice of lemon and lime. Unfortunately I have to import the Britvic tonic water. 24 bottles are about $20 USD PLUS $70 USD for shipping. 😩 Needless to say I have my “British” G&Ts sparingly. Otherwise, I drink Fever Tree but Kroger Supermarket makes a really good canned tonic water. The next time we’re in OZ I’ll have to try a Aussie G&T.

    • @TimandTonic
      @TimandTonic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha I’ve tried Britvic before too - previously I lived in London for 5 years. But don’t think I could ever justify $90 USD for a box of tonic 😅

    Gin & Tonic with a twist of lime is the best cocktail in the world. Must have proper proportions. Not too much gin. 1.5 ounces is perfect topped off with about 6 oz of tonic.

    • @yearginclarke
      @yearginclarke 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely not too much gin. Sometimes I pour an unmeasured amount of gin in, but I find that 1.5 oz is the best as far as taste goes. If I want more gin flavor, I'll just drink straight gin...which I actually do like the flavor of. But for the purposes of a G&T, the standard 1.5 oz of gin topped with tonic water can't be beat for me. One of the most refreshing drinks there is IMO.

    I usually drink the common brands of tonic water plain. It has a grapefruit-like flavor-taste (you can also mix it with unsweetened grapefruit juice for a spritzy summertime beverage-drink). Most drinks that claim to be "grapefruit-flavored" taste nothing like grapefruit.

  • @yearginclarke
    @yearginclarke 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I've tried a bunch of these different tonic waters we have available nowadays. I'm not really impressed by any of them, Fever Tree and the like. My favorite is just the regular Schweppes. However I've never heard of or even seen their "Indian" tonic water anywhere here where I live in northern California. I live roughly 100 miles south of the Oregon border, so in other words I don't live in the urban areas of California.
    Anyhow, I definitely love gin and tonic, especially on a hot day. One of the best drinks there is IMO, along with martinis (3:1 ratio for me) and also a traditional style whiskey old fashioned.

    Is there any positive health benefits drom drinking tonic water? I heard like and is it true that it is good vs tachycardia? And good for heart in general?

    • @TimandTonic
      @TimandTonic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NB/DISCLAIMER: Not medical advice, speak to a qualified health professional.
      There is definitely evidence to suggest that quinine, the main ingredient in tonic, has many potential medicinal uses as it has done in a historical context anecdotally too. The problem is a therapeutic dose I believe is not what is in tonic today so how much effect it has is highly questionable. As always best to speak to a medical professional about your specific circumstances.

    • @TimandTonic
      @TimandTonic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, yes tonic is supposed to have a fair whack of bitterness to it, that all comes from the quinine! Usually people mix it in long drinks with other ingredients like gin as that tends to balance out the bitterness a bit. Bitterness is certainly an acquired taste!
