The Arks of Omen have sown terror and death from one side of the galaxy to the other. Despite the efforts of those who opposed them, their masters have gathered enough arcane artefacts for Vashtorr the Arkifane to fashion his monstrous Key. The hour draws nigh when the daemon and the Despoiler will between them awaken this engine of terrible power.
There are still those who can oppose their dark plan. Chief amongst them are Supreme Grand Master Azrael and the many Unforgiven Chapters who fight beneath his banner. Gathering their might, the Dark Angels and their successors answer the Arkifane’s challenge, hoping to quell whatever malevolence he and Abaddon seek to unleash. Nor are they alone in their quest, for Commander Dante races to lead his Blood Angels - and countless other Imperial forces - to the coming battle.
For all these grand events, none can compare to the return of a demigod long thought lost to the annals of legend. Lion El’Jonson, Primarch of the Dark Angels, has awoken, and by strange paths has returned to aid the Imperium in its darkest hour. Will the Lion triumph, or will the champions of Chaos unleash a new and nightmarish force upon the galaxy?

I'm really hoping the Harlequins found a way to imprison the Khan in the vault. It would be interesting to see them "team up" with the Khan and also appease the Laughing God by playing the best joke they can on Chaos. To me, it would be a great way to add lore to both the Imperium and Harlequins. I doubt that that's what will happen, but it would be so cool.

chaos needs humanity to survive and knows how bad tyranids are, so honestly seeing how they put seeds in motion with the primarchs i cant see why those plans would stop with the horus herasy and they could be of good use alive rn to keep humanity alive to keep the warp alive
My take as an avid DA fan is that the forest walk is the watchers ‘giving’ their power to him. They where the guardians of the key that is a webway making device. They exist outside of time as shown in the dreadwing book. They are able to disappear and appear at will and now they are letting the Lion do the same.

I don’t know too much of the watchers lore, but I figured the connection was more to do with the psychic awakening and Lion becoming more in tune with his warp power like Corvus did in the warp. I like your theory as well!

My favorite thing that happens in the book is when Lion goes from thinking "i should have trusted Guilliman during the heresy, if I had maybe we could have worked together better and saved the emperor. I really messed up with how i treated my brothers" to two pages later finding out about the Codex Astartes and immediately going on a massive "fuck you Guilliman!!!!" rant

Is it a hot take that the Codex was a good idea? Because the Codex was a good idea.
The third line from the excerpt ("I do not wish to fail my sons") makes sense in context with the Lion offering forgiveness to any non-Chaos corrupted Fallen seeking redemption. Lion is opting to do the rare thing that happens in 40K -- being a good Dad.
He brought the Best anti chaos weapon, a good parent figure (tts gone but beber forgotten)
Also he Is honoring his name since lions are really protective of their offspring.

@@jordinagel1184 It's a bit more nuonce than that, although is true that female lions generally are better parents than the male conterparts as well as being the ones that provide for the pack, when rival male lions come to the territorry they try to kill the cubs to mate with the females there is were the males of the pack come in place to fight the rivals to defed their cubss, witch is more or less what Jonhson did in the books vs Angro, and there are male lions that play with their offprings if a bit rought at times.

Vashtor speaking to Abaddon about the war in heaven and the key-lock being possibly a time travel device- vashtor wants to go back to when the necron weaponry that can shatter gods existed (necrons destroyed them) and use them himself. The eldar haven't responded because they know Vashtor's goal and the "lock" is in commorragh- one of the oldest aeldari bastions. And how does Vashtor get his hands on the lock? "Hey, drukhari- I'm going to kill slaanesh if you give me that thing over there"
Vashtor secretly being Ynnead or an ally of him would be a brilliant plot twist

The 40K fallen where planning to use the engine bring a army into 40K from 30k , and Azrael told the engine to break the connection, that break cased the breaking of Caliban and the scattering of the fallen over time and space

@@zevriungames7463 yes, Typhus was there too working with the fallen but did not know the full plot , just the tuchalta engine was on the rock, some the Lion took before he could during the heresy

Not only is he forgiving his sons, one of the Fallen in Son of the Forest is strongly hinted to be mutated by the warp, as this Legionary refuses to remove his armour in front of anyone and his voice is described as pretty unique.
He's also got a cool name as he's known as "The Red Whisper".
DK would probably enjoy the Fallen in Son of the Forest very much.
Theres also at least 21 Risen so far.
I highly Recommend the Audiobook.
Also like 3 or 4 of them are Rangdan Veterans and among the Oldest Generations of Space Marines, I was suprised how many of them we're Terran Veterans from the earliest Years of the Great Crusade.
The Lion is also nerfed, in the Son of the Forest Book, the Lion feels slow and weak, he feels less powerful than he was, either because of his age or something else he hasnt realized yet.
Pre-Daemon Angron vs 30K Lion wouldnt have been a contest, Lion would have bodied Angron, full strength Lion would have had a lot of trouble with Daemon Angron but wouldnt have needed to rely on the shield as much.
Angron is Leman without any control or skill, Lion mentions when fighting some Khornates in the Son of the Forest, that a lack of self preservation has its advantages, but it also has its weaknesses, that the Lion is all too happy to exploit.
To be fair, he had spent the past 10k years in a coma. You can even say that the Son of the Forest book was essentially him going through rehab in order to get back into the swing of things.
@@patrickmcginty3234 Oh yea absolutely, but I dont think it ever says anything to suggest he's recovered from that or feels re-invigerated or anything, so either the shield gave him his full strength back and thats how he could win against Angron, or he beat Angron while still not being at his peak.
I do hope he can get back to his peak, along with his tabletop rules.
@@LCliffhanger It might have been the later. But then again, the Lion was always more of a work smarter, not harder type of fighter (on the more tactical level rather than the strategic level like Guiliman).

The Son of the forest book is really good. I've only gotten into the post cadia books recently, but I didn't feel lost reading the book lore wise.
I feel like alot of the pre heresy Lion's personality is still there. But throughout the book he's basically just "Let me stop and consider the best way to do/say this". Also loved how he was roasting Konrad and Roboute.
The redeemed are pretty hilarious.
Big theory:
The final vault will be Vulkan's Engine of Woes.... And right as Vashtor is about to unlock it, a Jamaican style accented Orky voice will call from the shadows

I believe that the vault that Vashtorr is trying to open will grant him the power to become the Fifth Chaos God and with his ascension we’ll start to see Iron Warriors, Dark Mechanicum, and just some Vashtorr devoted Chaos Cults. That would be sick if it happens.

@43:43 ohhh... It's that boy from Gaven Torp's book "The Lion". He was the key all along. The boy that interfaced with an ancient machine.
Maybe the lock Vashtorr is looking for in the webway is in the Black Library or its location is stored in it, the one that holds all the knowledge of the eldar and is guarded by the Harlequin.
The lion is sounding more and more like a dark souls boss literally teleporting behind you and saying "nothing personal"
Would strongly recommend Lion: Son of the Forest for the next book club. I literally read it all in a single day and it was excellent. Reading about how he thinks, fights and the rationale he is approaching the galaxy with is great. It's a lot less 'kill them all' then we expected but that nuance really adds to his character. Also, the Fallen/Risen in that book are absolute legends. Zabriel especially is great as the Lion's unofficial second.
Vashtor is gonna go back in time and prevent big E getting so messed up, so he doesn't need to be in the golden chair. That way he has 1 less to compete with to become a 5th god.

So the Lion's power is he can go missing in a forest like a 411 story to pop up somewhere he shouldn't have been able to go.
Also the Caliban forests were destroyed long before Caliban was, whatever space he is in is likely more related to the Watchers in the Dark
My take as a dangles fan is the redeemed are such a cool plot idea and a great chance to have a mix of modern dark angels and 30k dark angels paint schemes

I think this is my favorite so far solely because it has a major leading character, a Primarch no less, doing the one thing that nobody ever does in warhammer: forgive. Everybody tracks their debts, their wrongs, their enemies. The Lion has done the one thing nobody expected anyone to do, and that is forgive. Its beautiful and i love it and it really fits the image of the og dark angels being "knights" with honor and loyalty. Something thats often forgotten about loyalty is that sometimes, you have to stay loyal to someone you not only disagree with, but may have not stayed loyal to you. Yes, draw the boundaries and push back, but youre loyal to who they were and the loyal knight they were, offering a helping hand in returning them to the seat they once occupied. It should be with great regret and remorse that a loyal knight kills a once loyal knight, as now that seat will never be filled the same again. Its forever changed.
Yes the Lion is a predator and a feral man, but he also understands loyalty and its true meaning. Loving the redeemed.
I am happy about the Fallen story considering my entire Dark Angels army that are loyalists are Fallen and painted in their colours.
I get the feeling DA fans prefer the 30k colors over the 40k colors

Been a Dark Angels fan for a while, the whole thing with the Risen is probably the best thing to happen.

I imagine that the vault contains the very thing that the Old Ones used to create new life forms, and Vashtor getting his mitts on that would spell doom for everything.

I mean, what are the odds that the "vault" is the black library? In lore its hidden in the webway, and its a forbidden repository of knowledge on the warp, if V-dog wants to become the 5th chaos God, then that's where he's gonna attain the knowledge to achieve that.

@@cncmne7404 Nah, last book club episode is them finding Master of Mankind so boring (maybe because they used audiobook instead of reading with their eyes) that they focused on their own biases against The Emperor on the book that is (somewhat) focused on the guy so they came off as Chaos shills.

How do you miss the point that badly when even Bricky described that an Inquisitor is wondering why and how the Eldar hasn't tried to stop Vashtorr even once.
@@seeingseeer5282 Sure , audiobooks cannot really send the point of the Emperor being what others see him as , but then again it was written by ADB who has himself said that he hates the Emperor to the degree of self harm in some sense. As for the other , its DK , cut him some slack. He probably shifted all his focus on the Imperium vs Chaos fight since that is what the book is about so the implications of Chaos breaching the Webway went over his head.

Why the Eldar did nothing? Unlikely theory. This is Cegorach's joke on Slanesh and Chaos. They went into the webway where Cegorach planned to net this thing directly into the realm of Slanesh so the Ynarri can grab the last sword.

I wouldn't say Chaos wins, 'cause Vaashtor is in it for himself AGAINST the Chaos God's. I'd say it's just Vaashtor/Abadon win. I imagine that whatever Vaashtor is after, will majorly fuck with the Chaos Gods.
What would be hilarious, is that the vault was filled with nothing but Jokaeros in stasis. Cause that's just what the Old Ones would do.
Interesting detail for Vashtorr. He asked the AI on the AdMech world for consent and whether it wants to help him, same now with the Engine. He recognizes certain machines that are powerful enough as their own being, a rare thing in 40k
Old man Lion did pretty much body him. Angron hit him with a tank. That was the only good hit he got. Lion’s old man stamina was his biggest problem.

A large part of me is thinking that whatever is in that vault is what will allow Chaos to make new Chaos Space Marines, since that is kind of their biggest problem right now.

I look at forest walk like the skavens teleport in fantasy a deux ex machina power that allows the character to be where the writer wants them.
Dk is missing the context that this was seen coming for a while and the lions coming back a better man was very anticipated by dark angels players
They may as well have slapped "Vashtorr will return" on that ending. I'm immensely intrigued.
Based off of Bricky's description, seems like the Lion has a reality marble and uses that to travel.
What if that threat is enough to get empirium and xenos and chaos to fight them off while still infighting while trying to coordinate forces. Treason is palpable in the air but what can you do when all you see is teeth and claws
Azrael and Ezekiel are the only two that know that they had effected the battle of caliban. They tried closing the warp rift that lead back into the past by sending nephilim fighters to try and overload it by basically blowing it up. They succeeded. But the resulting explosion caused the warp storm that finished off caliban. All this takes place in the legacy of caliban trilogy book 3 called 'The Unforgiven' if anyone is interested.
I can't help but feel like Vashtor is going to run into some trouble with the Druhkari, the elves who can shoot literal black holes at people.
Ok, my theory (and I want evidence to see if I'm right later): The device is a god-maker, either the essence of a c'tan or something of the sort. Vashtor said he was aiming for a 5th chaos god spot, so what he's looking for is either something to make him a god, or something to get rid of the others (unlikely). This expedition into the webway is going to cost resources, so the Eldar are probably going to wait until the chaos forces reach their goal, and then swoop in and steal it (that wy, they don't expend their own limited resources. And since we're on the webway, I think the next primarch will be coming... very, very fast.
TLDR: Chaos is looking for a god-maker device, Eldar are waiting to steal it at the last second, next primarc has to go fast

Correction: Guilliman and Lion talking is not in Lion: Son of the Forest. That has yet to happen tmk. Also, the Risen havent been around for 10k years, theyve been around for a couple hundred years tops because they were randomly spit out of the warp at different times, with the Lion being the most recent
