  • Coyote hunting has officially been taken to the next level by O'Neill Ops using precision rifles and the top thermal scopes from Trijicon EO. This video includes one-of-a-kind night hunting footage of 50 coyote dirt naps filmed directly through the eyepiece of the Trijicon IR Hunter MKIII 60mm, REAP-IR, and the IR Patrol M250 XR.
    The guys of O'Neill Ops have pioneered the art of predator hunting suppressed and they are building on that experience by pushing the envelope at night. As 4th generation ranchers and farmers, hunting coyotes is not just a hobby or a pastime for them. They have a duty to protect the cattle that they raise for food.

    **Why hunt coyotes?**
    Coyotes are presently the most abundant livestock predators in western North America, causing the majority of sheep, goat, and cattle losses. For example, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, coyotes were responsible for 60.5% of the 224,000 sheep deaths attributed to predation in 2004.The total number of sheep deaths in 2004 comprised 2.22% of the total sheep and lamb population in the United States, which, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA report, totaled 4.66 million and 7.80 million heads respectively as of July 1, 2005.
    Because coyote populations are typically many times greater and more widely distributed than those of wolves, coyotes cause more overall predation losses. The United States government agents routinely shoot, poison, trap, and kill about 90,000 coyotes each year to protect livestock.
    Coyotes typically bite the throat just behind the jaw and below the ear when attacking adult sheep or goats, with death commonly resulting from suffocation. Blood loss is usually a secondary cause of death. Calves and heavily fleeced sheep are killed by attacking the flanks or hindquarters, causing shock and blood loss. When attacking smaller prey, such as young lambs, the kill is made by biting the skull and spinal regions, causing massive tissue and bone damage. Small or young prey may be completely carried off, leaving only blood as evidence of a kill.
    In the absence of the harassment of coyotes practiced by rural people, urban coyotes are losing their fear of humans, which is further worsened by people intentionally or unintentionally feeding coyotes. In such situations, some coyotes have begun to act aggressively toward humans, chasing joggers and bicyclists, confronting people walking their dogs, and stalking small children. Non-rabid coyotes in these areas sometimes target small children, mostly under the age of 10, though some adults have been bitten.

    I love this video. A few years ago we lost 14 goats in one night. Our heard is only 40. They only ate 2. Was like they were teaching pups how to hunt or just killing for killing. Have hated coyotes ever since. I’ve shot a few but a proper night vision rig would be amazing, hopefully some day we can budget for one. Great video!

      Joseph Pedulla not a stupid idea however the rabbits are a pest on most farms as they dig burrows that can break a cow or larger animals leg of it gets stuck as well as they eat the same food as the livestock. So they are competing with (on the farm where I am at least) the cows and goats. So we keep the rabbit numbers down as best we can (I don’t waste any. I collect all of the ones I shot and clean them and eat them).
      This is my second TH-cam where I’m beginning to show some of my air rifle pesting and such. The first account above is my primary TH-cam but in case anyone had questions about air rifle pesting if coyotes or other pests can ask here. I have just a few videos up as just working out a way to record my pest control hunts. I do however have some early clips at dairy barns as well as a how to clean birds for beginners by beginners videos. 😀👍🏻

    • @hansbrackhaus8017
      @hansbrackhaus8017 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Indeed, it's commendable to not rush a shot. Bullets are quite small, even the big ones (unless we go ludicrous, of course) and there's gravity, wind, etc, and the fact that the exit of the gun is basically on a lever, as in, it's quite far away from the trigger, so even a little bit of shake there can translate to quite a veer.
      You can have surgeon hands and complete breath control and things can still get buffeted by a gust, the animal can still change posture, etc, so yeah, it requires a lot of skill and is certainly a lot more difficult than a videogame.
      The gear also helps with landing shots, and it's why I fully support efforts in making hunting equipment better and better. Every iteration that improves accuracy and killing power is a step toward a swift end to the animal, reducing suffering.
      The thrill of the shot and the hunt remains. So it's a win win situation.

    The guy practically lived with his herd during calving season; all he did was shoot coyotes with his 30-06 for days on end. It's been 45 years, but I think he would have been tickled pink to have such night vision gear.

    This is some of the best dog footage I've ever seen. Kudos! Some people don't realize how smart and clever coyotes are. They are becoming habituated to humans in cities. Currently, we hear of 1-2 children per year carried off, this will soon double every year as they become more city wise. This is an animal that must be persecuted relentlessly in country and city, or they will cause untold grief.

      A breeding pair of coyotes will stake out and defend a territory. If unmolested, a breeding pair will have pups and form a pack of up to 10 individuals. Each pack has a dominant breeding pair. Other adults are behaviorally “sterile” and do not breed.
      This has implications for coyote control, because in areas with heavy coyote mortality, these typically “sterile” females are released and can breed.
      In addition to pack members, there are always random individuals known as floaters, which usually do not maintain a territory but are available to breed if the dominant breeders are killed. These floaters form a reservoir of replacement breeders should a breeding coyote be killed.
      In addition to these behavioral controls on breeding, in unexploited coyote populations that are near the saturation point in terms of food availability, many pups die of starvation and never reach maturity. In exploited populations, a greater number of pups will survive into adulthood, often negating any losses from Wildlife Services’ control efforts.
      A further limit on coyote livestock predation is due to learned behavior. Coyotes, like most predators, are reluctant to sample “new” food. If they are not preying upon livestock, they are unlikely to begin. However, in exploited populations, young orphaned coyotes must fend for themselves and in desperation will prey upon livestock and become livestock killers.
      To be successful at reducing coyote populations, a minimum of 70 percent of the population must be killed on a sustained basis. That is almost never achieved, and a vacant territory is quickly filled by floating individuals, or by a nearby pack.
      Furthermore, due to extreme competition for food and territories, there are compensatory mechanisms that quickly repopulate any vacant space.
      First, more females breed. Second, due to reduced competition for food, a greater percentage of pups survive and mature into adults. Finally, in exploited populations, female coyotes breed at a younger age. All those mechanisms ensure that coyote numbers seldom decline for any significant period.
      Livestock grazing can also lead to more coyote predation by reducing cover for the preferred prey of mice and voles, which results in lower small-mammal populations.
      Exploited coyote populations also have fewer adults in a pack to feed pups, thus are more likely to attack the easier prey available-which often is domestic animals.
      In the end, the only alternative that is effective is nonlethal measures such as guard animals, corralling livestock at night and herding. Indeed, in some California counties, tax dollars that previously went to Wildlife Services were used for nonlethal methods, resulting in lower predation losses and lower costs.
      It’s time to put the Wildlife Services killing machine out of business, and to put more responsibility upon ranchers to manage their animals in a way that reduces predator opportunity.

    It is amazing how many are talking about the length of time he waits to pull the trigger.
    I have to wonder how many have been behind a scope at night. Also we don't know the range he is shooting with each shot. Plus he is in a field with livestock, and houses in the area. That bullet is not going to just stop after hitting the target. Being sure your on target and making sure it's safe behind is a big part of it.
    Keep doing what your doing, the way your doing. Safe and humane shots are more important than just pulling the trigger quickly.

    • @stoopingfalcon891
      @stoopingfalcon891 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as range is concerned, obviously the shooter will wait for as short a range as he can get, but I believe that the average range is anywhere from about 40 to 100 yards. Not an easy target even at short ranges for such a small animal, and that's the main reason for the wait for each shot, to ensure as quick and as clean a kill as they can get. Using a scope at night is not as easy as the videos make it appear, a simple shift in temperature can throw the image out enough to miss the shot, and that can be pretty frustrating. Just a few thoughts on your comment :)
