I moved here 10 years ago from Orlando. Grew up in New York State, spent my early adult life in Huntsville AL, and visited on and off out here from the early 1980s as my parents moved here to work Hanford. Back in my earlier days of visiting, I HATED this place. Mostly because I wasn't used to the desert and there wasn't anything here for a 20+ year old. Now, I can't imagine living anywhere else. Since moving out here I absolutely love it compared to all the places I've lived. Traffic is never a problem. If you think so, go stay in Orlando for a while and try to get anywhere in less than an hour or without wanting to own a gun or a Hummer for safety. The weather is perfect compared to other places I've been. Yes, it gets hot. But, dry heat is better than 90% humidity and even 80° temps. That is stifling and suffocating. Glen is dead on about the people here. Though we've grown leaps and bounds and show no signs of stopping, the people here are extremely friendly and helpful. During that "snowmogedon" there were neighbors I didn't hardly know that used their snow plow or snowblower to clear my driveway. The sun is intense here but so many people are putting up solar power which will probably pay for itself in less than 10 years. The utilities are one of the lowest areas in the US also. I own a duplex here and the only time it was vacant was when I chose to keep it vacant. It's still a seller's market here so if you have the opportunity, buy and rent. For those that like to gamble, there's Legend's 45 minutes drive and Wildhorse 1.5 hours away. Local gambling is available but it's strictly card tables. For more entertainment you can always make a day trip to Seattle which is about 3 hours away. Glen is also dead on concerning irrigation. It's a must with little rainfall and intense sun. If you're not careful, you will be overrun with invasive weeds like Goat-heads (Tribulus terrestris) which can puncture bicycle tires. You have to wear special gloves to pick them without them sticking relentlessly to your hands. And they HURT. Life finds a way in this area and that's not always good. I prefer to grow succulents even outdoors because they flourish with little effort from me. All that said, I don't want to encourage anyone to move here. It's a secret and we like to keep it that way ;-)
I was born in Seattle and lived most of my life there, but spent my junior high through high school years in Richland. Now I'm back to take care of my aging mom. It's a place. It has changed a lot, but still it's the same. For families, I will say the public school I went to, Hanford, is one of the best schools in the country, and that includes the private schools. Also if science is your thing, the opportunities are endless. If you have teenagers they will be bored out of their gourds.
Thank you for sharing. I am considering to move there. I am living in South Korea. Been here for the last seven years Teaching English. Originally from Southern California and Eugene Oregon. I am a social worker who hopefully can land a job in Tricities . Will be moving back in April Anyways, enjoy your channel.
Hi Jon! I remember seeing a comment from you on a previous video. Thanks for the kind words! Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. I'd love to help find you a home if you decide to move this way.
I’m from Wisconsin and I really like this area . One thing I have seen is people say the drivers are just absolutely horrendous in the tri cities. What is your experience with this? There is even a Facebook page dedicated to the bad drivers in the area and I’ll admit it does seem quite awful at times.
Hi there! I have seen the bad driver shaming page. Just from my own observation, bad drivers don't come to mind as a major concern to me. There are good drivers and bad drivers anywhere. I will say that there are some people here that do not respect snow. "I have a lifted F150 that can handle ice just fine" type stuff. But, I have a friend in insurance and he says the roads are actually pretty safe compared to other areas. We do have among the cheapest auto insurance rates in the state. Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland all made this list: wallethub.com/answers/ci/which-city-in-washington-has-the-least-expensive-auto-insurance-premiums-2140762148/#answer=2140697565
Thanks for the timely response, I love my car and don’t want anybody running into it! This does alleviate some concern. Something is definitely calling me to eastern Washington. Tri cities will remain the top of my list.
Wow. I just watched this. I was born in Pasco.Ive lived in all 3 towns plus Benton City. Literally there is very little to do. Go on hikes if dodging rattle snakes is fun. Go walk out indoors at the mall where most stores are empty. Windy maybe not everyday but I'll let truth be told 350 days out of the year almost Ellensburg Windy. Trees some in people's yards off limits. Howard Amon park is decent during Spring early summer. Teens - 2o zero to do. Adult entertainment drugs or alcoholism #1 entertainment. All 3 cities have been overrun with ghettos in real people's salaries. Under 60k a year hard to get rental apps. I still have family there. Old brothers. It's a great place to move away from. You showed the only activities that include polluted Columbia River. Where when I was born Hanford dumped heavy water and plutonium into the river. That's why in the 1970s they closed down the lagoon and the park. Still can't eat the fish nor swim safely in the Rivers. It's a horrible pit and I'm so happy I left there.
Yeahhh, um the *entire point* of the Handford project was to _extract_ plutonium and as much as possible to fuel the Cold War arms race. That shit is omega expensive to produce. They weren't losing a single gram of it by flushing it into the river. You're also talking about events from about 70 years ago in the ENORMOUS and quick flowing Columbia. The real worry is the state of degrading Handford waste tanks, which are monitored like crazy now that we have a decent understanding of the risks of radiation. Don't get me wrong, the water is pretty gross and the Tri-Cities itself is a shithole where the American dream of having extreme poverty and exorbitant wealth shoulder-to-shoulder with no intention of bringing the difference between the two down is very much alive. I just think its myriad of bad qualities can stand on their own as is without inaccurate demegogery. You didn't even mention what dogshit civil infrastructure we have! Or how the city of Pasco doesn't seem to like *_do_* anything with the taxes it collects? Or that the very prospective Uptown Center in Richland is falling to pieces and looks like shit because the landlord up-charges the renters to high heaven without reinvesting any of that money back into the buildings. Or that drivers here simultaneously want to kill you AND have a death wish of their own (made worse by the _again_ absolutely asinine roads our proud civil engineer WSU grads come up with.) Or how the aforementioned WSU Tri-Cities campus has all its funds sucked away by the LEECH which is the Pullman campus 3 hours north, so despite it being in the heart of dozens of engineering firms, mostly nuclear focused, it doesn't have a nuclear program at all and _barely_ has a mechanical engineering one which it doesn't put any money into because it can't even pay for building maintenance to keep the facilities from crumbling to dust. Or the fires. Or the 103 degree summers. Or being called "puta" on the street for no apparent reason because the 9 to 1 ratio of Hispanic highschool kids fucken hate your guts for just walking into the donut shop and you're like "what dah hell, _I'm literally just a guy??"_ Or that Kennewick... well, Kennewick just doesn't really have anything to say about it really. It's largely unnoteworthy with exception of the rich fucks on the hills and all the shopping centers there. A different kind of hellscape in its own right, I suppose.
Do you know what heavy water actually is? I am also a 63 year old that grew up in Richland, WA (one of the Tricities, WA). My Science credentials are PhD Physics coursework at PURDUE UNIVERSITY and I completed my B.S. in PHYSICS and B.S. in CHEMISTRY from WHITWORTH UNIVERSITY Spokane, Wa. I worked 34 years at the PACIFIC NORTHWEST LABORATORY as a STAFF SCIENTIST and I won 2 International R&D awards for Ionizing Radiation detectors including a Radiation Detector worn by HOSPITAL WORKERS and DOCTORS and CANCER DOCTORS. I am well versed in all things Ionizing Radiation and Nuclear Reactors. We actually measured Radiation exposure levels in operating Nuclear Power Plants all over the UNITED STATES! Heavy water is regular H2O with most of the hydrogen being deuterium. Deuterium is hydrogen with one neutron in the nucleus! Deuterium is natural as is heavy water, or D2O , but it's very rare because most hydrogen is just one proton hydrogen with no neutrons in the nucleus but a small percentage is deuterium hydrogen!! About the dumping, heavy water is mind-boggling EXPENSIVE and just a gallon is tens of millions of dollars to produce!! There is no FIGGEN WAY they would just dump it in the Columbia River because it's so incredibly EXPENSIVE to produce. That said, if you did dump a few gallons of heavy water into the Columbia River where MILLIONS OF GALLONS FLOW per second past an invisible planar cross sectional area the heavy water would be IMMEDIATELY DILUTED by all the water and would not cause ANY HEALTH PROBLEM WHATSOEVER!! If you have a glass of heavy water it is toxic to drink, because your ENZYMES work with protiens that have mostly regular hydrogen and deuterium rich environment with heavy water would disrupt your life processes it's true, but once you dump the gallons of heavy water into the Columbia River it becomes harmless because it gets diluted MASSIVELY!! You mentioned dumping Radiation directly into the Columbia River. This never happened INTENTIONALLY but through some slight leaks in Radioactive Waste barrells produced during WW2 HANFORD PLUTONIUM production, a small amount of ionizing radiation did leach into the Columbia River. Again DILUTION is the SOLUTION to POLLUTION and the slight leaching CANNOT EVEN BE MEASURED by our excellent Radiation detectors , some of which, I developed to measure vehicles carrying small amounts of Radiation Isotopes in a vehicle speeding through a US BORDER CHECKPOINT!! We can literally detect one single radioactive decay of one radioactive atom!! My best friend I salmon fish with on the Columbia River is a Native American and he worked on boats for the NATIONAL LABORATORY in monitoring the Radiation levels of plants next to the Columbia River near the leaching points and downstream to the TRICITIES and he sampled Columbia River water with local NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBAL members INSIDE his National Laboratory BOAT and they have NEVER MEASURED Radiation levels that are above the guidelines for safety and they cannot find any Radiation levels above the normal Radiation levels of Columbia River water 200 miles UPSTREAM of the COLUMBIA RIVER near the headwaters of the Columbia River!! TOTALLY SAFE IN OTHER WORDS!! Radioactivity is the biggest fear of people that don't understand it, but truth be told HANFORD RADIOACTIVITY ISN'T GOING TO KILL ANYONE, but drugs, cigarettes, over-eating processed foods will kill you RAPIDLY!! ALL THE BEST...
Could #9 be due to ppl with an agenda 🤔....I am considering moving out one day to be in a relatively dry place but within a doable drive to family in Enumclaw... my daughter loves soccer, is that a big thing out there? We're in San Diego. Thanks
Hi there! As far as the school ratings go, it's hard to say. If seen plenty of criticism of Great Schools and how they get their rankings. Soccer is popular here. My kids don't play, but I have friends with kids that play in local leagues and traveling teams.
I graduated from Chiawana in ‘21, and girls soccer in our district (Tri/Spokane) always had some of the best teams in the state. Districts happened to be the top 5 teams in the state so it was pretty much “state” so yes girls soccer is extremely competitive here
If you don't want to live in complete clouds and rain from November to February, I would think twice about the Tri Cities. Also, it will cost you around 400K for a starter home. This place is not for me.
R.I.P. to that Pasco school bus driver that got stabbed to death for quite literally no reason at all. Or the Fentanyl laced 100 dollar bills on car windshields for human trafficking schemes which seems to have come into fashion recently.
REMEMBER HE GETS PAID TO SELL HOUSES HERE!!!!!! NO SALE NO $$$$ SO HE CAN RETIRE TO SOMEWHERE BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!! MOST AGENTS WOULD SELL YOU A PLACE IN HELL IF THE COMMISSION WAS GOOD!!!!
@@memphisrainezzz ehh, that one I don't know about the voracity of really. As a Midwesterner visiting the area, I felt it was very similar to the Midwest but with a lot more direct influence from Mexico and Canada.
That explains the southwest architecture I thought I was seeing. Mm

Many sports teams for kids to become part of
Snowing here is weird. It was only here for like 2½ weeks in 2022 and 2021 it was here for about a month or so on two different occasions. Haha
