I played French horn in junior and senior high school. That ended over 50 years ago but I still love the sound of a Horn.
As a horn player of ~8 years, I highly approve of this message. Let us indoctrinate the youth so that there may be a future where all four horn parts in a band may have a corresponding player!
I’m a sixth grader and I chose the French horn as my instrument for the band. I don’t regret it.

The French Horn is undoubtedly one of the most prominent orchestral instruments that is SO SOOTHING but a critical part of the music.
At age 11 my school music teacher, Lt. Col. Sam Rhodes former Senior Director the Guards Division, and Director of Music of the Scots Guards, introduced me to the glorious sound of the french horn. Sadly my parents couldn't afford to buy me one, and I knew it, so I kept quiet. I still love the sound, but at 71 years of age I'll never play myself.
Stephen! Never give up on your dream! Find out if there is New Horizons Band program anywhere near you, and go for it! I am the director of a great chapter of NHB, and 71 is young! Many of my musicians learned to play through NHB, and you can, too!

Talk about a long name or nickname
It is never too late. Most larger towns and cities have community bands whose members would be of enormous help. After playing clarinet for 53 years, I’m switching to French Horn. My fellow community band members are very helpful, plus many concert and marching pieces are on TH-cam in a key you can play along with, in key, which is extremely helpful for practicing alone. You can do this. Plus I found a used French Horn on Facebook marketplace for $100!!! And a good used trumpet for $130!!! I say go for it because you’ll never regret it.
I played rock and metal for almost 30 years and only now I'm suddenly fascinated with the French horn.
Antti Martikainen is a one man composer/musician that loves combining Metal guitar with symphony instruments and especially French horn in a lot of his instrumental Metal music.

I played French Horn for 7 years. I was born premature and, in Elementary school, my Dr said I would never have the lung power to play the instrument. I rose to first chair. sadly, an overbearing high school music teacher would drive me, and others, away from instruments but I'll never forget my love for the French Horn
Played this instrument for two years grade 7 and grade 8. Honestly didn’t want to play it but my teacher said my ear was better than most people in my class and my talent would be wasted on trumpets or trombones which we had many of. Out of 64 people there were only two French horns and I played one of them. When I learned I never looked back. It was so fun and I wish in the future or when I’m settled (I’m 27 now) I can try to pick one up and play again
Played the clarinet growing up, I don’t play anymore but wish I was shown the this beautiful instrument! I definitely would have chosen it 😊
I love my French horn so much - player for last 47 years and tenor horn for 5 years before that. It was great to hear an exponent of the art of horn playing sharing his enthusiasm with us. Thank you from across the pond.

I’ve been playing the French horn for 10 years and the oboe for 7 and I think the moral of the story is the instruments that are obnoxious to learn often sound the most beautiful
does your embouchure get messed up from switching back and forth from brass and woodwind?????
@@shebo2692 shouldn't do, I play trumpet and alto saxophone and switching between embrouchure isn't too difficult. It might take a minute or two if you've been heavily practicing one instrument over another, but it's completely fine. Again tho, I'm not sure about french horn and oboes as I don't play either. :)

Former Army bassoonist here, who bought her first French horn here a couple of weeks ago at age 51. I've always loved the sound of the horn and felt it was time to learn it! Love your video--thanks for the inspiration!
You play the bassoon?
I started with piano as a very young child and then clarinet. in 7th grade I changed to bassoon because I wanted to play something that not everyone else was playing. A difficult instrument and I worked very hard at it and could play respectably. But I had always admired the horn and half way through high school switched to it. (I had already been dabbling with trumpet on the side for many years so a brass instrument was comfortable to me.) I liked how versatile the horn was in all manner of orchestral music. And it is interesting that there are many pieces that have only strings and two horns. In the orchestra, I think the cello and horn carry off solos the most beautifully. Well, I guess I have to include the oboe because every oboe solo ever written seems to sound great. If you are thinking about the horn, it is a good choice because a lot of music has now been written for it. You have probably heard, and don't realize it, one particular horn player more than any other musician of any instrument and that would be Vince DeRosa. He is now retired, but was a studio musician with an incredibly long career from 1935 to 2008 and in that period seemed to play for almost every movie and TV show and accompanied a vast number of popular singers (from Frank Sinatra to Natalie Cole). He is what is called "First Call" in the business which means he is the best and you call him first to try and get him. He was so good, that more and more composers started writing bigger horn parts into movie soundtracks and such. If you want a good example, listen to the music from Star Trek II, the Wrath of Khan. The principle horn player for that, as usual, was Vince DeRosa. Sad to say, I drifted away from the horn and went over to the "dark side", the trumpet. There is a vast amount of horn this and horn that on TH-cam, but some of the best, and also most entertaining, is by Sarah Willis who is British but with the Berlin Philharmonic. And be sure to check out some jazz, yes jazz, French horn playing.

Yes, I agree. I was a clarinet student in Jr hi, but everyday in the band rehearsal I stared at the fr horn and player constantly. The player was a well behaved tall blonde who constantly was wiping and stroking his horn. His special parts were majic. I fell in love. He graduated and I never knew his name, but I still kept loving French Horn.
I was about 10 when I saw and heard the French horn for the first time. The sound was so glorious that I decided when I got to middle school and joined the band I would play the French horn. It is one of the most versatile instruments. It never ceases to amaze me in what it can do. I still play it when I can.

I am drawn to the intriguing beauty of the French horn, but am captivated by what comes from within it...a beautiful and surprisingly versatile sound! At 57, I don't know if I'll ever get around to learning it, but I really enjoyed this presentation!! I struggled on French horn the whole year in grade 9. The teacher passed me with the understanding that if I continued I would have to play trumpet and repeat the grade. So I did. Flash forward years later to me trying a horn on display in a music shop. Much to my surprise receiving compliments for my horn playing, which I could tell was light years ahead. So i became a horn player again since the love of the instrument was still there.
...because the horn sound has such a Beautiful sound, no vibrato necessary
i've been playing the horn for 3 years now and i'm never going to change. it makes me sad to think when i graduate high school i'll no longer be in my school band. i am the only french horn player in my band so my director make distinct sections in prices made for just me. it's not much of a solo but still i have my little time to shine and everyone gets to hear the true beauty of the french horn
It’s always nice when the band director picks a piece that lets the instrument shine. I also play French horn, (been playing for 6 years now) and last school year my band played a piece where the French horn was honestly the key part, with a solo and then the rest of the band coming in and playing the same thing. It was really fun!
I tried to play the French horn as a kid when I was in the 4th grade, and instead of being encouraged, the teacher laughed at my failure and inability to play and took it away. Fucker. I’m interested in horns again :)
American overture was such an inspiration to me to continue on French horn and play it professionally. When I first joined high school band they played it and it just gave me such excitement that I knew I wanted to keep playing. I still can’t wait until I can play professionally.

Can you use french horn in jazz band? I play flute but im hoping to play a brass instrument in jazz band.
@@DiluteSum I don’t know about your band specifically, but at the high school in my school district said that if you already play an instrument, you can either switch to one that’s a traditional jazz band instrument, or they can modify a part for your instrument. If your’s is similar, then probably!

I actually have a class in my middle school which is band and I have never touched an instrument in my life(other than those cheap recorders).
So when my band teacher started marking down who played instruments and who didn’t, I was one of the ones who didn’t. And I was assigned to the French horn and was partners with another classmate
The worst part about being in band is the fact that I have the mental capacity of a wet tissue box and it has been always hard for me to learn any instruments Though, I’ll try my best because I’m not failing that class like I fail my Spanish class
Edit: I also feel like I just need to remember what to do and just not be stupid, if I can remember everything about a video game, I can remember how to play some notes on an instrument

I usually play trumpet and trombone but Yesterday I got my First battered.second.hand b flat french horn today I played my First Song , I Will never be and accomplished player but I wanna show up in a jazz jam session with this horn and are the look on everyone s face and yes I Will use It for old jazz
I played the French horn from elementary school through high school, once I graduated I wanted to get one but with the price I could get used cars for less so I had to give up on that purchase, was nice while it lasted but yeah if cars costs the price ain’t right no wonder we don’t have as many musicians
I play the clarinet and it definitely wasn’t my first choice, with my first choice being the French horn, but the only reason why I chose the clarinet over the French horn is because the clarinet has a smaller case than the French horn so it’s better for my living conditions
I have only been playing for maybe about a year and a half but I absolutely adore playing the French Horn! It’s definitely been a challenge been but I have worked hard to be were I am now. I would definitely recommend the French Horn to any one looking for an instrument to play!

@@rayk8177 Hello! I would like to add a quick something. The spit doesn’t necessarily get on your hand when playing the French horn and since I am assuming you are talking about when your hand is in the bell, spit does sometimes leak out of the bell and onto the floor. I would recommend putting a cloth on your leg if you play so it leaks on there instead. I hope this is helpful! Sorry I am saying this later but this only happened to me recently.

Hi, just curious if it would be too late to switch from double bass to horn this late (I’m a going into senior year of high school and have college auditions coming up in about 5 months). I played trumpet for 3 years in middle school and am not completely new to brass but it’s been a while. I also feel my talents of hearing pitch well would be better suited to horn. Thanks! I really love the horn
It has that melancholic foggy tone. Onkole y trompa by Jaco Pastorius is a great example.

I've already chosen the French Horn. I played sax first and I still do. I played saxophone in the French Horn in a youth orchestra, and one year we had a repertoire with the 1812 Overture, Themes from How To Train Your Dragon, Leya's theme, Throne Room and End Title, The Imperial March and Kaiserwalzer and oh man. The music was wonderful but I couldn't help but feel very out of place as a saxophonist. I picked up horn specifically for Orchestra work and I haven't regretted it once.

Engelbert Schmid triple. Perhaps the most expensive horn that you can get. But this is Navy and weapons are expensive although they sometimes miss their target
