- A Dutch-led team of investigators have revealed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was brought down by a Buk surface-to-air missile which exploded less than a metre from the cockpit. All 298 people on board the Boeing 777 died in the crash, which happened as the plane flew at 33,000 feet over eastern Ukraine in July 2014. Sky's David Bowden's special report looks at the findings of the Dutch Safety Board and explores the questions which remain unanswered.

My long time childhood friend was seated in the business class with his family. I cannot imagine their final moments, especially with the narration stating the cockpit and business class was the parts that was hit by the missile. They were flying home for Eid and their grandmother was extremely heartbroken. Attending their funeral was one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever done in my life. Five years after they still have no one charged for the crash, the victims of this flight deserve justice. My heart is with the families of the victims❤️
Well, no one charged for her Sister MH 370 either. And it only has been a year since MH370 disappearance.
Unfortunately during such a war with such big players, its usually impossible to get those who actually did it, much less who ordered it. They are too well protected, it certainly by all counts seems like the Rebels did it likely by accident believing it was a Ukranian plane because of the course change. However, it cant really be denied that Ukrainian forces could have done this on purpose to setup the Rebels to gain more International support for the Ukranian side. I do not imply that I believe either but they are the most likely with the weapon system that was used. It could have even been Russians trying to setup Ukraine, in any case these forces are too powerful to ever prove without a doubt who did it. Its depressing and very sad, and my heart goes out to the victims and their families. This rarely happens luckily, but its happened before with the Soviet Union, and even claims of the US with TWA 800 that get thrown around.
Here in the United States they said the following day what type of missile was used and who shot it, that was about all the help we could provide at the time, the Netherlands was supposed to take care of business afterwards, probably drop a few bombs here and there, some type of response.

I DO think Russia sometimes gets a little defensive and instead of just acknowledging a mistake or situation, they blame others or cover up. I don't know exactly what happened here, however.
Flight over war zones are banned. But this one was supposed to get there and to be downed, as Russia was supposed to be blamed for it.

Those seated further away from the shrapnell impact of the rocket and with their seatbelts firmly fastened and not hit by violantly flying debris might have gotten awake again shortly before their seat hit the ground. Another proof is that some victims were found still wearing an oxygen mask around their neck. That means they were still able to grab them after the explosion.
But all this is an unbearable and horrifying thought to me as a former flight attendant and very well familiar with a passenger cabin, as well as I am a passenger myself very often. It must have been pure hell for all those seated with their seatbelts fastened and not hit and instantly killed by flying debris.

dear god i have seen surface to air missile hit an army plane and the pilot still ejected and was alive so probably a lot of the people towards the back of the plane were conscious for the fall, cant imagine a more horrific last 2 mins

I just found out about this…5 years ago yet the pain feels like it just happened. This breaks my heart, all those lives lost and families forever destroyed. Those responsible for this must be held accountable and face what theyve done at full force.
I had to fly to Thailand from the UK a few days after this. It flies a similar path to this one. I remember being so scared that this would also happen to my plane. I still get scared when I fly over that part

After the crash a agreement is signed for the Investigation between the dutch and ukraine, also involved Malaysia, Australia and Belgium. Russian evidence about the cutting audiotapes are ignored, the fact the order to flight over the warzone is ignored even after warning, ignored what some eye witness claimed to see, ignored who had reason to. They wanted to stop Russian gas export. And that worked, because the Netherlands is stopping with the gas after alot political discussions about russia after the crash.

Ik denk dat het onderzoek erg stinkt. Rusland heeft op geen enkele manier de kans gekregen op de Nederlandse tv voor tegenspraak terwijl ukraine dit wel kreeg. Als ukraine de dader was zou dit Nederland financieel niet goed uitkomen aangezien Nederland juist net met ukraine samenwerkingsverbanden aanging (verdrag met ukraine etc). I remember that day.. I just came home from work. Then a co worker called me to tell me that 2 other co workers (a brother and a sister) had died in the mh17 crash. Its still hard to believe that this really happend.
They were traveling with their grandparents that day. Their parents stayed home in the netherlands. De day before the crash, the brother didnt feel good about the filght and told a friend he has never been so nervous and scared of flying before. He probably felt it coming😔

Good God this is terrible. This should NEVER happen to innocent people! So sad, I can't begin to imagine what these poor people witnessed in their last moments and it scares me to even think about it. I pray that whomever was responsible for this atrocity gets what they deserve.

I won't forget this crash I flew out that day for my OE and this was the first thing I saw on the news before I went to the airport, friends of my mine were over the Ukraine airspace when it happened, horrific tragedy.
Me and my parents had tickets booked for this flight but we cancelled a day before because we decided to stay on holidays for another week because me and my brother were young enough to miss a week of school without major consequences. I was 8 at the time, my brother was 4.

3.30 Over a 100 air craft had been flying over the war zones before MH17... and yet there had been significant warnings!!
I flew on this route a few days before the crash of MH17. Opposite way, I was on my way back from Afghanistan to Germany on a military (Airbus) plane. And our flight schedule was totally changed due to the war in Ukraine, we were told that we had to fly a day later than plane, the flight time would be much longer because the plane had to take a different route, and we would land at a different airport. I remember this very clearly, because I was upset. I couldn’t wait to go home after 6 months of war in Afghanistan, and I was annoyed when I heard about the changed schedule. That was around July 12th, 2014, five days before the incident. Little did I know what was going to happen, of course...
I am so grateful that I am well and alive. I just write this to day that there had been significant warnings about the war zone in Ukraine, and planes were asked not to cross Ukrainian air space. The military (NATO) obviously had more information than the civil transportation authorities. Very very sad... 😭

@Azril Iskandar It wasn't restricted. They were given permission to fly on that route and there were other planes that flew there before them.
@GoodGoodies123did u watch the fakin video? The pilot was given permission with a flight corridor to go through plus a specific altitude. Warzone or not many passenger plane has gone through this specific route before. Also if u look up at the time where the gulf war was taken place in the middle east, about a hundreds of commercial airlines were passing by the warzone with given permission to fly above significantly higher altitude and specific flight corridor.

My old preschool teacher was on that flight. She was by far the best and the kindest teacher in the preschool.
One can only hope every last one of them either died immediately upon missile impact, or lost consciousness shortly after decompression. I don't even want to imagine the sheer terror one must feel being on a plane breaking up at 33,000 ft knowing those are your last moments.
I could still remember 23 of the passengers were Australians. There were even pictures of these Aussies before the takedown!
Also, there was a picture of the plane at Schipol, and a passenger filmed people settling down before takeoff. May my Aussie blokes be known forever.

I think part of the reason that persons brothers remains or belongings were never found may have been because they were sitting near the area of the explosion

they were looking for identification and trying to find any proof that it flew in a military capacity, they were in disbelief someone sent a commercial airliner trough contested airspace and dealing with the realization that they've just shot down and killed nearly 300 foreign civilians.

True story. I flew in the Navy and I did some commentary on TV and Radio. I was scheduled to speak with a radio reporter (I assume it was radio, I did the interview by phone from my house). We were supposed to talk about Iraq, the 2003 war hadn't started yet but things looked ominous. But on the day of the interview, before the interview, the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated on re-entry.
The guy asked Iraq questions but turned to the shuttle crash mid-interview. I remember him saying one good thing was that they died quickly, not knowing. Then he asked me to comment. I was pretty sure they hadn't died instantly and that they knew perfectly well, for several minutes that they were doomed. The crew compartment in that thing was a vault, as indestructible as any cage ever built. I was thinking that they, like the Challenger crew, probably survived, tumbling through the air, until impact.

No one could ever imagine the shear terror those passengers must have been feeling the moment the plane was hit, and started to break up, hopefully, many may have been overcome with the decompression,if in deed that did occur, RIP
Shot down? MH 17 flying out of Amsterdam, Netherlands, NATO was not shot down, it was blown up with an imitation that it was shot down as part of an operation under a false flag in order to blame the Donbass militia and Russia. Its wreckage lies to the point of mythical detonation of a non-existent Buk anti-aircraft missile, despite the fact that the speed of the aircraft is about 900km / h 250m / s and the wind is not the force that can affect the vector of movement of the wreckage. This debris is not from the cabin and there are many traces of excessive pressure and excessive temperature inside the fuselage (front cargo compartment and passenger compartment above it) an internal explosion in the front cargo compartment occurred before the last FDR point. And this point, which is by the way the last for the CVR (the flight recorders are intact and the sources and paths of information are at different distances) is the point of destruction of the fuselage. There are no fragments of an anti-aircraft missile, only forgery, details of the Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile 9M38 (one of the two types in service with Ukraine, the second 9M38M1) and there are no striking elements, only fakes.
So sad that nobody has been charged for this so far.

i always wondered why they don't start adding an anti missile system into passenger planes, like flares, and some kind of radar to detect them

It was A Russian BUK anti-aircraft crew that Russia had loaned to the rebels in Eastern Ukraine. They believed they were shooting down a Ukrainian airforce Antonov transport aircraft and boasted as much on the official Russian TASS news agency until they realised they had in fact shot down a Air Malaysia flight killing all 298 on board.

I was flying home with my son the next day. From Kiev to Boston. Layover in Amsterdam. News in Ukraine the night before said there was a helicopter shot down. We didn’t have any information until I got back to Boston. Then it kicked in my head why there were so many different signs in boryspil airport as well as a part of Amsterdam airport shut down. It blew my mind.
This is attrocious. Whoever the culprits they have to be punished vigorously and sentenced. Those done this are answerable to all the families of 300 passengers including crew.
