How to Dig for Clams During Low Tide

  • The best time for digging clams is during a low tide. This is because the clam beds that were underwater are now exposed as the tide moves out. The tool you need for digging clams are a garden rake, and a narrow shovel.

    I went with a friend crabbing and I had never clammed before, so at low tide which was as about sunset. We went out and dug in the dark and lost track of the tide. To make a long story short, we swam back to shore in the dark with buckets and shovels in hand and wallets in our teeth. Didn't lose a single clam.

      @@howzit9397, you can go anywhere on the Oregon coast at low tide.
      I went to Whalen island state park in between pacific city and sand lake.
      Just bring 2 hard rakes and 2 sacks that water can drain through.
      That's the best results for cockles but they do have razors as well. You can either dig or use a gun for those.

    For those that are wondering, for the butter clams (they are not soft shelled, pk was mistaken) you look for a hole that looks like a flat head screw driver was stuck in the ground.

    I love digging for clams in the Bay of Fundy here in Nova Scotia. The only downside is when the tide is coming in you need to run as fast as possible with your equipment to avoid the tidal bore.

  • @terrymcdonald3388
    @terrymcdonald3388 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 9 to 10 minutes, you had butter clams which are also called Martha Washington clams; they are not soft shell clams. Know your clams because you are allowed 36 softshell clams and only 20 butter clams. I need to make a video of clam digging. The soft shell clams have almost been almost completely wiped out on the central coast of Oregon.

    • @jaikim4499
      @jaikim4499 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      what PK told me is that is depends on the type of ground type ur searching in. we were in very hard tidal beds. clam guns r more for softer sandier areas.

    • @MrGreen-sw1ly
      @MrGreen-sw1ly 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would use a clam gun first. There might be a lot of dead clam or empty shell around so maybe that's not good for clam gun. But still, there's a lot of area to clam gun it. 6-8 inch of sand is no problem for a clam gun.

    Thanks for stating to use a skinny shovel, for those of us not wanting to dig out a lot of heavy sand at one time due to a bad back. It's my lower back. I have had colon cancer, and have heard that is par-for-the-course with it. I also blew my lower back out at a shampoo bowl, working in the hair salons while working-on my undergrad. Spent 17 yrs in college, a lot of the time working in salons, and it left me in a lot of lower back pain.... That is adding to the colon cancer. I am really appreciative that you took the time to make this video, as I am not from a coastal area, and want more information on how to dig the clams. Those raised in coastal areas were taught how, and take that for granted.
