    Welcome back! Okay, since Curse is technically a negative condition, you can use the bottom of Blood Ritual to soak up any curses your allies get if you stay close enough to them. With monsters like Elite Forest Imps who keep drawing a certain card, your AMD could swell up like a giant balloon, filled with curses. Maybe even all ten curses. And since it’s possible for you to play without even using your AMD, like sticking with suffer damage and retaliate abilities, that balloon could never pop. Thus negating any curse abilities monsters use for the rest of the scenario.

    1:12:33 Wracked with Pain is insane value. There is a broad Frosthaven rule that allows you to not apply *non-mandatory* conditions associated with abilities or modifier deck draws. Therefore you may forego the Wound and just apply Stun and Brittle in order to guarantee the Brittle isn't wasted on a tick of Wound damage and can even trigger on can trigger on end-of-turn effects like Bane. So Hopelessness (Bane self) plus Shared Affliction (remove Bane to Bane an enemy) followed by Wracked with Pain (Stun+Brittle) is a repeatable three card combo that deals 20 suffer damage (only requiring the enemy is not healed, nor immune to Bane or Brittle).

    Thanks for the guide, it's good to see you're making these again. There's a lot of insightful advice, it's helping tremendously. We're just in the process of creating Pain Conduit build with my girlfriend (it's her character) and already you've helped quite a bit. She wants to play the Condition striker build (can't blame her, sound really fun) and I think your guide sent an important message to stay focused on the main build. I mean, it's really tempting to pick Reject the Gift at lvl 7 and combo it with Hammer Potion, but that helps just once per scenario and overall doesn't synergize well with the rest of the cards.
    What we figured so far is that while Penance seems good at lvl 7, it is probably better to go down a level for Phantom Limb. Maybe that's different in 4 players, but in 2p setup it's hard to get like 3 or more adjacent enemies, and doing something like 8 dmg while suffering 2 just doesn't seem as good. Penance also needs to consume Fire, which is the more problematic element to infuse (without that it would deal 6 dmg while suffering 2), and it needs you to move to close range, which for a ranged character isn't exactly appealing. Phantom Limb just seems much easier to use.
    As for the conditions management, I want to mention Impair - Chained by Despair seems to be the go-to persistent for this build and you can self-inflict Impair with it - which is a condition we completely forgot about for like 3 first scenarios or so. When you already have Wound and Poison, Impair is much easier to play with than Immobilize or Disarm, so if you need pretty safe combination of conditions to setup Infection Purge and The Agony of others, don't be like us, don't forget Impair exists.
    What we didn't figure out yet, is a good place for a Fire infusion enhancement. She struggles with Fire, always lacking 1 infusion per cycle. Obviously we want to pick a low level card that will be played till high levels. Since the high level cards all have incredible top actions, it would be great to find solid enhancable lvl1 bottom, but we can't really find one. I guess Line of Transference (but that will be often played for the top) or Pleasure in Pain (but I don't see that being a card brought often at lvl 8-9) are ok options, but I think there has to be a better way. Any ideas anyone?

    My group unlocked this class last night. First thing I did was look for a Ragebadger rundown. You love to see it.
    P.S. The 'absorbing and redistributing conditions' theme has mechanical overlap with a custom class I've been working on for over a year. I'm not quite sure how to feel about that.

    Someone else in my group retired their Shackles recently, and I am very much looking forward to getting to them in my solo campaign. One fun thing I recognized now that I have gotten a little further in the game, while it is a level 9 card Redemption would make for a very strong opener on that string of scenarios where a lot of your party starts with two curses. Looking at it in that light, I hadn't thought about this before but it would have been a fun detail if the perk for this class specifically was 'You may ignore scenario effects' rather than being mandatory.

    • @Acriwix
      @Acriwix 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Agree about the Scenario effect perk! For the first time ever, I DIDN'T want to take the perk! Usually I just didn't either care about the negative condition it gave me, or it was sometimes even beneficial for me! So the choice option would have been a great addition in this case, like you said.

    I love these videos. The one thing I wish you had gone more deeply into was the "stats" of the class. You discuss initiative a lot but don't really go deep into things like mobility or effective range. I'd also love if you talked about picking retirement goals in relation to class features. That latter really hit me hard when I was foolish enough to grab the Lots of Enhancements retirement goal while play Shackles and quickly discovered that my limited mobility and modest range meant I had trouble looting (which meant this retirement goal was shockingly hard). Also, it would be nice if these videos discussed XP a little more. When playing Shackles, I was earning roughly twice the XP each mission than I earned playing Blinkblade. That was eye opening and not immediately obvious to me by looking at the cards.

    • @RageBadgerGaming
      @RageBadgerGaming  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi, I saw a couple of your comments and haven't gotten around to the other. There's been a pretty awful dude sending a brigade here so comments have been tied up.
      I definitely have had to prune guides so adding more probably isn't happening but expanding on that for bonus content might be fun. Effective range can be variable but on some classes it's pretty static. Shackles is one class where I did slap several enhancement stickers on movement which should come as no surprised to you.
      XP varies dramatically but Shackles is the exception, I do think it didn't get XP tested enough and I say that as a tester. It's very easy to reliably get 15+ xp, where I often get 10-12 normally. I've definitely gotten like 20 before and that's pretty rare in Frosthaven.
      I do think going through classes and talking peak enhancements outside of the starters(which I have discussed) might be fun.
      Anyway just mostly wanted to say I liked your thoughtful comments.

    Started playing Shackles blind this week. I went more of a defender build to help squisher/ high damage companions stay on the frontlines. Essentially becoming a lightning rod for all their damage and status effects is so good and allows for normally incredibly risky plays to work seemlessly. Becoming an extended health pool for allies is great. The class takes everything I enjoyed about Saw in Gloomhaven and built upon it.

      @@RageBadgerGamingNot yet! Hopefully soon though. We have a Bannerspear in our party, and I've been able to make use of Shackles to keep the Banner alive on a few occasions; but I've been wanting to make use of it with Boneshaper or some of the more niche, glass cannon summons to keep them in play. It's so neat how Shackles changes game elements so much and opens so many new options.

    You cannot stun enemies aside from the level 8 card(wraacked with pain) that does so directly and the lvl 5 (chained by despair) that only works if it gives it that turn during an attack.
    All cards that let you pass on debuffs exluded the stun debuff, or require you to remove the debuff to apply it to an enemy.
    Delayed malady top removes the stun. And it's bottom and the lvl 9's bottom prevent it from being removed.

    • @RageBadgerGaming
      @RageBadgerGaming  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can still stun but yes, as you said it requires you to remove your stun debuff to do so. It's definitely not a mainstay of any build. Disarms and Immobilizes are the bread and butter part of a controller toolkit for sure.

    With Reject the gift at 1:09:15 could you have your allies attack you, then pass the damage on to an enemy? Then you could ignore the enemy's shield and retribution, and utilize your own negative effects such as poison or brittle.

    One very important aspect for this character:
    When you have disadvantage (muddle) you pick the worse modifier, however added effects have an undetermined but positive effect and if it's not determined which card is better you most pick the first one (for advantage you choose).
    The perks are all about adding modifiers to everything, effectively making you ignore muddle. Because whats better x2 or -2 double curse, appearly this is very unclear. Also the the +0 +1/debuff are +0 cards with an added effect when comparing cards.

    • @RageBadgerGaming
      @RageBadgerGaming  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Right! Very glad you agree, which is generally why I'm not unfond of calling some of the muddle self cards "core cards" as it certainly has less effect on this character, barring nulls with a focus on agony of others which is unfortunate.

    @Rage Badger I need help with some rulings, it is not connected to this video but its the newest video you got and find you to be a decent authority on all things Frosthaven. It would help settle a very enthusiastic argument :D.
    What happens when you use "Grant Attack + X" and "Grant Attack x" when commanding a summon.
    We checked the rules for Commanding Figures and it says: "A commanded figure retains all of their persistent bonuses and special traits".
    So what does persistent bonuses and special traits means when it comes down to minions?
    More specifically?
    Does the minion which has a ranged attack by default still keep the ranged attack when granted +X? How about just X?
    Same question if the minion has poison.
    Same question if the minion has pierce.
    Same question if the minion has attack all adjacent enemies.
    Same question if the minion has a ranged attack with a triangle pattern.
    Same question if the minion has target 2 enemies.
    So from reading discussions on forums and looking trough FAQs.
    a) +x is ranged, X is always melee so the minion does not keep range on attack x
    b) if minion has poison, bleed, etc.. it always keeps it
    c) if minion attacks al adjacent enemies it still does same with number of targets.
    d) if minion has a ranged pattern it cannot do it if you grant it X because there is no grey hex to execute the attack from.
    I can't help but feel this rule was not really well formed initially and now they are just putting patch over patch over patch to make it work. It is not consistent between itself.
    Basically the d) breaks the consistency pretty badly.
    Personally I feel like grant +X attacks should keep everything minions have and grant X should just be a melee attack without any minion traits because it can create quite some unbalanced situations, especially with a hive minion which has 2 pierce and attack all adjacent targets with his attack. This is a level 1 minion ( well x) and snowdancer has a level 1 card which grants 2 move and attack 3. I do not really feel like this is a combo you really have to dig hard for or compromise anything to do and it feels way to strong.
    So what is the ruling and how does it affect the balance of the game in your opinion. Me and my friends had a huge discussion about this. They claim it is in the nature of the game to break stuff. I claim that in Frosthaven they did a lot of work ( for example the whole rework of enchanting system) to keep things somewhat balanced unless you really work for it. So I Consider granting minions attacks and having them keeping their powerful effects was not an intention but oversight.
    Thnx!

    • @dwarf74
      @dwarf74 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Summons keeping all (applicable) effects goes back to Gloomhaven, and it's an intended interaction.
      It only doesn't work if it can't work because of a limitation - (e.g. a ranged AoE pattern can't work for a melee attack and vice versa because that's impossible in the rules syntax for red hexes.)
      This is an intended part of the power level for summon-based classes. It's how they were designed and tested.

    • @RageBadgerGaming
      @RageBadgerGaming  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So this is actually addressed in the FAQ as you saw. You're correct. If you grant someone with poison on their attack an attack, it gives it poison, pierce, etc.
      The payoffs from granting abilities is significant. Especially when not necessarily on summoned allies but even other characters, say a Blink Blade with phasing blades or a Drifter with Crushing Weight. Or controlling enemies with powerful effects (like brittle on attack!).
      All of that was considered when testing. The stuff you can break in Frosthaven is deliberate. Even then I'm not sure how mega broken it is given the general strength of Grants and valid targets, it's usually pretty tame. You did list some great combos though, I'd consider using those :)

    I was struggling to make a General / Retaliate build work since I was paired with Banner (always very low initiative), but then I got the "better boots" that allowed me to drastically reduce my initiative each long rest.
    I'm still working on the 40 damage Mastery. I did get 36 very early on in Pain's career LOL, I arranged to get jumped on turn one by six hounds(?), each took 6 retaliate damage. If I repeated that scenario now, I would easily surpass 40 damage (but might not survive the incoming!). Otherwise not really come close since, waiting on another lovely scenario start.

  • @rupert7565
    @rupert7565 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The top mastery needs to deal deal damage to other figures, not counting yourself makes it a lot harder.
    Also it needs to make them suffer damage, meaning excess damage doesn't count.
    Also also you need to be unexchasted after damage taken to trigger retalate and similar effects. All of which makes me sad.
    The "easiest" ways are being above 20 hp, get brittle on yourself, apply it on a boss, then make sure it has 40+ hp left, than deal 10 damage (which become 20 on you, which becomes 40 on the boss) to yourself with the agony of others bottom, or reject the gift top up. Both lvl 9 cards help a lot in getting the mastery though, and in opening other options.

    • @RageBadgerGaming
      @RageBadgerGaming  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      AH that's actually a really good idea, if you have access to a brittle self and a boss, that's more than certainly the best way of doing it!
      Yeah the fact excess damage doesn't count is often why the "easy wins" are harder as you need enough living hp around you. It's certainly easier in 4p or as you suggested, with a boss. :)

    Unstable effigy top can be paired with agony of others bottom as a way to deal a bit more damage every round. But yes mostly i found it to one of the least attractive cards in the pool, mostly because there are to many amazing permanent losses in this class.
    Mirrored misery top is only really there for bosses, but down to the dirt or the lvl 3 cards are just better in pretty much every build and scenario.
    The self damage build doesn't mind 2 heal 5 self cards, and wrecked with pain top becomes better because you're more likely to be below half health. Also of note it's below, not half or lower. It's relevant surprisingly often, considering you really want to heal at low health.
