    Did you know I actually start the process about 10 days before I pull off the lambs?
    There are many different ways sheep farmers dry up their ewes, comment below on the methods that have helped the most for you! (add if you are accelerated or annual lambing operation)
    THANKS!!

    Oh wow, Sandi, the “music” ( if that noise can be called music) in this one made me want to use an ice pick to stab my eardrums so I wouldn’t have to listen to it anymore. Good info in it though so even though I don’t and will never have sheep I wanted to learn.

    We have found some single lambs prefer to nurse on one side only - the one they start out on when newborn. The ewe starts out with both sides full of milk and even. The lamb preferentially nurses on one side

    • @alwborys346

      The ewe dries up naturally on the other side. The udder would be fine if she had twins. They don’t have mastitis but are conserving energy by not producing milk on the one side due to a lack of demand. Any stats on these ewes and how their udder performs when they have twins?

      Thanks! I wondered what was going on here. I haven't had a chance to go through the weaning data yet due to lambing and corn harvest, but I will be soon to see what went on.

    Great videos as always. Quickly, why do you want to dry them?Does that happen before or after weaning. I live in Nigeria and during weaning, i don't do any intervention to the ewes. Thanks for your insight. Happy holidays.

      She says in other videos that they are barn only. Worried about predation by coyotes or something. It's a nice barn, still sad though.

    Great video as always sandi! I saw a video awhile back about sarto sheep farms who I think are based somewhere in Canada. And if I remember right they said they restrict water for a day or two when trying to dry up the ewes. Is that something you do? Or have you heard of anyone restricting water to help get the ewes to dry up?

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is a pretty popular thing to do here also... I just don't have an easy way to shut those water bowls off independent of the rest of them in the barn. Thanks for the good tip!

    It could be that that the lambs were only drinking from one side so the not used side dried up goats and humans do that. It's not that she won't let them nurse it's that they prefer one side

    This country boy has one strong comment after viewing most all of your vids: you need a trained helper. Sheep are a labor intensive livestock and you've backed yourself into a corner what with all the "lambing" within a week or so. Get some help so you can get some rest! By the way, I worked in both Ontario and Quebec for a couple of years and like Canada and its people, especially you.

    Hey sandi! I'm loving 7 days of lambing...
    Question. My vet has agreed me using micotil at ewe dry off is a good idea in my situation. I have some mastitis at lambing ( annoying). Dr Kim is familiar with using it in dairy cows ( she was my herd health vet when I was milking). Anyway, we are curious about dosage. I found an article that suggests 10mg/kg. Is that what you are using re your vets recommendation. Meat withholding is 43 days. Her name is Kim Ehlers at Barn Hollow vet clinic Mt View MO. Thank you so much! It is actually recommended for ovine use for several things. Cool!!! I do have a good handling system. Do you weigh individuals to figure dosage?

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Micotil for drying up ewes dosage that I use is 1.5ml/100 lbs. So in my case it ranges from 2.5-3ml for my ewes. I don't weigh them, but for accurate dosage if you have one, you should. I don't have one in the ewe barn... So we take guesses on my ewe weights according to my weights on any adults I ship. So its an average at best. Just make sure you don't accidentally inject yourself... it can be lethal for humans...

    Is having the flock and the way you manage it able to profit financially or is it financially self sustaining and more like a hobby?

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The flock is self sustaining now, but the first few years were hard. The grain operation absolutely subsidized the first few years of the sheep operation. But we treat this farm as a whole farm enterprise.

      I have seen in her other videos about lambing she uses spray marking paint.
      We use "branding" irons with marking paint. They are ok. They get pretty gummed up by the end.

    Do these Sheep/lambs ever get to go outside? Or is their entire life in the barn?

    • @JudyHart1
      @JudyHart1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kim Herie it’s totally an inside operation, there is a huge population of coyotes, and their acreage is used to feed the sheep. Everything happens in this barn and a former pig barn where the lambs go for weaning and on to market. She’s considering moving her rams over to the barn recently vacated by the cows that just were sold.

    As someone with severe depth perception, as a nurse I had problems getting the cap back on a used syringe & got stuck frequently; enough that as the Unit Director of 3 hospital dialysis units, I received a letter from my boss, the DN, that a certain RN on my unit was too frequently sticking herself & needed instruction. That RN was me, their leader! 🤷🏼‍♀️ Had to have a self talk 🙄 So nope, I couldn’t be trusted with any Micotil injections!
