    There are a few misinterpretations about this video, so I would like to reiterate my thoughts. This video goes over the reasons why you should "avoid" using HDMI, whenever possible. However, if HDMI is the only connection that you have on your machine then yes please try that out first, calibrate and see if it would pass the validation, if it does then you are ok. If not then you may have to look another alternative ports or adapter. There's no place in this video where I said "never" use HDMI, but rather just to avoid it when possible. I hope this clear things up a bit! :)

    Thank you ArtIsRight!
    I am not a content creator, but a software developer, I can confirming everything you have just described in this video, seems when I have DisplayPort to HDMI converted, video information is lost, black-color isn't black enough, white-color isn't paper-white, yet while connecting to a USB-C Alternate Mode the color spectrum seems been as good as my eyes can see from the same system.
    I have two premium laptop setups with one 4K monitor, DELL for work related and the other GigaByte for play, both equipped with OWC Thunderbolt 3 docking station, when connecting one to DP and other to HDMI of the same monitor the color mismatch is driving me nuts visually!
    I wonder why newer 4k monitors do not have multiple input DisplayPorts rather than (1xDisplayPort + 2xHDMI), makes system sharing quite annoying.
    I guess I will have to look into KMV DisplayPort switches so I don't have color space issues.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hear you about the input, I think there's a big shift toward USB C and DP is left in as a legacy port in a way. But it would be nice to get more DP.

      @@ArtIsRight You are right again, USB-C is now widely available as a DisplayPort (Alt Mode) for monitors now.. strange i didn't realize that until you mentioned it!
      I have recently bought another monitor, it has USB-C + DisplayPort + HDMI, which actually worked out better for my hybrid work from home configuration with two laptops.
      while USB-C monitor input is connected to a host, I can still expand as a USB-hub through the monitor, one less docking station, personally I still like docking stations. :)

    I think this situation could have occurred several years ago. Right now, with several generations of the HDMI standard, the original video signal will no longer be clipped over HDMI. And if you have an expensive HDMI cable, you'll get very accurate colors on an HW-calibrated display over HDMI. Modern HDMI standard has very wide bandwidth and described problem is not actual any more.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, but I still know some laptop that have issues with HDMI. So dismissing the issue does not help either. And as one should always do, test it out first. Of note the cable just have to meet the spec, they don't have to be expensive to get accurate color, it is really all just 1 and 0.

      For PC desktop, it would have to be on the video card. PC desktop especially custom build ones and one with a operate video card, there's no video signal route back to the main board, no on board MUX so it would have to be the video card.

      With HDMI, I would try it first with the SW2700PT especially if you don't have other ports, if it works then great! If not then we'll figure out another port. If you have the "option or choice" to avoid it yet but otherwise try it out first, it may or may not work, it is computer dependent but give it a go.

    I'm a new subscriber and I must say, you do fantastic videos and very detailed research! Based on your videos I've just ordered dual SW321C monitors to be ran from both my PC as well as an M1 Mac Mini I should be receiving next week. As you know (per your video) to get 4k 60hz, I'll be connecting via native HDMI on display 1, and the Amazon USB-C to HDMI you recommended in your video for display 2. However, I now stumble across this video and it seems I'm going to have problems completing a hardware calibration these $2000 monitors? Am I understanding this correct? Any work arounds or other recommendations? Per your other video, it does not appear I have any other connection options to stay at 60hz. Thoughts?

      Well at this point you are going to have issues calibrating any displays regardless th-cam.com/video/KXIKRLLVCw4/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/NVi0YdAB2M0/w-d-xo.html nothing works well with it yet. It is all a waiting game at this point. When the software are compatible, I will have to test HDMI on these new Mac, the simple answer right now is that I don't know will they truncate the signal or not. I know that this was done on the 13" MacBook Pro that has the HDMI build in, but it works fine on the 15" MacBook Pro, so it is hard to say. Patience is the name of the game right now and not much else

    • @ronmcgowan
      @ronmcgowan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick response. If I understand your video correctly, my display could suffer from a restricted color range due to the HDMI technology at ALL times. The calibration is less of a concern for me since I run two machines and calibrate with my PC. My concern is having this incomplete color range during editing and prior to printing. Do I understand you correctly? Also, to maintain the 4K at 60hz the previously mentioned connections are my only option, correct?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes to get 4K60 as of now what you mentioned before. If you don't need calibration then it does not matter if the range get truncated, this really only effect hardware calibrated display when doing a true hardware calibration. Again without an update native software I can't test that yet, so we are at a stall here. Everything is waiting game right now, but if you are not going to calibrate I won't worry about it, these are not visual differences that are visually noticeable

    Hey, thanks for the explanation! I have some questions:
    1. when you talk about HDMI, do you mean any kind of HDMI standard? because I am thinking if the HDMI port and cable support enough data (HDMI 2.0 for example), will they still though the color information while having the audio data?
    2. Is there any way to limit only video data through HDMI? it seems like if the cable don't throw the color information, it will be fine.
    3. I am thinking about the mac mini, and maybe a old sw model (without USB c port), do you think I can use the HDMI port out? otherwise it will be a little bit waste of the port...

Also, I've read in a review that the monitor's backlight is white LED. Somewhere else I learned it is an RGB LED selection I should make on the X-Rite i1Pro Display colorimeter. RGB LED is what I should select? And BenQ has recommended that I choose the older 1.3.10 Pallete Master software, rather than 1.3.11. Do you concur, and why? Hi Art!
    Is the HDMI cable only problematic during the calibration process itself? Is it possible to use a diplay port for the calibration, and then afterwards switch to HDMI? Does the HDMI cable have any other drawbacks during normal use (after calibration), as opposed to a displayport / USB-C?
    The reason i want to do this is because i have 2 monitors, but only 1 displayport slot in my computer. I want my other monitor (which is a 144hz monitor) to use the displayport cable.
    Hope you understand the question. Let me know if i need to clarify anything.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Artyom Andreev, HDMI can be problematic during the calibration and also in general use. If your computer is outputting 16-235 compress range then you are throwing all of the shadow and highlight details away in general use. Again, keep in mind that this does not happen to every computer. It happens to some. If you are aware that this happening to you this may be the reason why your calibration is failing the validation process. Another thing to consider as well is the program that you are using to do calibration. If the validation process checks a lot of the white, gray, and black tones like Palette Master Element then the validation will definitely fail if the HDMI is outputting compress range. If you use another program to do a software calibration such as the i1profiler then you may not notice that this is an issue because i1profiler does not validate gray tones during display QA.
      To answer your second question if you are using display port for calibration you want to stick with using the display port for your displays ago as well. Switching the calibration cables will also switch to signal output from the video card. This means that you are not going to get the same signal out when you switch the ports on your video card. Remember this that calibration is very specific to a displaying, the computer, the video card, and also the output ports that you're using during calibration. If your computer and display is capable of using display port or USB type C you're probably better using these two formats that HDMI. Based on my understanding HDMI can do 144 Hz without any issue. Ouch, this is a rough one. ArtIsWrong here, depending on what you're doing. 1st there are a lot of assumptions being made here about what color critical work we're doing. In the video world, when doing color critical work such as color grading... and using a professional video output device like BM Decklink series cards, AJA or Bluefish or Avid Artist cards to output a professional video signal to an external video monitor... HDMI is a great choice. HDMI supports up to 8k/60 and 10bit HDR. Displayport is not a professional video connection, it's a graphics card to monitor connection, so if you're working in pro video, this is a somewhat misleading video. If you're a consumer / prosumer and you're trying to feed a consumer computer monitor via HDMI from a graphics card, then you might run into some trouble and be in the zone that this video is addressing. It's not a shortcoming of HDMI, it's a problem with folks trying to use workarounds that aren't necessarily designed to do what they're trying to do.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  ปีที่แล้ว

      And my point is that some computer truncate signal and that "pro" should test. That is all that I am saying. Too many people hear what they want to hear even though I was clear in my resolve. You can technically just do it directly from the card. I know that resolved make a clean HDMI out device, but non the less you should still do that on a hardware calibrated display this way the calibration data remains on the displays and not the computer. In my research, I think that if you have a specific need for such a device yes use it, otherwise I would just use the signal out directly form the video card.

    But the Decklink only has HDMI and SDI, you really cant use 10bit HDMI with decklink to the Benq monitor? With Decklink it's suppose to be color accurate from Resolve. Are you saying it's never color accurate via hdmi? Can't be, what's the point of the Decklink then?

      I'm not taking about Decklink, I am talking about computer output from GPU, totally 2 different unrelated things. Either way if you have the option to use those cable and one is giving you a better ∆E then use that. With HDMI, it would depend on the machine and driver and testing must be done. My laptop is Asus VivoBook 15, model X512FJ-EJ529T. I use Windows 10.
    At first, I used the HDMI cable to connect the monitor and the laptop. The monitor reproduced the images from the laptop. But watching this video I learned that it is not suitable to use an HDMI cable, especially when calibrating, as HDMI can limit the color gamut. I then tried, with the monitor and laptop plugged in, to use the USB3.1 Gen 2 (USB-C) cable supplied with the monitor, but it didn't reproduce the images from the laptop. The message "no signal detected" appears. I tried using the other USB cable, but it didn't connect either. My laptop has a USB-C cable input. Why this problem may be occurring How to make the correct connection without using HDMI so as not to interfere with the color quality?

      1.2 vs 1.4 just has to do with bandwidths that the cable can carry, higher resolution, HDR etc. This video is meant as a PSA for Hardware calibrated display doing color critical work. I mentioned this in the video but it was not emphasized enough and can easily get glossed over.

      This is one of those situation where it is probably better for you to stick with HDMI considering all of the ports are there on the laptop already. Converting HDMI into something else can still cause problem because you are still using the HDMI base signal. The other option that you have on your machine is to use the Thunderbolt port which is implemented on a USB Type C connection. Get a USB C to Display port something like this www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074V5MMCH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

      I don't think that either one of those have USB Type C and if you are not running a hardware calibrated display HDMI won't really matter much, so for your setup if HDMI is easier then use that. If you want the better signal use USB C to Display Port and that should do wonders. Here's a link to one www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074V5MMCH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 If I were in your position what I would do is just try the HDMI out and see how that works with calibration and etc. If it works then continue to use it.

      You should connect the display direct to the eGPU if you are using it for graphic, you should not connect it if you are using it for CGPU (computing GPU) such as rendering videos, etc. But with MP 6,1 you are looking TB2 delay going to a TB3, provided that you got the latest eGPU enclosure. What I would do instead is consider a scenario like this th-cam.com/video/REGRfFdLYFM/w-d-xo.html get a great external monitor and then use that as the bases for editing and not the Mac display. I have not tested the GW calibrated, but if you want a great pro display from BenQ that won't break the budget I would consider their PD line. Cheers!

    I have a 2013 Mac Pro with 10-core Xeon/64GB RAM/2TB SSD/D300s. The main monitor is BenQ PD3200U. When I do Lightroom photo editing, I have a Dell 32" 4K monitor as the 2nd display. When I do software development and want to stand up for it, I have a BenQ PD2700, on a stand desk, mirrored to the PD3200U. The Lightroom is a bit sluggish. You should not have any issues especially with a software calibration but if you do use a USBC to Display Port Adapter or just use USB C to USB C. As far as performance not sure will it improved much, it is more of a Lightroom thing rather than a GPU thing. But keep me posted on LR performance with the eGPU.

      The best things that you can do for this is subjectively how it feels. There's really no specific benchmark for this. What monitor do you have? And here's the lowdown, so if you have a Hardware calibrated display, then TEST the HDMI to HDMI and see if you can get a pass validation, if you can, stop worrying about it. If it failed validation then you can try another connector but chances if your HDMI is already outputting truncate signal any coveter would be effected as well. If you have a software calibrated display HDMI to HDMI will work just fine, no need to worry.

    So confusing my friend you start saying you should not use it in a pro color workflow and end the video saying that you are fine using it if you succeeded calibrating with palette master using HDMI....so why do you guys put an HDMI port on your SW series in the first place? how often do you hardware calibrate with Palette Master ???

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is more of a suggestion of why anyone should avoid using it and not an absolute saying that one should never use it. The reason why I made this video, for context, if anyone needs to know, is that, not all HDMI ports cause this issues, but some does and when this happens, users would go in a downward frustrating spiral of no one being able to provide them with answer to what is happening and why. This is usually the issue on the video card or port output by the way and not the display fault by any mens. If there are others ports on the computer, most of them are going to be better to use than a HDMI for color critical workflow. But if HDMI is your only port then use that and test, if it pass validation then it is ok. The thing is that most drivers and software, not all, will not tell you if it is truncate the HDMI RGB output range or not and most users would not really know where to find this information because sadly it is not in 1 place but in different places for different driver, if it is there at all. Why build in HDMI, BenQ would have a better answer for this, but here's my answer, sadly HDMI had become one of the adopted standard to make computer more versatile to hook up to other screens and projectors. It is not a superior connection by any means but it is the most prevalent, when was the last time you say Display Port on a projector? So this is one of the reason why they included it, I'm sure there are others too, i.e. other manufacturers are including it, it also makes the display more versatile, etc.
      TLDR, if you have other ports try those out first and use HDMI as the last resort and if validation pass with HDMI then you are OK.

      Print work is a broad definition. If you are going to be printing your images in full tone either using light on paper and chemical, inkjet printing, or HP Indigo or something along those line it is best use Adobe RGB. If your work is pre press, cmyk runs for publication, it would depends on the publications, but most of them will not put in too much money into getting more color or tonal response from a halftone print, this is the same throughout most magazine with the exception of higher end ones. There are other reasons why you should edit in Adobe RGB but that is beyond the scope of the question and the point here :D
