    I can do around 10 sec handstand on the ground and around 10 sec with parallets. I was training about 2 - 3 month to be able to do the one on the ground. Recently I tried it with parallets and only after a few tries I felt pretty stable. I really think it depends on the person which variant is easier. It is true that you have more surface doing a handstand on the ground. For me though it is hard actually even painful to put a lot of pressure on my fingertips during the handstand on the ground. I also have the pain you described with parallets though. I think the reason with the handstand on the ground is so much easier for you is that you have a lot of finger strength bcs of your climbing background and this is combined with balance the most important for holding a handstand on the ground

  • @jeremiah7176
    @jeremiah7176 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, like you I’ve watched many TH-cam videos for handstand tips but this video revealed several things I’ve been searching for.
    For example, it is universally stressed that you must keep your elbows straight, even locked out. But whenever I’ve managed to hold a handstand for more than a few seconds, it’s when I bent my elbows and I thought that was cheating!
    A second point is that your shoulders are not open enough when you use the parallettes and you actually find your balance when your legs are angled forward. I think my lack of shoulder flexibility is also what makes bent elbows essential to find the balance. Interestingly you seem to open your shoulders to 180 degrees on the floor.
    Finally, as many have commented, parallettes are easier if the bar is thicker (less pain) and you can grip them tightly using your wrists to balance both directions.

    I weirdly found handstand on paralettes easier than floor, but I had much longer paralettes so maybe it was a longer lever arm to correct under over balance. Awesome vid as always 👍

  • @camt1818
    @camt1818 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice work! I haven't worked on the parallette handstand yet. I've been doing floor handstands for a few years now, being really dedicated the last year. I finally have the straight line form down. One word of advice: point them toes and you'll have the perfect form. Also, if you point your toes, your toes will hit the wall instead of your heel!

  • @TheMdpalmer

    I also had a similar experience with transitioning from ground to parallettes. I completely disagree with TH-cam's apparent consensus that parallettes are easier than the ground. Great work man, I love your videos 👍

  • @Asdfghjkl-ls1or
    @Asdfghjkl-ls1or 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I also learnt handstand on the ground first and it is completely different when you transition to parallettes mainly because you are using different muscles and technique. However, I think it is meant to be easier for beginners because you can use your forearm and wrist muscles to balance in both directions and it might be easier for a lot of people to generate force in this position. The TH-camrs weren't lying! Geekclimber was just unlucky about his hand pain and probably overestimated the transfer from floor to p-bars.

    • @toniriediger7961
      @toniriediger7961 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I think he should just have gripped harder. Only possible way I can imagine that the hands hurt on parallels is when you kind of „dead grip“ it

    • @Asdfghjkl-ls1or
      @Asdfghjkl-ls1or 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@toniriediger7961 interesting point, sometimes gripping the bar harder you realise can help with balance. However I think its perfectly normal for him to have some pain in his palm doing this for his first time, I've had some discomfort before when doing weighted dips for example. I think you just need to build up tissue in you hands

    • @GeekClimber
      @GeekClimber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Even if you could use bigger muscles more easily on the parallettes, that still doesn't change the fact that the room for balance is a lot smaller. For some reason I find it very difficult if I don't have enough room to correct my balance.

    • @MahdiDesigns
      @MahdiDesigns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@GeekClimber its true you have less distance for balance but you also have two balance points on the parallettes. One is where your palm pushes onto the bar and the other is where your finger pulls from underneath the bar. On the floor you can only push into the floor to correct balance

    • @marco_dl
      @marco_dl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@GeekClimber I think you should try higher girth and longer parallettes, it's so much easier than on the ground. You have less room to move your center of gravity but you can use so much more force, plus it's easier to use the rest of the body to balance since gripping gives you huge stability. I think it's just different techniques and being used to the ground made it really hard

    • @millacabral9475
      @millacabral9475 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just be careful to not hurt yourself, sometimes you get too used to bending and straightening for balance and you can end up either bending too much and landing on your head or locking out too fast/ hard and messing up your elbows. The eventual goal is to do it with straight arms, the bending is like a crutch that should be used sparingly and slightly.

    Interesting to see different perspective.. I started to learn handstand on the ground and practiced for let´s say 2-3months. I was getting some shorter holds but still struggled, especially with a kick-up (as you also mentioned). However, then I tried my first handstand on p-bars and after some fearfull attempts (because of bigger height), I started to feel more and more comfortable on them. I could even make shapes after some time (straddle, tuck, diamond), which was almost unimaginable on the floor at that time haha. The point is, that to me parallettes always felt more "natural". It feels like I can take more advantage of a better grip & forearm strenght. Handstand push ups also feel kind of more comfortable on p-bars than floor for me (even with a bigger range of motion). This comment is getting too long.. Anyways, I enjoyed watching the video :)

    Pretty sure the youtubers weren't lying, since they're probably referring handstands as a controlled one, instead of randomly kicking and hoping to get into the position. I can hold the handstand some time with slowly moving up and I haven't tried with parallettes, but I'm 99% sure it would be much easier, because you can transfer much more power through the arms with proper grip.

    Hey man no hate or anything but I think you are wrong what you said about the parallets and the way you gripped them as well, try getting wooden parallets with bigger circumference so you can grip better and actually be able to balance. The background on climbing helps you with the handstand on the ground because you can put big forces with your fingers to counter the balance! So maybe for you after all its easier on the ground

    Trust me handstands on parallets is easier than on ground. The reason fot this is that you can use power instead of ballance. What I mean by this is that with the normal handstand u can ONLY push with your finger so only ONE direction. If you are doing on bars u can push in TWO DIRECTIONS AND on top of that u can PULL BACK the opposite direction in which you are falling with your fingers to keep your balance. Your blance point might be a little smaller but the use of muscles will be higher and hand function will be greater. The only thing that is difficult is core engagement while kipping.

    have you ever tried to balance using your wrists on parallettes? the key is squeezing hard the bars in order to create a couple of forces applied in the front and in the back part of your fist: they should balance you and bring back your center of gravity in a neutral position in the handstand. You basically wanna try to resist falling down as hard as you can applying as much force as you can to the only thing your touching: the bars.

    The thing about handstand on paralettes is that you can rely much more on brute strength than when you balance a handstand on the ground. You don't need to get the perfect alignment to hold your balance which is why handstand on paralettes is considered easier. If you work with paralettes on a regular basis for other exercises like pushups or dips as well, it is really easy to transfer a solid ground handstand to one on paralettes. It took me a solid year to get the handstand on the ground for 30s but only 2 weeks to transfer it to paralettes.

    There are significant simplicities to handstand on parallets, such as the fact that it puts lesser stress on your wrists, you can make adjustements in balancing on both sides (you can apply force forward to stop yourself from falling on your back or backwards not to fall on the side of your belly). Of course the fact that you're able to balance on the ground won't make you balance on parallets or on streight bar. It will have meaningful transfer tho, and will make the process easier.

    Honestly your parallets look awfull. I never used these, but the ones with the longer bar are usually nicer for balancing

  • @beautifulheartsoothingreci28

    THIS IS SO TRUE: I recently tried the handstand on paralletes and expected it to be way easier as everybody on youtube claims so, but infact the EXACT OPPOSITE is the case!

  • @millacabral9475

    Thank you! I always struggled with parallettes too, it feels much harder. I think there is a big difference in balancing on thick or thin bars, though, mine were entirely too thin when I first got them, so I had to increase the diameter a good two centimeters to be able to hold it without too much pain and having enough surface area to grip and balance properly. If you notice gymnastics p bars, for example, they are quite chonky, they allow for a full grip and better sideways stabilization, I believe.

    I just got my parallettes yesterday and went to the gym today, I managed 10 seconds and thought I was top boy but watching the footage back and my form is tragic. My legs are straight but way past my head and it looks god awful 🤣
    This video just inspired me to try every day and see how long it takes me, amazing stuff brother 🤝

      I do handstands regularly but my shoulder mobility totally sucks. That is why it also takes a lot of force. I need to fix that first, if possible. I was watching this guy on Calisthenics Movement and could not believe how he could rotate his shoulders like he does.

    • @joeybmas14j
      @joeybmas14j 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, he's still average tho. More difficult & challenging moves such as Planche or Maltese would imo definitely move him to the above average category. Let's see him do a Full Planche

    • @marco_dl
      @marco_dl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joeybmas14j you think planche and maltese are above average? Maybe 0.1% of athletes, let alone people can perform those, the average guy probably can do 3 or 4 pullups... Geek climber is definitely above average right now
