Thanks for the great review. What would be the best led strip to mimic the sunrise and sunsets and adjust that animation? Could these strips also be used as flower lights to help them grow better in dark seasons. Hope you have time to answer, all the best.
Eve/SwitchBot won't do a sunrise/sunset at this point (I think). So don't pick those. Also, you can absolutely use them as flower lights, but I've always noticed that the grower lights have a few blue/red LEDs and are relatively intense. So yes, but think about how you're using the strip. :)

You'll have some issues potentially. I think it's OK to do with certain strips but you'd need one that wasn't putting off a ton of heat. If you're going to use a switch, likely don't go smart. You can see from our spreadsheet though which ones are the brightest and can use color temp. So I think you've got good options there if you want to use the app method or other smart methods. But yeah, if you use a switch...don't go smart. You turn off all the connectivity when you turn off the power to smart led strips and bulbs.

I just installed the Govee LGBIC outdoor strip (the 10m version) along the counter rail on my newly renovated deck under a basic diffuser rail. It's very much the pre-M1 version (with fewer LEDs per metre) and I got it for cheap last Prime Day. It's not Matter compatible (unfortunately) and will likely never be (grrrr...) - I have to use the phone app via Bluetooth or WiFi - but does have a lot of interesting effects. It's value for money compared to the much more expensive (and only 2m-long!) M1. I'll only consider the M1 for future renovations once it's come down in price.
Hey David! If you're happy with it, I'm especially happy with it ;) Do you have a new music "self" feature on the strip? The M1's just got that update and I'm wondering if older strips did too. :)
@@AutomateYourLife I just checked. (I haven't played with any of the many, many fancy animations yet...) I don't think you could've went more in-depth, so creds for the work, really good content. but I wish you reviewed another Hue light strip, as the one compared in this video kinda wasn't comparable to the others, as I would say it's made for visible monting, while all the other ones are made for hidden locations with it's light being the only visible part of it. there are the Hue light strips that are better suited for corners, brighter light, and cheaper, which would be a better comparison in this case
I get what you're saying. For the most part though, the features and capabilities of Philips Hue products are the same across the board so you can pretty much just do a cursory check of the one you're looking at. There are of course differences in construction so I know that's what you were looking for but unfortunately this is what I chose.
@@AutomateYourLife ofc, the software and support are the same for the other light strips by Hue, but bending and brightness, as well as Hue's advantage for Philips TV with Ambilight built-in, which ofc means the buyer have to decide based on the TV as well I have an Ambilight TV, and I'm a Hue fan, with 3 light bulbs, a bridge and a dimmer switch, so for me, anything other than Hue isn't really worth it, but I was curious if this video had a light strip which I could use in my car, because I like to do fun things to my car 😅
RN phillips hue is £70 per 2 meters and honestly with my experience with them i can not say its worth it, the app is pretty good so are the presents but for £70 you are missing out on alot of things like multiple colours per 2 meters you cant have a rainbow or something of similar effect, the strips often break quite easily which results in having to cut chunks out of the strip and the customer service is pretty shoddy for £70 per 2 meters i would expect alot more from this product
Are the light strips bright enough these days to use as normal light replacements instead of accent lighting? I have exposed rafters and thinking of using light steps by routing a channel within the rafters. Just not sure if they have a large radius of light emission eg room 4mx4m
I'd say it's close, but not always! Think of it in terms of lumens / meter or point lumens like I showed measurements for in this video. Most smart bulbs are 800 lumens so that's what you're trying to replace!
Great video. Can I ask you, do you think matter over wifi is more snappy than zigbee? Change scenes with zigbee bulbs in smartthings is kinda sluggish for me. It has that popcorn effect. Thanks.
Hey Tony, in general most wireless technologies have about the same speed and tend to have similar latencies. Zigbee can be snappy too but if you get a lot of devices on your network it can slow down. The other thing that might be happening to you is that some of them are local and some of them require an internet connection. You can try a few things like grouping zigbee bulbs into a lighting group or maybe trying to switch the bulb types or to switch to an edge driver on everything
@@AutomateYourLife Thanks for the reply. It looks like everything I have is cloud based. And I only have zigbee. I thought all zigbee could be used locally. I guess I was wrong. If I disconnect my modem (network still running) everything stops working. So the devices themselves needs to support local operation, even the hub, yes?
Can you please tell me what the "with" is from these strips? Around 1 cm or so? I honestly can't find it on the specifications page. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I planning to buy GU10 smart bulb white ambience for my new house. (probably Philips hue + bridge+ motion sensor) I also planning to get light strip. I only require warm to white light. So what do u recommend for smart white LED or COB strip ? Philips led strip only have RGB if I'm not wrong. I was thinking of getting hue because I can control everything using Philips app. I have a Tapo Door bell as well. So i'm confused whether should i go Full Tapo products. thanks
I did answer that in the video, but different ones are unfortunately brighter at different colors and with whites. So it all depends exactly what you're looking for. The answer's here for you...just watch for the charts and pause there
Not an easy thing to accomplish, but you'd need an addressable LED strip that allows you to turn on segments individually. We have a review on the Aqara T1 LED strip that could do this
i was trying to illuminate a flower fridge for my shop and bought Tapo L930-5 without much research.. and it was like there was no light at all xd.. Should i go for govee m1 ? i am mostly interested for bright whites (warm or cold depending on the content of the fridge) and some colored effect for when my shop is closed (because the fridge is visible from outside and i want it to look cool at night :P )
I talk about that in the middle of this video. We go through which strips are great for whites and then which combine effects. I think you might have to pick between bright whites OR colored effects though, depending on the size of your shop
I hope they get an Edge Driver too, but I think it's gonna be hard. It's all gotta be exposed the right way to ST so it's local and that takes some effort. Matter gives us hope for basic control though!
Which one is the best for making more natural light colors, especially warm white? The first time I tried a light strip I didn't like how it made a bluish white and an odd color of pink.
I really like the way that Hue does their warm White. It helps to have the diffuser because they often mix in those colours that you saw I do still like Govee but it is not a very bright warm White. The eve and nanoleaf light strips are really bright in all of the natural white colours and as long as you are going to be reflecting those off of walls or other surfaces then they will be excellent and you won't ever see the blues or pinks
need your help in choosing a light strip, as I am bamboozled by the number of choices. My situation is that I am extremely visually impaired, part of that impairment is me, in the kitchen anyway, needing the brightest, workspace white I can get. At first was going to go with this product recommended by a local lighting retailer it was called EFX, way more expensive even then Phillips. Wouldn’t mind if it were smart, but doesn’t need to be, just needs to be as bright as I can get it. Any help is greatly appreciated. looking to put this up as undercabinet lighting as well. 31:42

When appling light strips or anything with tape backing it is best to check the surface for bumps, and unlevel spots, sand it down if needed.
Next put on some rubber gloves, clean the surface with alcohol as you shown.
KEEP the gloves ON [because the oils from your skin will effects the stickness of the tape] as you did only pull a few inches of covering at a time.
Finally firmly press and hold each section for 5-15 seconds each, use mounting clip at bends, along long section, more it hanging in a downward position and for sure at the start, the end and at all connections.
This will make your install look better and last a lot longer.
If the lights you get didn't come with accessories, Amazon has a ton of them in kits. Check size and number of pins.
On some surfaces we added extra sticky with a spray or roll on glue accelerant. Check with 3M for an accelerant for glue tape.
Adding a metal track with clear plastic cover will protect the strips and they will last forever.

@@AutomateYourLife ofc, the software and support are the same for the other light strips by Hue, but bending and brightness, as well as Hue's advantage for Philips TV with Ambilight built-in, which ofc means the buyer have to decide based on the TV as well
I have an Ambilight TV, and I'm a Hue fan, with 3 light bulbs, a bridge and a dimmer switch, so for me, anything other than Hue isn't really worth it, but I was curious if this video had a light strip which I could use in my car, because I like to do fun things to my car 😅
@@lassebrustad not this vid, but check out Govee. They have some for cars :)
Amazing review helped me decide after watching right away
😃😃
Btw govee M1 can be set to diffrent brightneses on different segments
You're right! I believe it wasn't that way when I first did this video, but they've done that. TP Link has made some improvements too!
I wouldn't blame you for expecting more for the price. I just show the results!
any waterproof led strips?
Not that I know of, not smart ones anyway
Great video! Have you seen any products since the filming of this that you like more than the M1?
Nope! M1 is still the top as far as I'm concerned!
Good video Brian. Is there a way to modulate the lights from mattress actions? Ein Freund hat mir gefragt.
I bet your friend did ask that question. I mean...I could do it. Vib sensor + on/off vib = B.A. modulation.
Sir.
@@AutomateYourLife Thank you, Brian. I knew that you might have the answer.
@@tony1954 your ZigBee devices can all be local. Absolutely. So now you just need edge drivers for them all.
Then they will be local!
@@AutomateYourLife thank you for your time :)
Govee's customer service is second to none. It's all scamazon junk in the end, but having good CS makes it worth buying.
That's a great point. I've found Govee really good on the service side too.
Can you please tell me what the "with" is from these strips? Around 1 cm or so? I honestly can't find it on the specifications page. Thanks in advance!
Our sheet? It’s on there
I wonder if sync with the new govee m1 with other hue lights will produce pleasant eyesight or you can tell that they are different
No difference as far as I could tell
Could you do a FANCY LEDs comparison to these?
Don't know what that is!
Hi Brian. I need a lightstrip for my shower niche. What is the best one with IP 67 water resistance rating.
Hey so none of these have an IP67. What I'd suggest is that you get some channel with that kind of rating and use that as an install cover!
Do you need a separate controller for several strips in close location/
Some strips are extendable! Govee can be, and there are even strips that you can cut and connect in alternate ways
I have a question, can you actually use 4 meters of govee(2 strips of 2m) to light up a room as main light source?
I think you could, but it'll depend on the room and how bright you want it.
@@AutomateYourLife just a normal room, about 16-20 square meters, and about bright, just as a normal light bulb, for a little of office and daily usage
If I have two 5v6a 7 ft strips running off the same controller, what type of power supply should I use?
Match the voltage and make sure you have enough capacity for the amperage
All I want is a warm strip 2700K for the top of my cabinets. they won't be seen. Which one do you recommend?
That color of light, get anything in this list that meets the brightness you want.
really good video !
Thank you!
Does the Govee start to blink when powered on or automatic white or last color?
I don't see any blinking, pulsing, anything. They're good quality LEDs as far as I've seen.
Does the clear resin/rubber coating on some of these strips yellow badly over time to the point that white light does not look good?
I haven't seen that personally on any of these strips. I imagine it could happen depending on environment, but I haven't seen it yet.
What about LIFX light strip?
Can't do it all! 🤣
So i'm confused whether should i go Full Tapo products. thanks
Hue is RGBW, 100%. You're fine there.
We need a new one of this video :D
Name the strips!
1:55 is it better to bend led strips that way or nah bc that does actually seem to be better
Totally. But not all strips can do it
@@AutomateYourLife I see thanks
Dumb question if I’m looking for brightness and color and functionality which ones would be best
I did answer that in the video, but different ones are unfortunately brighter at different colors and with whites. So it all depends exactly what you're looking for. The answer's here for you...just watch for the charts and pause there
Any way to get the lights to light up 2 steps above and below the step you are on? So every step you are on 4 to 5 steps light up and "follow" you?
Not an easy thing to accomplish, but you'd need an addressable LED strip that allows you to turn on segments individually. We have a review on the Aqara T1 LED strip that could do this
th-cam.com/video/jqGrp_R8ZXo/w-d-xo.html
i was trying to illuminate a flower fridge for my shop and bought Tapo L930-5 without much research.. and it was like there was no light at all xd..
I wish govee would work with smarthings
I hope they get an Edge Driver too, but I think it's gonna be hard. It's all gotta be exposed the right way to ST so it's local and that takes some effort.
Matter gives us hope for basic control though!
Thanks Brian.
Thank you sir!
Very thorough!
Thanks sir! Big project here!
… that’s what she said!
Which one is the best for making more natural light colors, especially warm white? The first time I tried a light strip I didn't like how it made a bluish white and an odd color of pink.
I really like the way that Hue does their warm White. It helps to have the diffuser because they often mix in those colours that you saw
I do still like Govee but it is not a very bright warm White.
The eve and nanoleaf light strips are really bright in all of the natural white colours and as long as you are going to be reflecting those off of walls or other surfaces then they will be excellent and you won't ever see the blues or pinks
Your effort shows, ty!!!
Thanks!
need your help in choosing a light strip, as I am bamboozled by the number of choices. 31:42
With white, go with Eve or Nanoleaf from this comparison. You can see the lumens levels in our comparison sheet too, so download that!
@@AutomateYourLife thanks so much for the quick reply, greatly appreciate it
your upload truly got me hit it in a much more concise direction. Was kind of surprised you didn’t recommend to Phillips you, but I’ll take a second look at your recommendations, and again, thank you very much.
Which strip works with powerbank?
None really. You want the lowest power strip, so I think SwitchBot. But it still won't stay on for very long!
If you broke your strips at least you can cut and recouple the strip...
Most! Yep
i believe Hue are superior, but too expensive
This LED light belt is indeed very beautiful, I also have a very beautiful product, the price is very affordable, hope to communicate with you
Thanks for sharing
TOP
I gave a thumbs up for king fu hustle
Do you believe that every smart home device will be compatible with Matter in the future?
Nawwwww, but it'll be a high % in a couple years
None of these are Smart individually addressable.
Best is 3x LEDs
WTF? You didn't even include LIFX??? LIFX has the best light strips. All these others suck!
We'll include it in the next :)
@AutomateYourLife I really don't understand why LIFX gets ignored so much. Other than some minor connection issues on crappy home wifi systems, it is the best! It is also the brightest. Has the most color features too. LIFX has also dramatically dropped in price too. I use LIFX for all my home automation lights.
