Honestly my list would be Knob 12, Rare Breed, OF 1920, Eagle Rare and then a splurge bottle I’d hunt for number 5.

If you have KC12 in your top5 then I’ll probably have to check out the rest of your list. I’ve had ER it’s not bad but KC12 is my all time favorite. WT101 will probably always be in my top5. I almost bought a bottle of RareBreed but decided to try longbranch instead bc I was bringing it to share with the in-laws(lower proof). It was a win-win bc longbranch is legit.

@@1970Cuda440 Well, it's cheaper than Rare Breed (about $40 in my market), and always solid and always available. Nice proof point, and it was one of my "gateway" bourbons that pulled me over from being a scotch drinker (along with Eagle Rare and Blanton's, back when B;anton's was $50 and on every shelf (and, IMHO, better than it is now)).

For many years Elijah Craig 12yr old was my go to. When they took away the age statement and the quality suffered, Wild Turkey 101 became one of its replacements as a budget friendly Whiskey. These days, the Costco Kirkland brands are all really good budget friendly spirits.

I am an every day drinker. Spot on with the Rare Breed. One of my favorites. I tend to drink regularly out of my collection. Probably have 40 bottles opened that I drink from every day. My mixer is the handle of Ancient Age 10 star or OF 100 proof. My Friday night is EC barrel proof (currently C922) and OF 1920. My friends are very impressionable so they get the BT, ER or Ancient Age poured into an empty Blanton’s bottle. They are clueless. My special occasion is Weller 107 and Calumet 10 yr. Probably hardly a special occasion for most but that’s how I roll.

Newer bourbon drinker here (only been drinking it for about a year) and higher proof for my pallet blocks the flavors and has a tendency to have the dry erase marker taste that I can’t get past. My list for flavors and smoothness are Go-To Pour: Hirsch (this was introduced to me and very much reminds me of a poor mans Blantons - smooth, caramel and warm), Cheap Mixer: Makers Mark or Buffalo Trace (I can find either of these ANYWHERE and usually at sub $30/bottle), Friday Pour: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked (This was the first Bourbon I ever tried and hits my pallet perfectly!) Impress Guests: Michters Small Batch (Most of my guests have never tried bourbon neat or on the rocks and Michters is straight up apple pie in a bottle!), Special Occasion: Blantons (So Smooth, So Rich, it’s like a warm hug for your throat. Issue is I can’t find it ANYWHERE and it’s crazy expensive, plus you get the fun horse in stride for your collection!)

I can see Rare Breed as a go-to, also any regular Redwood Empire (but for bourbon it would be the Pipe Dream). For mixer maybe EW BiB. I'm all over ECBP for a Friday pour, but would never dilute with more than just a couple drops of water. If I want a 90 proof for mixing, I'd just grab EC small batch or Larceny. I'd use Blanton's to impress non-bourbon nerds; for real bourbon enthusiasts I'd go KC18. And agree that Stagg would be a great special occasion pour, or Jos. Magnus Cigar Blend.

    1. Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered
    2. Pikesville (yes, not a bourbon)
    3. Knob Creek 9 (affordable and great to drink or mix)
    4. Elijah Craig BP - this is usually not hard to find
    5. Ezra Brooks 7 - not always so eazy to find but more common than not, I love this one.
**Honorable mention that I just found is the Traverse City Straight Wheat Barrel Proof. This satisfies my Weller OWA cravings. I just found this the other day and if it's a regularly stocked item, it will bump out something on my list.

If you’re a fan of ‘Natural Wine’ or have never heard of it before. There’s a growing movement of higher skin contact wine and wine blends from local independent vineyards/wineries. If you have some places or shops in your area outside your grocery store, I can’t recommend enough bottles from Las Jaras, Scotty Boy, Stolpman Vinyards, Duckman, and Big Table Farm. I’ve been able to find some at Whole Foods wine department that range from 25-45 a bottle

I'm not sure there are many wives that would be that understanding. Of course, you are running a bourbon channel so maybe that is the reason. Thanks a lot for the channel.

Josh here. We’ve each got our own “fun money” budget monthly and as long as we stay within that-or save it up for bigger splurges-whatever we spend it on is fair game without critique from the other partner. Helps a lot when whiskey splurges come up for me or yarn splurges come up for Erin.

Let's get real. ANYONE spending 150$ on one bottle of anything is completely UNrealistic (for us normal income folks). Five NORMAL bourbons everyone should have. 1) Mixer-Jim Beam handle 2) Everyday-OF-100 proof 3) Friday pour-Woodford reserve 4) to Impress-Rare Breed 5) Special occasion-Bookers (yes, in some markets it's still only 75$!) And 75$ is pushing it on the amount normal folk would spend on ONE bottle!!!

Rare Breed was our “Go To Pour” when we started drinking bourbon about 15 years ago. We were out of town & tried to buy a bottle of Rare Breed? They suggested Noah’s Mill. We fell in love with it & Noah’s is our go to bourbon now. We rarely have a Rare Breed now.
Our special occasion bourbon is Michter’s 10 year. That is about as expensive we are willing to go. At $140 a bottle it’s well worth. Very hard to source. We drink that over a few cubes. I bought 3 bottles at once 8 years ago & still enjoy one bottle at a time.
Great review! I’ll try to find those other bottles you suggested?

I like the Heaven Hill profile and used to actively search for the EC and Larceny thrice yearly releases (B523, etc). But over the years I found them to be uneven in quality, so I stopped automatically longing for them in advance. At the same time I have also kind of gotten over the specialness of different bourbons and just like what tastes good. There's a group for me that includes most of the offerings of: Wild Turkey, Old Forester, Heaven Hill, Widow Jane and other pours I stumble onto in tastings. Since I rarely spend more than $80 on a bottle, like never actually, I just share with my friends whatever I have around. It's all great stuff and flavorful. It's about the friendship with me, as I know is with Josh and Erin. Hey, separate side topic: Matt at ADHD Whiskey is a super great guy with unique intonation and a bodacious humor. If I had a small dinner party on my yacht (if I had a yacht), I would invite you two and Matt and it would be a heck of an evening.

Go to: Blade and Bow. That nose...
Cheap mixer: Changes, but Rebel 100 usually, or whatever. I'm not drinking it.
Friday pour: Four Roses small batch select. Easily my favorite bourbon. Price, availability, and flavor, all there.
Impress guests: Right now, I was fortunate enough to get a Blue Note 17. Fantastic.
Special occasion: I have a Makers wood finished that my wife and I hand-dipped together at the distillery.
Might be a lone voice here by Wild Turkey is meh to my pallet and I could not tell you a worse bourbon for the price than Elijah Craig. Any of it. I keep trying it but me and EJ aren't friends. Just my taste.

The other day, a friend who isn’t super into bourbon but who has some very generous friends and family, pulled out a Calumet 15, a Fiddler, and the Four Gates Kelvin Bourrye. I have a Calumet 15 that I don’t remember hitting as well as this one did. That pour was dynamite. I’ve only had a couple bar pours of Stagg Jr. but this really reminded me of Stagg. The Four Gate landed easily in second, as it should, but the Calumet was noticeably better.

Heh. I like standard easy to find stuff, for the most part, and I can daily, Friday, or mix all of them. Woodford Reserve. Woodford Reserve Double Oak (wonderful base for a manhattan or old fashion, or also neat). Elijah Craig small batch (yeah the regular stuff). 1792. Makers Mark 101. Wild Turkey 101. Ok, that was 6. Any five of those.

    1. Stellum (Lyra Leo, or whatever name next) in the $59 for everyday first sip. 2. Sam Grant (Safeway store brand) or Evan Williams for mixer. 3. My impress bottle is William Heavenhill at 137 proof, but, it’s impossible to get. 4. The Friday night pour would be something, almost anything from Barrell. 5. Special Occasion Eagle Rare 17yr. Saving that for the day a certain former reality TV star enters prison. ;). I’m really looking forward to trying some of your suggestions since they are available at my local Total Wine, including Rare Breed and Calumet. I’ve had the Elijah Craig and it’s OK, but not a favorite at the price point.

it is cool to have crazy expensive bourbon that cost over $90 for 750ML, but I have found, that many that cost less than $50 taste better. I really like Eagle Rare bought at the distillery for $40ish, wife and I, so, we get two bottles, (Buffalo Trace almost as good). My normal 5 bottles: Knob Creek 9, Makers Mark, Larceny normal proof, E Craig normal proof, Buffalo Trace, and next would be 1792, Heaven Hill Bottled in bond, Russell Rev Single Barrel, Weller Special Res. at normal price (>$30).

Of the bottles I own, I'd always have as a regular sipper an Eagle Rare store picks (easy to get in London now and even tastier than the normal one), mixer would be Makers Mark (don't have your array of cheap pours in the UK and it's one of the cheapest over here at around £25), Friday night pour is OF 1920, Impress the Guests bottle is a Kings County pick by a friend that is high in proof but doesn't feel like the proof other than it's so full of flavour and my Special Occasion bottle is GTS 2020 bottle (which will have to be replaced in the not so distant future, sadness).
