I played on this turf... best rugby day of my life. Walking on there thinking of all the legends who had played on there, spine chilling.

No fake, pumped up torsos crammed into tight fitting vests, no water bottles running on to the pitch every five minutes, no predictable grunting one dimensional forwards killing the game, just pure Rugby played with natural flare and passion, the modern game has been ruined beyond recognition.

Cant agree with you more. And I still referee, and every year there are law changes that make the game even worse. Goal line drop outs? Ridiculous! If anything, a team that can keep a try from being scored from multiple pick and go phases should get a 22 drop out as a reward!

Yes, it used to be a player’s game, but since it went professional in ‘95, everything is geared toward the spectator and the ‘bums on seats’ - I grew up in a rugby household and played through both eras - the stop/start nature and the law changes have absolutely wrecked the game - it has become boring in my view ( and I loved rugby with a passion.) So sad, but... the ‘love of money’.

Yes, but that might take a breakaway league or something like that. My reply above about baseball being played by some in the US with equipment, clothing, rules of the game as played in the 1880s and 1890s worth noting. I'd love to see rugby played under laws of the 1970s, cotton shorts and shirts, leather ball.

Then Rupert Murdoch got the rugby head honchos to start turning the game into something like rugby league, starting in 1993. It's only gotten even worse. Goal line drop out? Are you kidding me? I referee. The other weekend I had to think whether to award a 22 or goal line drop out. A 22 happened to be the right decision.

To those replying below: yes, I think the game was much better in my old playing days, 70s, 80s. I have an idea based on the fact that in America some baseball is played with equipment/uniforms of the 1880s and 1890s, balls, bats, gloves. Rules are from that time too. I think rugby needs something similar: a separate game of 70s rugby, and World Rugby would object, but F them!

That's right. Makes sense. Perfect sense in fact. You'll not see heavy-weight boxers in the 70s and 80s built like today's rugby players. Money or not. Folk keep selling out.
