  • Today I’ll show you a surprising way to make your own collage papers using any type of acrylic paint and paper you probably already have. It’s Part 2 of the series on how to create beautiful collage papers without any special skills, techniques or supplies.
    I’ll show you exactly how I paint my collage papers, including what kind of paint gets the best result. I’ll also show you how my handmade collage paper looks inside of my own visual journals, and how your new collage papers can inspire other creative projects.
    Making simple collage papers to use in your art journal, visual journal, collages and in your paintings is so satisfying.
    I’m inspired by the Matisse cut paper collages - which he created by painting on paper. If you haven’t yet tried to paint with collage paper, I hope you’ll take away some ideas to get started.
    While it’s fun to collect scrapbooking and decorative paper to use for mixed media collage backgrounds, you can easily make your own scrapbook paper, in whatever color palette or design you like best. This collage paper tutorial is perfect for your DIY paper collage paintings, art journaling, or to add to your sketchbook.

    So many good ideas in this video. Using a sketchbook for leftovers of your materials and tear the pages out so you don't have all those loose papers around is something I take away from this video. And I love how you used the magazine image and the collage piece in your journal. I love all the video's you've shared lately, thank you Lisa! You're the one who always help me to get back to my journal when once again I've forgotten what it's really about.

    Awesome! SO many ideas to try. I saw a wild abstract garden in the papers you showed at the end....more ideas. Thanks LIsa!

      I'm glad you found so many ideas to try, Maxine - especially since you've experience so many (all?!) of my online courses! It's so fun how abstracts end up meaning so many different things... keep me posted if you try this!

    I love seeing what you do with the collage papers you made in the first video. Thank you for sharing your process, it’s fascinating. It especially blew my mind that you use a credit card to paint on your canvas breaking all the “rules” I thought I knew about how to make art.

      Thanks so much, Angie! Who made up those art rules, anyway!? I paint with brushes, too - but love to use these paint scrapers on my paint palettes.

    So glad I saw your video. I was just about to toss all my scratch papers out. Now my old paints have the new job of making beautiful collage paper. Mahalo 🎉

    Thanks so much for sharing, Lisa. Only seeing these videos now. I’ve also done a lot of painting backgrounds on scrap pieces of paper. It is such a surprize when you start cutting it up for tags, hearts and other embelishments to use in your junk journals😀 Something else that I recently started doing, is painting over old dress pattern paper and the using it in collages, painting it onto collages with matt medium. Surprizing results too. Thanks for all your tips and tricks🤗 Happy painting❤️

      Hi Dorothy and welcome! Yes, cutting up the painted papers is where there is so much magic. I also LOVE dress pattern paper - and their envelopes, as my gram and aunties are all talented seamstresses and I feel close to them when I use these in my artwork. I did not learn to sew - but it's still on my list!

    You have inspired me to not use styrofoam meat trays as a palette! Thanks so much for the inspo!

    I had done the same things that you did with the painted papers. When I used the papers, they would stick together. What can be done so the papers won’t stick together?

    • @LisaSonora
      @LisaSonora  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If any medium is used in the paint, that can cause the papers to stick together. Plain acrylic dried well shouldn't stick.

    Do you teach in person workshops?

    • @LisaSonora
      @LisaSonora  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Susan - yes - I've taught in person long before I started teaching online in 2009. You can find current workshops on my website: www.visualjournalstudio.com/
      and if you join my mailing list there, you'll get my emails when I'm teaching in person - those workshops fill up fast, so if they are already full, I don't post them on my website. Where would you like to take a workshop?
